Jade stretched her arms above her head, the sunlight pouring through Mia’s kitchen window. After days of being cooped up and stressed, a sense of freedom was finally starting to settle over her. The idea of a day out with Mia was exactly what she needed—a chance to feel normal again.
“We’re going shopping,” Mia declared as she poured two mugs of coffee, sliding one across the counter to Jade. “No arguments. Retail therapy is the cure for everything.”
Jade grinned, cradling the warm mug in her hands. “You don’t have to convince me. My wardrobe could definitely use some love after weeks of chaos.”
Mia raised an eyebrow. “Chaos is an understatement. You’ve been through the wringer. But don’t worry, by the end of today, you’ll feel like a new person. Trust me.”
Jade sipped her coffee, a sense of excitement bubbling up inside her. “I’m holding you to that.”
The mall was buzzing with energy when they arrived, a mix of shoppers bustling about and the faint hum of music playing overhead. Mia led the charge, practically dragging Jade into the first boutique they passed.
“Oh, this dress would look so good on you,” Mia gushed, holding up a flowing teal sundress.
Jade wrinkled her nose, shaking her head. “I don’t think so. It’s too bright.”
Mia rolled her eyes. “That’s exactly why you need it! You’ve been wearing nothing but neutrals lately. Time to step out of your comfort zone.”
Jade reluctantly took the dress and disappeared into the fitting room. When she stepped out, Mia let out a dramatic gasp. “See? What did I tell you? You look amazing!”
Jade turned to look at herself in the mirror, smoothing the fabric over her hips. “Okay, fine. You were right. It’s cute.”
“‘It’s cute,’” Mia mimicked, laughing. “Girl, it’s more than cute. You look hot. We’re getting it.”
Jade laughed, nodding. “Alright, add it to the pile.”
Mia grinned triumphantly and waved down a store assistant to grab the dress in Jade’s size. “I’m on a roll. Next stop: shoes.”
After a whirlwind tour of several stores, the two women were weighed down with bags and ready for a break. They found a cozy café tucked away in a quiet corner of the mall, the perfect spot to recharge.
“This is exactly what I needed,” Jade said, taking a sip of her iced coffee.
“I told you,” Mia said, biting into a slice of cheesecake. “There’s nothing a little shopping and good food can’t fix.”
Jade picked at her avocado toast, her mood lighter than it had been in weeks. “I almost forgot what it feels like to just… relax. No drama, no overprotective men breathing down my neck, no threats hanging over my head.”
Mia smirked. “Speaking of overprotective men, have you heard from them?”
“Nope,” Jade said, shaking her head. “And honestly? I don’t feel bad about it. They need to realize I can handle myself.”
Mia raised an eyebrow. “You’re bold for saying that. You know they’re probably tearing the city apart looking for you, right?”
Jade shrugged, though a small pang of guilt tugged at her. “Let them. They’ll survive. I needed this.”
Mia laughed, raising her glass. “Here’s to independence.”
Jade clinked her glass against Mia’s, a smile spreading across her face. “Cheers to that.”
