I Wanna Ruin Our Friendship

Taking the Next Step

Ch. 110 / 162 Apr 09, 2026

The morning air was crisp as I made my way back to the clinic. I hadn’t planned on coming here—not exactly. But after last night at the bar, something had shifted inside me. I couldn’t keep wallowing in guilt and self-pity. If I wanted to fix my life, I had to take real steps forward.

The small clinic felt familiar now, almost like a strange kind of sanctuary. The receptionist recognized me and smiled warmly as I approached.

“Hi, Emma,” she said. “Are you here for Dr. Foster?”

I nodded. “If she has time. I’d really like to talk to her.”

“Let me check,” the receptionist said, picking up the phone. After awhile, she informed me that Dr. Foster is in.

“Just head down the hallway, and her office will be on your left.”

I took a deep breath, steadying myself as I walked down the hallway. When I reached Dr. Foster’s door, I knocked softly.

“Come in,” her calm voice called.

Dr. Foster looked up from her desk as I entered, her face lighting up with a warm smile.

“Emma,” she said, gesturing for me to sit. “It’s good to see you. How are you feeling?”

“I’m doing better,” I said honestly, taking a seat across from her. “Thank you.”

She nodded, her kind eyes studying me. “What brings you here today?”

I hesitated for only a moment before speaking. “I wanted to ask for your help. Not as a patient this time, but... professionally.”

Her eyebrows lifted slightly, curiosity sparking in her expression. “Go on.”

“I’ve decided to go to college,” I said, my voice growing stronger with each word. “I want to study medicine. I want to be a doctor.”

A soft smile spread across her face. “That’s wonderful, Emma. I think you’d make an excellent doctor.”

“Thank you,” I said, my cheeks flushing. “But I was wondering... if you might have any opportunities here. Like an assistant job or something. I want to start learning now, even before college. I want to do something that matters.”

Dr. Foster leaned back in her chair, her gaze thoughtful. “That’s a big step, Emma. Are you sure you’re ready for that?”

I nodded firmly. “I know I’ve made mistakes—so many mistakes—but I’m serious about this. I want to make things right. I want to help people, and I’m ready to put in the work.”

She was quiet for a moment, studying me carefully. Then, she smiled. “You’re determined. I like that.”

“So... is that a yes?” I asked, holding my breath.

“It’s a yes,” she said, her smile widening. “But there’s one condition.”

“What is it?”

“No mistakes,” she said firmly. “You’ll be working in a professional environment, Emma. You’ll need to be focused, disciplined, and ready to handle the responsibility. Can you do that?”

“Yes,” I said without hesitation. “I can do that.”

Dr. Foster nodded, standing up and extending her hand to me. “Then welcome to the clinic. I’ll have the receptionist get you set up with the paperwork and training schedule.”

Relief and excitement flooded through me as I shook her hand.

“Thank you,” I said, my voice thick with emotion.

“You’ve been through a lot, Emma,” she said gently. “But I can see how strong you’ve become. I think this is going to be a good step for you.”

I smiled, blinking back tears as I stood. “I won’t let you down.”

“I know you won’t,” she said warmly.

As I walked out of the clinic, the weight that had been pressing down on me for so long felt a little lighter. For the first time in what felt like forever, I felt like I was moving forward—not running away, not hiding, but really moving forward.

And it felt good.
