My Husband Chose Her Over Me

Chapter 63 – Fire Over Korrin

Ch. 63 / 213 Mar 25, 2026

Smoke pressed low over Korrin, thick and suffocating, winding between the spires and towers. The city’s bells rang out, sharp and uneven, barely cutting through the roar of fire. Shadows darted along the streets - masked acolytes, their chanting threading through the chaos, half prayer, half threat.

Elara rode at the front, her cloak snapping behind her. Each hoofbeat struck sparks from the stone. She drew in the smoke-laced air, steadying herself for what waited ahead. Caden rode close, his sword catching the firelight, the veins in his hand pulsing with a faint, unnatural glow.

“Hold steady!” Elara shouted over the chaos, the wind carrying her voice like steel. “We reach the square, we cut the heart out of their ranks, and we protect the people!”

Caden caught her gaze, eyes bright and unyielding. For a heartbeat, nothing else existed. Then the Veil acolytes broke from a burning alley, arms up, fire flickering in their hands.

“Now!” Caden roared, charging alongside her.

Smoke and steel filled the street. Elara swung down from her horse, her blade meeting an acolyte’s dagger with a sharp ring. Sparks scattered. She turned, blocking one attack, then another, and caught a child as a wall crumbled, pulling her close and covering her with her own body.

“Your Majesty!” a guard called, struggling to hold the line. Elara shook her head. “This is my city. I won’t hide while my people bleed.”

Caden’s sword was everywhere at once, arcs of silver light cutting through fire and smoke. “Stay behind me!” he shouted, voice swallowed by the inferno, yet there was no hesitation in his movements.

“No,” Elara answered sharply, spinning around to meet a masked acolyte with a blade raised high. “We fight together!”

They fought back to back, sword meeting fire, shield catching the weight of each blow. Every movement was a promise, every block a refusal to give in.

Caden’s scar burned red, casting a harsh light across the stones. The Veil acolytes pulled back, their chanting rising, desperate. He gritted his teeth and slammed his sword into the ground, holding himself steady.

“Caden!” Elara called over the roar. “Don’t let them touch your mind!”

His eyes met hers, burning with resolve. “I am tethered to you, Elara! They will never claim me!”

The fight pressed in from all sides. Acolytes poured from the alleys, their voices raw, fire spreading behind them. Elara ducked a blade, heat searing her arm as she struck back, her sword cutting through flesh. She broke away long enough to pull a family from the fire, her heart pounding for those she couldn’t reach.

Caden fought through the smoke, his sword cutting down anything in his path. A masked acolyte rushed him, chanting, but when Caden’s scar lit up, the words broke off. The acolyte hesitated, fear plain in his eyes.

“You will not have him!” Elara screamed, cutting down another acolyte who dared approach.

They moved together, his sword cutting forward, hers following, each step matched by the other. Instinct and desperation kept them close, the bond between them stronger than anything the Veil could offer.

Caden stumbled, fire crawling across the stones. Elara caught his arm, steadying him. “I’ve got you!” she said, pulling him away from the falling wall.

He looked at her, soot streaked across his face, sweat mingling with ash. “Always,” he whispered, voice raw. “Always… tethered to you.”

Metal clashed and fire surged around them. More acolytes pushed in from the square, relentless. Caden’s strength and Elara’s blade held them back, their resolve unbroken.

Elara scanned the chaos, searching for anyone trapped. She grabbed a young man, pulling him away from a falling beam. “Go! Find your family!” she shouted. He nodded, fear plain on his face, and ran.

Caden struck down a chanting acolyte who had lunged at her from behind. “I will not let you die!” he growled, sword sweeping in a silver arc.

“I am not yours to protect, Caden!” she shot back, dodging a swing of his opponent’s blade. “We protect each other!”

Time dragged, thick with fire, shadow, and screams. Each swing, each breath, felt heavy. Prophecy lingered at the edge, but they fought on, refusing to let fate decide for them.

The last acolyte dropped. The chanting stopped. Only the fire crackled and the buildings groaned. Survivors crept out from the rubble, faces smeared with ash, eyes wide.

“Our queen,” a voice whispered. “Our blood-queen.”

Elara’s breath came hard, her sword sticky with sweat and ash. She found Caden at once. He was breathing heavily, his scar still glowing, but his eyes stayed on her.

She dropped to her knees next to him, hands on his shoulders. “Caden,” she said, her voice unsteady. “Are you hurt?”

He shook his head, wiping soot from his face. “I’m here,” he said quietly. “Always. No matter what the prophecy says, I’m yours.”

Elara touched the faint light in his veins, grounding herself in the feel of him. “Whatever the world wants, whatever the Veil says, you’re mine. I’m yours. Tonight, we chose each other.”

He squeezed her hand, rough and steady. “We fight together. For Korrin. For Verdana. For us.”

The city went quiet. Smoke drifted up, marking the sky. People stepped out from broken homes and alleys, nodding, whispering thanks. They looked at Elara and Caden - not just as rulers, but as the ones who stood and fought.

Elara rose to her feet, lifting her sword to the skies. “Korrin stands!” she cried, voice ringing over the ashes. “We are not broken. We will not kneel! Not to gods, not to shadows, not to prophecy!”

Caden mirrored her stance, sword raised beside hers, crimson light streaking across his skin. “For the people!” he roared. “For Verdana!”

The fire snapped and hissed, but for once, it didn’t feel like an ending. It felt like something new, burning away fear and leaving only what mattered between them.

Later, outside the city, they sat by a small fire. Blood dried on their armor, smoke still clinging to their skin. Caden looked tired, soot streaking his face, but his eyes stayed soft when he looked at her.

Elara let herself breathe, leaning against him, feeling the warmth of his chest beneath her hand. “Whatever the prophecy says,” she murmured, “my heart is already yours.”

He pressed a kiss to her temple, soft but certain. “And mine yours. Always.”

The fire crackled. The city smoldered behind them. In that small circle of warmth, they chose each other - over fear, over fate, over everything. For once, prophecy felt far away, nothing but a faint echo against what they’d built together.
