Unwanted Mate

Chapter 144

Ch. 144 / 165 Jun 23, 2025

Celeste couldn't believe it. These hunters were actually using wolfsbane against them. Were they trying to kill them?

The scent of the wolfsbane was thin in the air, but it clung to her nostrils like an everlasting curse. She shuddered. Just the thought of that smell sent a prickling sensation down her spine, making her skin crawl.

No wonder those damn hunters suited up in protective gear. Wolfsbane wasn't just rough on werewolves, it packed a punch for humans too. Though, admittedly, it didn't hit humans as hard as it did the werewolves.

As the hunters sprayed mist from their guns, the air became a deathly trap, closing in on them like an invisible snare. But the wolfsbane was diluted in the water and lost some of its toxic potency, so it wasn't a direct werewolf killer. But that didn't mean it wouldn't cause them pain.

The drops of water, infused with wolfsbane, landed on Celeste's fur. And immediately, it was like a thousand tiny needles pricking her skin, setting fire to every single hair follicle. Those droplets felt less like water and more like minuscule fiery daggers, searing her body. Her legs turned to jelly, threatening to buckle beneath her weight. But she gritted her teeth, her survival instincts pushing her to keep forging ahead.

Painful as it was, Celeste knew this wasn't a fatal blow. These hunters were masters of their craft. She couldn't help but wonder just how many poor werewolves they'd tested on to concoct this perfect potion—a blend that crippled werewolves' combat abilities without snuffing out their lives entirely.

Run, run, run! It was the only melody playing in Celeste's mind. The concentration of wolfsbane in the air wasn't overwhelming, but lingering too long in this trap would only lead to a painfully gruesome end.

Taking a quick glance at her fellow wolves, Celeste saw the same terror painted across their furry faces. The fear of wolfsbane was hardwired into their instincts, rendering them motionless. Panic gripped the pack as they scattered in every direction, running wild without a sense of purpose, their coordinated formation shattered into chaos completely.

The werewolves and rogues raced forward, but they had never fought alongside each other before. They stumbled and collided in their frantic escape, not knowing one another well enough to coordinate. Chaos reigned supreme, and within this frenzy, the hunters seized the perfect opportunity to strike. The armored vehicle relentlessly pushed forward, ensnaring them in a web of impending doom.

Amidst the pandemonium, Celeste's ears caught the echoes of Jeremy and Kent's howls, desperately trying to command the fleeing wolf pack. Yet, their instructions clashed—Jeremy urging them to go east, while Kent insisted on heading west. This only added to the mayhem, leaving the pack in disarray.

Gunshots pierced through the cacophony, mingling with the howls, rendering Jeremy and Kent's commands indistinguishable in the sea of noise. Celeste fretted that their messages would go unheard, and her fears seemed to manifest as the wolf pack, resembling a swarm of headless flies, careened in every direction, colliding haplessly.

But after the brief chaos subsided, Jeremy's voice cut through the commotion, drowning out Kent's. With a unified call, a semblance of order was restored among the pack, and they rallied together, dashing eastward. While hunters emerged on the eastern front, brandishing their shotguns, the odds seemed less favorable in the west, where the treacherous wolfsbane awaited, a sprawling net of danger.

In the midst of the turmoil, Celeste's gaze swept frantically, searching for a glimpse of Jeremy. Miraculously, their eyes locked, and amidst the chaos, a flicker of relief washed over her. With Jeremy's safety confirmed, she breathed a sigh of temporary respite.

Wasting not a precious moment, the unified wolf pack surged forward, their collective momentum aimed at breaking free from the hunter's encirclement. They longed to disappear into the sanctuary of the forest, where they could scatter and evade the pursuers. The hunters' vehicles would be powerless to penetrate the dense woodland.

The other werewolves, too, grasped the same realization, their determination fueling their accelerated pace. With each paw pounding the ground, their sense of purpose intensified as they charged ahead.

Celeste's ears perked up as the wind whooshed past her, carrying the exhilarating sound. Gunshots echoed through the air, as if the hunters themselves were bursting with excitement. A bullet whizzed dangerously close to Celeste's leg, but her wolf-like instincts kicked in, and she swiftly changed her direction, narrowly avoiding the fatal projectile.

Just a little further! Celeste urged herself, determined to break through this wretched wall of hunters and reach the safety beyond. With newfound determination, she picked up her pace, her feet pounding the ground in rhythmic urgency.

But up ahead, the hunters aimed their dark, foreboding barrels directly at Celeste, freezing her muscles for a split second. She wondered if her legs could carry her fast enough to escape their gunfire, considering her current momentum.

In a blink of an eye, a figure lunged forward, toppling one of the hunters to the ground before he could pull the trigger. The hunter's gun pointed aimlessly at the sky, its futile cries falling on deaf ears. Jeremy's wolf was ready to sink his teeth into the hunter's throat. Yet, amidst the chaos, they both knew time was not on their side. Jeremy's wolf turned his head slightly, a silent urging for Celeste to run as fast as she could.

Together, the two wolves charged forward, their synchronized steps creating a symphony of determined footfalls. However, a palpable distance still separated them.

Celeste's heart thumped wildly in her chest, matching the rhythm of her frantic sprint. Gasping for breath, she pushed her tired body to the limit. Amidst the pandemonium, she caught a fleeting glimpse of something peculiar—a glint of light that pierced the chaos and fixated on them with an eerie intent.

"No! Not Jeremy," Celeste thought, her eyes widening with alarm.

Raising her head, she spotted a hunter lurking among the nearby hills, taking careful aim. The gun in his hands gleamed with a sinister aura, its silver barrel shimmering in the fading twilight. Even from this distance, Celeste could sense the imminent danger, the impending doom contained within that metallic weapon.

Then, in a swift, fluid motion, a silver bullet emerged from the gun's chamber. Its liquid mercury-like form seemed to dance through the air, racing towards its intended target—Jeremy's very wolf.
