My Husband Chose Her Over Me

Chapter 59 – Ashes Between Us

Ch. 59 / 213 Mar 25, 2026

The night after the council quarrel, silence pressed between them, sharp and cold.

Elara lay on her back, eyes fixed on the canopy above. The carved beams were lost in shadow. The hearth’s last embers crackled softly. Wind rattled the shutters. Caden’s breathing was slow, deliberate, each inhale and exhale marking the space between them.

But the silence pressed down harder than any of it.

His scarred arm, still faintly luminous, rested on the sheets. It marked a line neither of them crossed. Light moved beneath his skin in thin, shifting lines. Unnatural. Mesmerizing. A reminder of the Hollow Veil’s hold. She hated it. She wanted to touch it. She wanted him.

She wanted to reach for him. Not as queen. Not as ruler. Not as the woman who defended a kingdom. Just as Elara. Just as the girl who loved him under starlight, before the prophecies, before the crown, before every kiss carried the taste of doom.

Her throat tightened. Mistrust caught there, sharp as thorns. Did he feel it too? Did his heart still beat her name, or theirs?

She couldn’t stand the distance anymore. She moved closer and pressed her palm to his chest. His heart hammered beneath her hand. Not steady, not like before. Wild, frantic, like something trapped and desperate to escape.

“Tell me what it feels like,” she whispered, her voice trembling against the stillness.

He didn’t look at her. His gaze fixed on the ceiling, jaw tight. “Like I’m burning from the inside out.” His voice was raw, torn. “Like every beat of my heart belongs to them now, not me.”

Her hand tightened, as if she could keep the words from escaping, as if she could make them untrue. "Then I’ll remind you who you belong to."

She pressed her lips to his collarbone. Her breath caught, afraid he might disappear if she let it go.

“Elara…” His voice caught on her name, half-plea, half-warning.

“No,” she cut him off, her tone sharp, desperate. “Don’t tell me to stop. Don’t tell me to wait for some better moment that will never come. We have this moment. That’s all prophecy hasn’t stolen yet.”

His resistance broke. He turned and caught her mouth with his. The kiss started gently, searching, as if they were learning each other all over again. It turned frantic, desperate. Their bodies pressed together, hungry, as if closeness could burn the prophecy away.

She tangled her fingers in his hair, pulling him closer. His hands moved over her, memorizing every line. Passion built, reckless and raw. Every touch was a plea, a promise. Grief and fire in every movement.

When they finally collapsed, tangled in the sheets, silence returned. It wasn’t empty now. It was heavy with what they’d shared - defiance and goodbye, both at once.

Elara traced the glowing veins on his arm. The light pulsed under her fingers, a strange and intimate sensation. She wanted to believe her touch could change what fate had written. She wanted to believe it more than anything.

But when she closed her eyes, she didn’t see just him. She saw the tether. She saw the Hollow Veil’s claim running through him, poison dressed as something sacred.

“Elara,” he murmured, half-asleep, half-broken.

She turned to him, pressing her forehead against his shoulder. “You’re mine,” she whispered fiercely. “I don’t care what they’ve taken. You’re mine.”

His arm curled around her, the scarred one, the glowing one. For once, he didn’t flinch from it, didn’t try to hide it. “And if prophecy says otherwise?” he asked, voice rough, haunted.

Her reply was soft, nearly lost to the crackle of the last ember: “Then prophecy will have to break against us.”

He laughed, bitter and hollow, no mirth in it. “You sound like me, once. Do you know what terrifies me? That I’m already breaking. That when the time comes, I’ll be their weapon instead of your shield.”

Her eyes stung. She pulled back enough to see his face - ashen, weary, carved with shadows. “You are not theirs,” she insisted. “You never will be.”

“How can you be so sure?” His gaze burned with a desperate hunger, as if he needed her certainty more than air.

“Because I love you.”

The words settled between them. Heavy. Simple. Unshakable.

His breath caught. For a moment, something unguarded flickered in his eyes. Hope, thin as glass. It vanished. Shadows took their place.

“Love doesn’t always win, Elara.”

Her jaw clenched. “No. But it fights. And I’ll fight until my last breath.”

He reached up, brushing her cheek with trembling fingers. “What if your last breath comes because of me?”

She turned into his touch, pressing her lips against his palm. “Then it will still be yours. Always yours.”

He closed his eyes. Pain twisted his face. Silence fell again, thick and close.

The fire shrank to embers. The room felt colder.

“Elara.” His voice was so soft she almost missed it.

“Yes?”

“If I ask you something, will you promise me the truth?”

She hesitated, then nodded.

He swallowed hard. “If the prophecy cannot be broken - if the Hollow Veil claims me completely - will you be the one to end it? Will you be the one to stop me?”

Her breath caught in her throat. The words cut deeper than any blade. “Don’t ask me that.”

“I have to.” His eyes opened, locking with hers, fierce and pleading. “I need to know you’ll protect our people from me. I need to know you’ll protect yourself.”

Her hands shook as they clutched the sheets. “Caden - ”

“Promise me.” His tone sharpened, edging with desperation and command. “Swear it, Elara.”

Her lips trembled. “I can’t.”

“You must.”

Tears welled, burning hot. “Don’t you understand? To kill you would be to kill myself. There is no world where I survive you.”

“Then we are already doomed,” he whispered.

The words broke something in her. Tears spilled, silent at first, then wracking. She buried her face against his chest, sobbing against the heartbeat that felt less and less his own.

His arms wrapped around her tightly, as though holding her together even as he unraveled. “I’m sorry,” he whispered into her hair. “I’m sorry for everything I can’t promise you.”

She clutched him tighter. “Don’t apologize. Just stay. Just stay with me tonight.”

They lay together, clinging to each other in a bed that felt too big, in a room heavy with prophecy. Their love burned in the dark, fierce and brief, a small rebellion against what waited outside.

Even as Elara drifted into uneasy half-sleep, her hand tangled in his glowing arm, her mind circled the words of prophecy.

Even love cannot silence what is foretold.

Her body eased, but her heart stayed at war.
