Who's My Triplet's Alpha Daddy?

Chapter 59

Ch. 59 / 245 Apr 30, 2026

I don't make it to the car.

The world narrows to heat, scent, and a pull so intense it nearly brings me to my knees in the grocery store parking lot. My wolf roars inside my chest, demanding, claiming, recognizing a bond that should not exist. Every step away from that woman feels like walking through wet concrete, my body rebelling against the distance my mind insists on creating.

"Uncle Lys?" Phoenix tugs at my sleeve. "You look weird. Are you sick?"

"I'm fine." The lie tastes like ash. "Just tired from the zoo."

"You don't look tired." Orion studies me with clinical precision. "Your pupils are dilated and you're sweating despite the cool temperature. Those are symptoms of acute stress response, not fatigue."

"Thank you for the diagnosis, Dr. Fenris."

"I'm just observing." But his expression is worried now, less clinical and more childish.

Luna says nothing. Just watches me with those knowing eyes, seeing more than I want her to see.

I'm fumbling with the car keys, hands shaking too badly to find the unlock button, when I hear footsteps approaching from behind. The scent hits me again—vanilla and rain and wildflowers—and my wolf surges so violently I have to grip the car door to stay upright.

"Excuse me?"

I turn, and there she is.

She followed me out of the store, her shopping basket abandoned somewhere inside. In the late afternoon light, I can see her more clearly now—blonde hair escaping from a messy bun, pink cardigan over her scrubs, cheeks flushed from hurrying. The perfume she wears is overwhelming to my wolf's senses, a floral sweetness that should be cloying but instead makes every nerve ending sing with recognition.

Human. She's clearly human. No wolf scent underneath the perfume, no supernatural awareness in her eyes, no recognition of what's happening between us beyond ordinary confusion.

And yet my wolf does not lie.

"I'm so sorry about what happened there." She's slightly breathless, apologetic. "I was completely distracted and I practically tackled you. Are you okay? You left so quickly, I wanted to make sure I didn't actually hurt you."

"I'm fine." The words come out rougher than intended. I'm gripping the car door so hard the metal creaks under my fingers. "You didn't hurt me."

"You don't look fine." She tilts her head, studying me with concern that makes my chest ache. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

"Long day." I force my hands to relax, force my voice toward something approaching normal. "The zoo, then errands, then getting run over by distracted shoppers."

She laughs at my weak joke, and the sound slides through me like warm honey. "Fair point. I probably deserve that." She extends her hand, a gesture so ordinary it feels surreal given the chaos inside me. "I'm Caroline Montgomery. And I really am sorry for the collision."

I stare at her outstretched hand. Touching her seems dangerous, impossible, inevitable.

"Lysander." I take her hand and the contact sends electricity racing up my arm. Her skin is warm, her grip firm, and my wolf howls with satisfaction at even this small connection. "Lysander Fenris."

Her eyes widened slightly. "Fenris? Like the law firm?"

"My family's company." I release her hand before I do something stupid like refuse to let go. "You've heard of it?"

"We've had some cases involving corporate liability—your firm's name comes up." She smiles, and something in my chest cracks. "I’m a family law attorney. Small world."

Phoenix materializes at my elbow with the social awareness of a freight train. "Hi! I'm Phoenix. That's my brother Orion and my sister Luna. You smell nice. Like flowers and cake."

Caroline's smile widens as she crouches to Phoenix's level. "Thank you! I'm Caroline. I accidentally bumped into your uncle inside and wanted to apologize." She glances up at me.

"My nieces and nephew, visiting from Seattle." I manage to sound almost normal. "We went to the zoo today."

"The zoo is amazing!" Phoenix launches into a description of meerkat sentinel systems while Caroline listens with genuine interest, asking questions and laughing at the right moments. Orion joins in with supplementary facts about animal cognition. Even Luna edges closer, drawn by Caroline's warmth despite her usual reserve.

I watch this woman—this human woman—charm my family with easy grace, and my understanding of fate shatters into pieces I don't know how to reassemble.

Wolves do not bond with humans.

Caroline has no wolf. I'm certain of it—would smell it on her if she did, would sense the supernatural signature that marks our kind. She's entirely human, entirely ordinary, entirely impossible as my mate.

And yet.

My wolf does not lie. Has never lied, not about danger or desire or the fundamental truths that govern our existence. When it recognized Thalia during her heat, I understood the pull even if I couldn't claim it. When it sensed my brother's bond completing, I felt the rightness of it despite my grief.

Now it screams Caroline's name with the same certainty, the same bone-deep recognition, the same undeniable truth.

Mate. Mine. Forever.

"Uncle Lys?" Luna's voice breaks through my spiral. "Caroline asked you a question."

I blink, refocus on the present. Caroline is watching me with gentle concern, blonde hair catching the fading sunlight.

"Sorry. Zoned out." I attempt a smile that probably looks more like a grimace. "What was the question?"

"I asked if you live here or if you're just visiting with the kids." Her voice is patient, understanding. "You seem... distracted."

"I live here." The words feel inadequate, ridiculous. I'm having a conversation about real estate while my wolf tries to claw through my chest to claim this woman. "Work transfer."

"Welcome to Colorado, then." Her smile does terrible things to my composure. "It's a good place to settle down. The mountains are beautiful, and the people are friendly." She pauses, something flickering in her expression. "Even the distracted lawyers who tackle strangers in grocery stores."

Phoenix laughs, delighted. "You should come to dinner with us! Uncle Lysander is making pasta and he always makes too much."

My heart stops. Restarts. Stops again.

"Phoenix—" I start, but Caroline is already shaking her head with gentle regret.

"I appreciate the invitation, but I just got off a double shift and I'm completely exhausted." She straightens, addresses me directly. "Maybe another time? If you're not too traumatized by our first meeting?"

Another time. The words hang between us, weighted with possibility.

I should say no. Should protect the life I've built with Claire, the peace I've finally found, the happiness that doesn't require supernatural intervention. Should walk away from this impossible connection before it destroys everything.

"Maybe." The word escapes before I can stop it. "The kids are here until tomorrow, but after that..."

"Here." She pulls out her phone, hands it to me. "Put your number in. I'll text you, and you can decide if you want to risk another collision."

My fingers move without permission, entering digits I shouldn't share, creating a connection I shouldn't want.

She takes the phone back, glances at the screen, smiles. "Nice to meet you, Lysander Fenris. And Phoenix, Orion, Luna—you three are wonderful."

She walks away, pink cardigan disappearing into the parking lot crowd.

I stand frozen beside my car, watching her go, feeling the bond stretch between us like elastic, undeniable and impossible. My wolf wags his tale in anticipation. And nothing will ever be the same.
