My Husband Chose Her Over Me

Chapter 85 – The Final Battle

Ch. 85 / 213 Mar 25, 2026

Chaos broke over the cavern, sudden and absolute, as if a dam had given way. Twenty warriors stood against a tide of fanatics. The numbers should have spelled their end, but numbers never measured the kind of fury that burned in their eyes.

"CADEN!" Elara's voice cut through the maelstrom like a blade through silk, and at the altar, those beloved eyes found hers across the crimson-lit battlefield.

"Elara!" His voice cracked as he pulled against the chains, the sound rough and unsteady. Blood streaked his wrists where the shackles bit into his skin, but he kept fighting, reaching for her even though she was far beyond his grasp.

The cultists pressed in, a swarm of bodies and raised blades, their weapons catching the red light that spilled from the crystal veins overhead. Elara moved among them, her sword flashing, each swing clearing a narrow path through the crush.

"Kill them all!" shrieked a masked fanatic as he lunged at Captain Aldric. "Let none defile this sacred - "

His words ended in a gurgle as Aldric's blade found his throat. "Sacred?" the captain spat. "This is an abattoir, not a temple!"

Around the cavern's edges, Brother Marcus's voice rose in holy song, his words weaving through the clash of steel: "She comes in fire and glory, her blade the instrument of justice! Let the false gods tremble, for the true light has arrived!"

Arinelle's scream cut through the noise, sharp and raw. She stood at the head of the altar, the obsidian dagger lifted in her hand, black robes shifting around her legs.

"You dare?" she shrieked, her eyes blazing with fanatical fury as she spotted Elara cutting her way through the press of bodies. "You dare bring steel into this sacred space?"

Elara's laugh was terrible to hear as she beheaded a cultist with a backhand stroke. "Sacred? I see nothing sacred here - only a madwoman about to murder her own son!"

"He is not my son anymore!" Arinelle's voice cracked like breaking glass. "He is the key to our ascension, the blood that will wake sleeping gods! His sacrifice will birth a new age!"

"His sacrifice?" Elara fought like a woman possessed, each strike carrying the weight of absolute conviction. A cultist's blade scraped across her armor, another's mace whistled past her head, but still she pressed forward, step by bloody step. "You would spill your own child's blood to crown yourself a false queen?"

"False?" Arinelle's face contorted with rage as she began moving around the altar, keeping it between herself and Elara's approach. "I have bled for this cause, suffered for it, given everything I had! What have you given but pretty words and hollow promises?"

Elara vaulted over a body, her blade catching another cultist at the shoulder. She was close enough now to see the wildness in Arinelle's eyes, close enough to hear Caden's uneven breaths.

"What have I given?" Elara's voice carried a quality that made even the battling warriors pause. "I have given my heart, my soul, my every waking moment to the protection of those I love. You would sacrifice him to sate your own hunger. You are no mother - you are only a void wearing a woman's face!"

Arinelle flinched at the words. The dagger trembled in her hand, and for a heartbeat, something softer crossed her face.

"I... I loved him," she whispered, so quietly only Caden and Elara could hear. "I held him as a babe, sang him to sleep, kissed away his tears..."

"Then remember that love!" Elara stepped closer, her voice steady. The battle noise faded at the edge of her awareness, leaving only the three of them and the space between. "Remember the mother you once were. It's not too late to - "

"It is too late!" The humanity vanished from Arinelle's face like a candle being snuffed. "It was too late the moment they took everything from me! My husband, my lands, my dignity - all stolen by nobles who thought themselves better than the blood that made them!"

She raised the dagger again, its obsidian edge seeming to drink the crimson light. "If I cannot have what was taken, then let the whole world burn! Let the gods rise and judge us all!"

Elara lunged, but Arinelle met her at the altar. Their hands locked around the dagger, each straining for control. For a moment, nothing else mattered but the blade between them and what it meant.

"He chose you," Arinelle snarled as they wrestled, her breath hot against Elara's face. "My own son chose his pretty little queen over the woman who gave him life! Do you know what that feels like?"

"I know what it feels like to truly love someone!" Elara gasped, her muscles straining as the dagger's point wavered dangerously close to Caden's chest. "Love means wanting what's best for them, not what serves your own pain!"

The dagger shook between their hands, neither able to force it away. Around them, the fight pressed on. Willem's spear found its mark, Garrett's sword clashed with a mace, and Brother Marcus's voice carried above it all, steady even as he fought.

Another voice cut through the noise, cold and close.

"Enough."

Both women turned to see Kaela standing at the altar's foot, the crimson crown clutched in her white-knuckled hands. Her amber eyes glittered with a hunger that made even the battling cultists pause.

"You bicker like children over a toy," she continued, her voice carrying clearly despite the din. "Arinelle, you claim the right of blood. Elara, you claim the right of love. But neither of you sees the truth."

She stepped closer, and the crown in her hands pulsed with malevolent life. "Power takes what it wants. It doesn't ask permission, doesn't wait for blessing, doesn't beg for approval. It simply... takes."

"Kaela, don't - " Caden began, but she silenced him with a look.

"Don't what? Don't claim what was always meant to be mine? I've been patient, careful, playing the perfect advisor while you two tear each other apart. But patience has its limits."

The crown's glow brightened, and with each pulse, the cavern seemed to lose a little more of its light.

"I betrayed my family for this moment," Kaela continued, her voice taking on an otherworldly quality. "I sold my soul, piece by piece, gathering the secrets that led us here. While you, Arinelle, played at being a prophet, and you, Elara, played at being a queen, I did what was necessary."

She raised the crown toward her head, and the air around her began to shimmer with dark energy. "The gods don't care about your pain, Arinelle. They don't care about your love, Elara. They care about will - the will to seize power and wield it without mercy."

"The crown," Brother Marcus gasped from across the chamber, his face pale with recognition. "It's not just a symbol - it's a conduit! She means to - "

"To become what they only pretended to be," Kaela finished. "A true vessel for the hollow gods, a queen not of mortals but of shadows."

But as she lifted the crown, Elara moved. She wrenched the dagger from Arinelle's hand, and Arinelle stumbled back, off balance. Eyes as she raised the blade. "I won't let you - "

That was when Kaela moved with the fluid grace of a striking serpent. In one motion, she dropped the crown and lunged forward, her hands closing around the dagger's hilt even as it remained in Elara's grip.

"If neither of you will claim the crown," she shrieked, her composure finally shattering into naked ambition, "then I'll take it over his corpse! The gods will have their blood sacrifice, and I will have their power!"

She wrenched the dagger from Elara's startled grip, the obsidian blade gleaming like captured night. The crown lay forgotten at her feet, its crimson light pulsing in rhythm with her racing heart.

"Kaela, no!" Caden's voice was raw with desperation. "This isn't you! This isn't what you wanted!"

"Isn't it?" Her smile was terrible to behold as she raised the dagger high above his chest. "I've wanted power my entire life, Caden. Real power, not the hollow authority doled out by kings and queens. This is my chance to take it!"

The dagger started its fall, the black blade aimed for Caden's chest. For a moment, the fighting slowed, every eye drawn to the altar and what was about to happen.

"CADEN!" Elara screamed, diving forward, but she was too far away, moving too slowly, reaching across an impossible distance as the blade fell like a piece of the night sky made solid.

Time slowed, each heartbeat dragging out. The dagger fell. Elara reached for Caden, who strained against his chains. Somewhere above, the darkness seemed to shift, heavy with the promise of something waking.

At the altar's edge, Arinelle watched with eyes that held neither love nor madness, only a terrible, empty hunger. The crown pulsed at Kaela's feet, its light reflecting off the falling blade, and in that crimson glow, the future of the kingdom hung suspended like a sword of judgment over all their heads.

The obsidian dagger fell, and the world held its breath.
