The two Betas who had set out to gather intelligence on the hunters returned with their findings, confirming the whereabouts of their elusive enemies. This revelation undeniably supported Raymond's claims, proving that he hadn't been lying.
Persuaded by Celeste, Kent finally relented and released his tight grip on Raymond. Rather than keeping him constantly restrained, they settled for locking him away. As for Raymond's ultimate fate, they decided to postpone the decision until after they dealt with the other hunters.
The hunters' hideout wasn't too far from where the wolf pack currently roamed, but the wolves weren't intimately familiar with the specific location. However, thanks to the information provided by the Betas, they learned that the hunters had nestled themselves deep within a dense forest, guarded by hills on each side. It presented an unexpected advantage for the werewolves—they could use the higher ground to stealthily observe their enemies while remaining hidden.
After absorbing the reports, the wolf pack convened to strategize. They dispatched a group of their strongest and most agile members to covertly position themselves within the depths of the forest. Their plan was to strike when the cover of darkness had lulled the hunters into a false sense of security.
Thus, now the wolves were laying in wait, ready to pounce at the opportune moment. With the sun gradually descending, their carefully crafted scheme was about to be put into action.
The plan seemed flawlessly devised, yet as Celeste arrived at the designated location, an unsettling sensation gnawed at her. Something just didn't feel right about this place.
First and foremost, the warehouse was sandwiched between two imposing hills—a perfect vantage point for the wolves to skulk and observe. But the hunters, notorious for their cunning, wouldn't simply settle for such an exposed headquarters, right?
The existence of werewolves still lingered in the realm of folklore, a well-kept secret whispered among the select few. And now, these hunters were conducting twisted experiments on the very creatures they sought to exploit. One would assume they'd choose a clandestine, hidden haven for their malevolent pursuits. But no, they had opted for a location where anyone could leisurely spy on their every move. Such a choice seemed inexplicably irrational, leaving Celeste with a sense of disbelief and skepticism.
"Maybe it's just because this warehouse is already secret enough. It's tucked away in the perfect secret spot. I mean, who in the world could even find this place, right? If it wasn't for our keen sense of smell, we wouldn't have stumbled upon it after so many twists and turns in the forest," Emma chimed in.
"Well, you got a point there," Celeste conceded, but a tiny thread of unease still lingered. "But seriously, take a gander at that warehouse. It's all beat-up and ancient-looking from the outside, hardly worth a second glance. I can't fathom how they'd choose such a dump for a laboratory."
"Maybe that's exactly what they're going for. You know, the whole 'under the radar' deal. Only by blending in can they pull off their hush-hush experiments. Besides, who's to say they ain't got some secret basement or something?" Ben commented, his gaze locked onto the warehouse below. "And check out those two hunters patrolling down there. Even from up here, I can smell their hunter stench."
He crinkled his nose, a disgusted expression creeping across his face.
Following Ben's line of sight, Celeste peered downward and spotted the two hunters on their rounds. They toted shotguns on their backs, but their body language seemed downright casual. It was obvious that they hadn't caught a whiff of any wolf pack lurking about.
Celeste eyed their shotguns. She couldn't help but wonder if they were loaded with silver bullets. Then again, considering they were just patrolmen, that possibility seemed slimmer than a toothpick.
Still, try as she might, Celeste couldn't shake off that eerie feeling weighing heavy on her heart. Something was off, but try as she might, she couldn't put her finger on what, exactly.
Then Celeste felt a weight on her shoulder. When she turned her head, she found Jeremy's long fingers. "Don't worry about it, Cel. Today, we're gonna crush these hunters once and for all!"
His words offered Celeste a glimmer of reassurance. She couldn't help but wonder if it was their unique, destiny-forged connection that influenced her so. With Jeremy by her side, whenever she caught a glimpse of his warm, unwavering eyes, she felt as if nothing could ever truly defeat them. It was like all their fears were nothing more than petty nuisances.
But as her attention shifted away from Jeremy and settled back onto the dimly lit warehouse, that nagging sense of unease came rushing back. Determined to shake off the creeping doubts, Celeste shook her head, as if physically dispelling the unsettling feeling from her mind.
Just then, the sound of an approaching vehicle caught their attention. It crept up alongside the road, unassuming and inconspicuous. Gradually, it glided to a halt right at the entrance of the warehouse.
In unison, the two hunters exchanged a glance and advanced toward the vehicle with purposeful strides. One of them spoke into a crackling walkie-talkie, his words lost in the wind. Judging by their relaxed postures and familiar demeanor, it was evident that the hunters were acquainted with the mysterious car.
The car door creaked open, revealing a bald man stepping out. He strolled leisurely towards the trunk, his every movement hinting at a secret, suspenseful agenda. With a flick of his wrist, the trunk sprang open, revealing what was hidden there.
Celeste wasn't far from the hunters. And her sharp werewolf eyes captured every detail in an instant. What lay inside the trunk? A wolf—a majestic creature, now matted with gory, crimson streaks. It lay motionless, trapped within the confines of its temporary prison.
Then she heard a gasp.
"Jimmy! What the hell did you do to him?" A burst of angry and frustrated exclamations erupted from the werewolf pack, startling Celeste.
She whipped her head around, catching sight of a rogue emerging boldly from their covert hiding spot. In a split second, he broke into a sprint, propelled by an unseen surge of determination. But before he could take more than a couple of strides, his wolf sprang forth, hurtling towards the hunters with unparalleled ferocity.
"Shit!" Kent cursed under his breath.
