Midnight pressed in, the palace holding its breath. Moonlight slipped across the stone floor, pale and cold. The hush was shattered with Caden’s cry.
He jerked upright, hand clamped over his arm. The scar there burned, hot and bright, a line of fire under his skin.
“Caden - ” Elara’s voice cut through the dark as she reached for him, her queenly composure discarded in the face of his pain.
“Don’t,” he gasped, pulling away, his breath ragged. “It’s nothing. Just an old wound.”
But it wasn’t nothing. The glow crawled up his arm, spilling across his chest. His veins burned, bright as fire, shapes she couldn’t name. He convulsed, back arched, fists tangled in the sheets.
The air pressed in, cold and heavy. A voice slipped through the room, close enough to brush her skin.
The tether is ours.
It skimmed over Elara’s skin, thin as a breath. Her blood went cold.
She flinched back, hair loose and wild around her face. "What did they do to you?"
Sweat slicked Caden’s face. He pushed himself upright, shaking. "I don’t know. But I’m afraid - " He broke off, meeting her eyes. "I’m afraid I’m not myself anymore."
Her chest tightened. She took his face in her hands, ignoring the heat rolling off his skin. "We’ll fight it. You’re not theirs. You’re mine. You belong here."
He went still under her hands, just for a breath. Then he shuddered, grabbing his head. "Elara, you don’t understand. It’s inside me. Whispering. Telling me to obey. To betray. Every time I fight, it gets stronger."
“Then fight harder,” she whispered fiercely.
"Harder?" His laugh was thin, almost broken. "I’m already coming apart." He pressed his palm to his chest, over the mark that throbbed beneath his skin. "Every breath is a fight. I dream in their voices. I wake with their words in my head. Sometimes..." His voice caught. "Sometimes I can’t tell which thoughts are mine."
She flinched. “No. Don’t say that.”
"It’s true." He leaned in, eyes red and desperate. "What if the man you love is already gone? What if I’m just their hound, waiting for a command?"
“Then I’ll break the leash.” Her words rang, sharp as steel.
He laughed, but it broke, rough and close to a sob. "You make it sound easy."
"It is simple." Her fingers tightened on his shoulders. "You’re Caden Verlor. You’re not theirs. You’re not their monster."
He searched her face, holding on. "And if I lose? If the voices drown me, if the mark takes everything?"
“Then I’ll fight for you,” she vowed. “Even if you can’t.”
Silence stretched between them, broken only by their ragged breaths. Then his voice, low and raw:
"Elara, you don’t know what it’s like. It’s a war under my skin. Part of me wants to tear you apart, to kneel, to bring their fire into your hall. The other part - " His jaw tightened. "The other part is begging not to. Begging to hold on to you, to us. But the parts are bleeding together."
Her throat closed. She wanted to call it fear, to deny it, but she’d seen the mark burn. She’d heard the voice.
Still, she said, "You’re not broken. You’re whole. You’re my husband."
He dropped his face into his hands. "Then why does it feel like I’m already losing?"
She shifted closer, voice steady though fear gnawed at her. "Because that’s what they want. That’s their first victory - to make you doubt. To make you think you’re just a puppet. But you’re not."
He looked up, hollow-eyed. “What if I am?”
"Listen to me," she said, voice hard. "A puppet has no will. But you fight. You resist. Every time you pull yourself back, every time you scream, you prove you’re more than what they made. You still belong to yourself."
Her words hit something in him. He trembled, caught between despair and a flicker of hope. "You talk like it’s easy to hold on. But what if I want to let go? Just for a breath, just for peace? I’m so tired, Elara."
She slid her hands down his arms, fingers pressing over the mark. "You’re tired because you’re fighting alone. Let me carry it with you. You think love is only joy? Love is war, Caden. I won’t let you fight it alone."
