My Husband Chose Her Over Me

Chapter 79 – A Queen’s Declaration

Ch. 79 / 213 Mar 25, 2026

The great marble council chamber thrummed with tension. Tapers guttered, their smoke spiraling like accusing fingers toward the vaulted ceiling. Nobles shifted restlessly, voices tangling - fear sparring with ambition, ambition shrouded in piety.

Ferren’s voice sliced through the din, slick and assured as oil.

“Majesty,” he said, bowing low. “Verdana trembles. Treachery seeps from every border. End this unrest. Cast him aside - proclaim Caden fallen. Only a queen untouched by betrayal may lead us. Do this, and Verdana will rally to you.”

Murmurs of assent rippled. Some nodded eagerly, others with reluctance, but all eyes turned to Elara.

She rose - slow, deliberate. Her crimson gown spilled down the dais like fire devouring stone. She said nothing, letting silence stretch until even the boldest nobles fidgeted under her gaze.

When she did speak, her voice struck the chamber like steel on steel.

“No.”

The single word rang, silencing even the priests’ whispers.

Ferren blinked, then forced a laugh. “Majesty, perhaps you misheard - ”

“I heard you,” Elara said. “And Verdana will hear me. You ask me to cast aside the man who endured chains, fire, exile - yet returned not for crown, but for love, for loyalty, for this kingdom.”

Her gaze swept the benches, daring any to look away. "I don't discard loyalty for convenience. I don't yield to fear. If I must stand alone, so be it. Verdana deserves rulers who love as fiercely as they fight."

The chamber shuddered with voices - confusion, disbelief, awe. Ferren stepped forward, his face reddening. "Love does not feed armies! Affection cannot bind a kingdom! A ruler must be feared, Majesty. Fear keeps obedience. Loyalty born of love is fragile."

"Fragile?" Elara’s tone sliced sharper than any blade. "You have never known true loyalty. Fear shatters at the first sign of weakness. Love endures even chains."

A priest rose, robes rustling. “Majesty, your words are perilous. Tying yourself to one man risks all if he falters again.”

Elara’s eyes softened, but her voice stayed unyielding. "He faltered. So did I. So did many among you, who sold your honor in hushed bargains as war loomed. But faltering is not the end. Rising - choosing again - that is where strength lies."

Another noble, sharp-faced Lady Maeren, stood.

“And what of Verdana’s safety? Will you risk every soul for your personal vow?”

Elara’s voice deepened, carrying across the hall.

“You speak as though love is a weakness. But Verdana’s strength is not ruled by fear - our power comes from every promise, every shared hardship, every bond. Love is not indulgence; it is what disciplines us, moves us to sacrifice, and urges us to stand together. Love is what makes us more than subjects; it makes us guardians of each other.”

Gasps. Some nobles leaned forward, unable to turn away. Others scowled, wounded pride twisting their faces.

Ferren sneered. "Fine words. But words cannot defend borders or shatter enemy spears. This kingdom needs iron, not sentiment."

Elara’s gaze fixed on him.

"Hear me now." She stepped forward, voice swelling, her words resounding with prophetic weight.

“I do not want to be a tyrant. That is not my purpose. I do not want to rule by crushing others beneath my heel, nor to command obedience through terror. I would rather lift people than grind them down.

We were not born to despise one another, nor to bow like slaves to the bitterness of fear. There is room in Verdana for all - farmer and noble, warrior and child. The Earth is rich; it can provide for all if we care for it together.

But greed has poisoned men’s souls. It has barricaded this council with suspicion and driven us to treat loyalty as a currency to be spent, not a bond to be honored. Fear has enslaved us - made us obedient servants to despair.

We have grown clever, but cold. Cynical, but unkind. We dwell too much on power, feel too little mercy. Verdana needs kindness more than cleverness, courage of heart more than brute strength. Without these, our swords carve only graves."

The chamber was still. Even Ferren’s mouth had fallen shut.

Elara pressed on, her voice ringing with conviction.

"We are not slaves to fear. Not cattle to be herded into war. We are people. We are Verdana. We carry loyalty in our hearts. No decree can strip it from us."

Only those who lack love cling to hatred - only the faithless try to rule by fear. Verdana’s true strength lies not in crown, council, or swords, but in its people: in your compassion, your integrity, your courage. Together, you can create a kingdom where loyalty is lived and peace is possible.

She turned then, her eyes falling squarely on Ferren.

“You ask me to cast aside loyalty, to discard love. But if Verdana no longer needs loyalty, perhaps Verdana has no use for you.”

Ferren’s lips trembled, words caught in his throat. Around him, nobles shifted - some glaring at him, others lowering their heads in shame.

Elara raised her voice one final time.

"To those who fear, I say: do not despair. The misery upon us is passing. Fearful men will fade. Their power will fade with them. Verdana’s heart is stronger than greed, stronger than treachery. And so long as we live, so long as love endures, loyalty will never perish."

For a long, breathless moment, silence hung. Then, one by one, nobles rose from their seats - not in duty, but in awe. They bowed, not to her crown, but to her conviction.

The priests whispered, their words trembling with wonder.

“She has fulfilled the prophecy… steadfast where others waver…”

Elara stood taller, her crimson gown trailing flame as she descended the dais. Each step echoed a vow through marble and bone.

And for the first time, Verdana’s nobles did not kneel from fear, but from devotion.
