The words rise in my throat, heavy as stones.
I look at the pack assembled before me—wolves who have watched my struggle, judged my heart, waited for this moment with barely concealed impatience. I look at Kieran, standing tall despite the uncertainty in his eyes. I look at Lysander, who has gone completely still, as if bracing for a blow he knows is coming.
"I choose Kieran Fenris." My voice comes out steady enough to convince everyone but myself. "As my mate, my Alpha, and the partner I stand beside as Luna of this pack."
The words settle into the hall like anchors dropping into deep water.
"The mate bond between us is real, recognized by supernatural law and the Moon herself. Whatever questions I have carried in my heart, whatever doubts I have struggled to silence—they do not change the fundamental truth of what we are to each other." I turn to face Kieran fully, letting the pack see my commitment. "I invoke that bond now. I claim it openly, without reservation, as the foundation on which this pack's stability will rest."
Kieran's expression shifts—relief flooding across his features, followed by something deeper, more vulnerable. He reaches for my hand and I let him take it, feel his fingers interlock with mine, feel the mate bond flare warm and certain between us.
"Thalia." His voice is rough with emotion. "You mean this?"
"I mean every word." I squeeze his hand, draw strength from the contact. "You are my chosen Alpha. The man I will stand beside until my last breath."
Relief ripples through the hall like a physical wave—tensions releasing, alliances dissolving back into unified hierarchy, the fracture I created beginning to seal itself. Order settles back into place, the ancient structure reasserting its hold.
But I am not finished.
I turn to face Lysander, and the words I must speak now are softer but no less deliberate. His face has gone pale, his jaw clenched against whatever he's feeling. He knew this was coming—must have known from the moment I said I would choose duty over desire—but knowing doesn't make the wound any less deep.
"Lysander." My voice breaks slightly on his name. "I need you to hear what I'm about to say."
"I already know." His words come out barely above a whisper.
I move closer to him, close enough that the pack can see but far enough that this feels almost private. "I love you. That will not change, no matter what I just declared."
His breath catches. Hope and pain war across his features.
"But I cannot love you as a mate." The words tear something loose inside me. "I love you as the brother of my chosen Alpha. As the uncle my children adore. As the man who fought for their wellbeing."
Tears slide down my cheeks now, unstoppable. "You are extraordinary, Lysander. Everything you've become these past months—the strength, the conviction, the willingness to fight for what you believe—I am so proud to have witnessed it."
"But it wasn't enough." His voice cracks.
"It was everything." I reach out, cup his face in my hands. "You made me feel seen, and you listened when no one else would. You showed me that I could be loved for who I am, not just what the bond assigned me to be."
"Then why?" The question comes out broken. "If I was everything, why choose him?"
"I’m Luna," I let him see the grief in my eyes, the cost of what I'm doing. My children need their family intact, inheritance secure, and future protected. Loving you the way you want to would destroy everything I've built."
He closes his eyes, draws a shuddering breath. When he opens them again, the devastation is still there, but something else has joined it—acceptance, maybe. Understanding.
"You're sacrificing yourself for them." Not accusation, just recognition.
"I'm choosing the path that keeps us whole." I drop my hands from his face. "All of us."
The silence stretches between us, heavy with everything we cannot have.
"Thank you." The words come out quiet but steady. "For protecting my children and loving them the way they deserve to be loved."
"I will always love them." His voice firms. "That doesn't change because of this."
"I know." I step back, put distance between us. "And they will always love you. You'll be there for their first shifts, their graduations, their triumphs and failures. You'll be family, Lysander. Just not the kind we once imagined."
He nods slowly, processing the future I've outlined—present in their lives but never holding the place his heart craved.
"I should go." The words come out rough. "Before I say something that makes this harder than it already is."
"Lysander—"
"No." He holds up a hand. "You made your choice. I understand it, even if it feels like being torn apart." His eyes find mine one last time. "You did what you had to do. I won't make you feel guilty for surviving the only way you could."
He turns and walks toward the exit, every step carrying him further from the life he wanted. The pack parts for him silently, wolves stepping aside to let him pass without meeting his eyes.
At the doorway, he pauses. Looks back over his shoulder.
"Take care of her." The words are directed at Kieran, who has moved to stand beside me. "If you hurt her again, I won't wait for a formal challenge."
The heavy doors close behind him with a sound like finality.
Kieran's arm wraps around my shoulders, pulling me against his side. When I look up at him, he's smiling—relief and joy and something like triumph softening his features.
"You chose me." Wonder colors his voice.
"I chose the pack." The correction is gentle but necessary. "I chose our children and the stability that keeps everyone safe."
"No, you chose me." He says it again, as if repetition will make it more real.
Inside, I feel something tear loose—a quiet grief that no crown can shield me from. The part of me that loved Lysander freely, that felt seen and chosen for who I was, settles into a corner of my heart where it will live forever, acknowledged but never again indulged.
The pack begins to disperse, relief giving way to celebration. Wolves approach to offer congratulations, to pledge renewed loyalty, to welcome the resolution of a crisis that had threatened to tear them apart.
I smile and accept their words, play the role of Luna restored. But when I close my eyes, I see Lysander's face as he walked away. The devastation he tried to hide. The love he'll carry with him into whatever future awaits beyond these walls.
I chose Kieran.
I will learn to live with what that choice cost me.
