Kieran's POV
The bedroom door closes behind me and the silence feels heavier than it should. Thalia moves toward the window, her back to me, arms wrapped around herself in that protective way she has when her thoughts are somewhere I can't follow.
I watch her the way I used to when everything between us was raw and dangerous. Searching for hesitation in the set of her shoulders. Looking for distance in the way she holds herself apart.
Lysander's words echo through my skull. They're not just yours—they're hers. The accusation underneath: I'm failing her. Failing them. That my brother sees something I'm too blind or too proud to acknowledge.
"Thalia." Her name comes out rougher than I intend.
She turns, and the moonlight catches the planes of her face. Beautiful. Mine. But there's something in her expression that makes my chest tight with fear I refuse to name.
"Talk to me," I say. "Tell me what you're thinking."
"I don't know." She laughs softly, the sound hollow. "Everything feels tangled. The children, the school, Lysander showing up like that..."
"He shouldn't have come."
"But he came. For them." Her eyes meet mine, steady and searching. "He flew across the country because our children were hurting and he couldn't stand to do nothing."
The implication cuts deep. "And I'm doing nothing?"
"I didn't say that."
"You didn't have to." I close the distance between us, unable to bear the space any longer. "I'm trying, Thalia. Every decision I make, every choice—I'm trying to protect this family."
"I know you are." Her voice softens.
"Then why does it feel like I'm losing you?"
The question hangs between us, raw and desperate. I didn't mean to say it out loud, didn't mean to reveal the fear that's been gnawing at me since I watched her touch my brother's arm and thank him for caring about her children.
Our children. Mine. But the way she looked at Lysander...
"You're not losing me." She steps closer, close enough that I can feel the warmth radiating off her skin. "The bond chose you. I chose you."
"Did you?" The words taste bitter. "Or did biology make the choice for both of us?"
"Kieran..."
"I see the way you look at him." I can't stop now, the confession pouring out like poison I've held too long. "Gratitude and softness. He shows up and suddenly you're looking at him like he's something you lost."
"He's the father my children could have had." Her honesty is brutal, unflinching. "Can you blame me for wondering what that would have looked like?"
The admission should destroy me. Instead, it clarifies something I've been afraid to face.
"Wonder all you want." I cup her face in my hands, force her to meet my eyes. "But you're mine. Your wolf knows it. And I will spend every day proving I'm worthy of what we have."
"I don't need you to prove anything."
"Then what do you need?"
Her breath catches. The mate bond flares between us, hot and insistent, responding to proximity and emotion and the undeniable chemistry that's always existed beneath our complicated history.
"You." The word comes out desperate, hungry. "I need you to love me right now. The way only you can."
The request floods through me like wildfire. Certainty crashes over the doubt, the fear, the gnawing insecurity that's been eating me alive since my brother walked through our door.
I kiss her with everything I have.
Not gentle, not asking permission. Claiming and demanding. Reminding her body what her mind seems determined to question. She gasps against my mouth and I swallow the sound, hands sliding into her hair, angling her head back for better access.
Her wolf rises to meet mine immediately.
I feel it—that primal recognition, the instinctive submission that has nothing to do with weakness and everything to do with knowing who she belongs to. Her body arches into mine, seeking contact, seeking the dominance and strength that only I can give her.
"Tell me you're mine." I growl the words against her throat, teeth grazing the mate mark that brands her as claimed.
"Yours." The response comes without hesitation. "Always yours."
I lift her easily, carry her to the bed where we've spent countless nights tangled together. She's pulling at my shirt before her back hits the mattress, desperate hands seeking skin. I help her strip the fabric away, then focus on removing the barriers between us piece by piece.
Her body is a map I've memorized and still want to explore. Every curve, every sensitive spot, every place that makes her gasp and writhe beneath me. I trace them now with my mouth and hands, relearning what's mine.
"Kieran, please..." She's begging, hips lifting toward me, seeking friction I deliberately deny.
"Not yet." I pin her wrists above her head, hold her in place while I worship the body that's belonged to me since the night everything changed. "I want to hear you say it again."
"I'm yours." Her voice breaks on the words. "My wolf knows. My body knows. Please..."
I enter her, watching her face, feeling the heat detonate between us. The connection is immediate and overwhelming—her pleasure echoing through me, my satisfaction flooding back to her, an endless loop of sensation that builds with every movement.
She wraps her legs around my waist, pulling me deeper, instinctively open in ways that have nothing to do with conscious choice. Her wolf recognizes its mate. Her body responds without hesitation, without the complicated doubts that plague her waking thoughts.
This is truth. Raw and undeniable. Whatever questions haunt her mind, her wolf doesn't lie.
I take her with desperate intensity, needing to imprint myself on every cell, every nerve ending, every part of her that might be tempted to wonder about different choices. She throws her body towards me again and again, as being passive isn’t her nature. She cries out beneath me, nails raking down my back, leaving marks that will heal by morning but feel permanent in this moment.
"Mine," I growl as she shatters around me. "Always mine."
The release that follows tears through us both, shared until I can't tell where I end and she begins. We collapse together, breathing hard, bodies still trembling with aftershocks.
For long minutes, neither of us speaks.
I hold her against my chest, feeling her heartbeat gradually slow. The mate mark on her throat pulses with satisfaction, with the contentment that follows claiming. Everything I need to believe we're solid, we're unshakeable, we're exactly what the bond promised.
But then her eyes drift toward the window, where moonlight paints shadows on the wall. Thoughtful. Unsettled. Somewhere I can't follow even with her body still pressed against mine.
"What are you thinking?" I ask, even though I'm not sure I want the answer.
"Nothing important." She smiles, but it doesn't quite reach her eyes. "Just tired."
She's lying. I feel the way her thoughts have turned somewhere private and guarded. Somewhere that might involve a brother who flew across the country to fight for her children when I was still weighing political considerations.
I pull her closer, press my lips to her hair. "I love you."
"I love you too."
The words are genuine. I feel their truth resonate through our connection, warm and steady and real. She does love me. The bond does hold. But—
I lie awake long after she falls asleep, watching the rise and fall of her breathing, memorizing the curve of her face in moonlight. My mate. The mother of my children. The woman I would burn worlds to keep.
Her wolf chose me. Her body responds to mine without hesitation.
I tell myself that's enough. That biology and destiny and the irrefutable chemistry between us will anchor her when her thoughts wander toward what-ifs and might-have-beens.
But somewhere in the quiet hours before dawn, I wonder if I'm lying to myself the same way she lied to me when I asked what she was thinking.
Some truths are too dangerous to speak out loud, even between mates.
