"I know someone who can make Eva speak. I will get the person," Bryce said and pulled out his phone. "Hello Bernard," he said as soon as the call was answered.
At the central police station, the chief left his office to see Eva in her withholding cell. Even though Eva was in prison, she was well taken care of. She was kept in a separate place and was well provided for.
"I just got off the phone with the warden of the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. You will be well taken care of till Susan figures out a way to get you out," he said.
"Okay," Eva replied.
"Good," the chief said. "The court proceeding will be very short since you have admitted committing the crime. Once that is done, you will be safely transported to Bedford Hills Correctional Facility and Susan will pick things up from there," he added.
"When is the court hearing?" Eva asked biting into her sandwich and sipping her tea.
"Tomorrow," the chief replied. "Hope the food is good," he inquired.
"Yes, it's okay. I am in prison. So the feeling is different but it's okay," Eva replied.
"Okay," he replied. "What would you like for lunch?" he asked.
"I would choose from the menu when the time comes," Eva replied.
"Okay," the chief said and his phone rang. "Excuse," he said and started walking away from the cell where Eva was being kept.
"What is it?" the chief said as he walked away.
"Mr Moore is here," the person said from the other end of the call.
"Take him to my office and tell him to make himself comfortable," the chief said.
"Sir, he came with a strange woman," the person informed him and the chief frowned.
"I am coming," the chief said and ended the call wondering who else Devon wanted to involve in the case.
The chief walked to his office and pushed the door open.
"Mr Moore," he said and was greeted by Bryce, Matilda and another man.
"Your countenance has changed upon seeing our face. Were you expecting Devon Moore?" Matilda asked with her chair turned, facing the chief with her side.
"No," the chief replied with a frown and made his way to his desk.
Matilda turned her chair to face him and so did Bryce. Bernard stood on the side next to Bryce.
"To what pleasure do I owe this visit," the chief said relaxing in his seat wondering why these people were in their office.
"The man standing there," Bryce said pointing to Bernard. "He is Eva's fiancee. He wants to speak with his fiancee but your people have denied him the opportunity. I just want to find out, if Eva is banned from seeing visitors?" Bryce said. "Stick to the truth," he said.
"No," the chief replied recognizing Matilda as a member of the Davis family. He has heard about them getting a new Don and he was already aware of what the Davis family can do. "It might be an honest misunderstanding. I will ask one of my officers to get her for you," the chief said.
"Good," Bryce said and Matilda smiled.
The chief picked up his phone and called in the officer he was working with and asked him to come over to his office.
"Sir, you called," the officer said once inside the chief's office.
"This is Eva's fiancee. He wishes to see Eva. Bring her to the small room, so he can see her," the chief said.
"Sir," the officer said and quickly left to carry out the chief's instructions understanding specifically what he meant.
A couple of minutes went by and the officer returned to take Bernard to see Eva. Bryce and Matilda waited in the chief's office and engaged him in other talks.
Inside the small room, Eva was so happy to see Bernard but Bernard could not return the excitement. He was very quiet and seemed very dull.
"If you are still unhappy seeing me, why did you come to see me?" Eva asked after realizing Bernard was unresponsive to her hug.
"I have known you for a while Eva. I know some of the schemes you pull to send women away from me," Bernard began. "Murder is not one of the things you do. So why?" he asked looking very serious.
"What do you mean why?" Eva asked also frowning as they both sat behind the provided seat and round table.
"I just couldn't bring myself to accept the fact that, you will go as far as murder two members of the Moore family just to get rid of Angela," Bernard said.
"Oh, so he thinks I murdered the Moore family members to get rid of Angela," Eva thought and rolled her eyes.
"Eva, why?" Bernard asked. "I was going to marry you. So why?" he asked.
"Someone needed to teach that girl a lesson," Eva said folding her arms across her chest.
"I considered many things. I went back down memory lane and remembered us. When I first met you. A beautiful woman, full of fun. The thoughts made me consider many things. I told myself, my reason for cutting off our friendship was not valid. You are a nice person. I felt it was wrong to treat you the way I did. I know you did all that because you love me. I gave myself the chance to look at you differently. Look at you as a woman. You were going to be my wife soon and I need to learn to love you," Bernard said and Eva stared at him, his words breaking her on the inside. "Just when I found a reason to love you, this comes up," he added and Eva suddenly looked regretful.
"I can forgive you for all other things and still learn to love you but murder, no," Bernard said and stood up.
"Wait," Eva said, her voice filled with evidence of how shattered she felt listening to Bernard.
Bernard stood there staring at her. Eva drew closer and hugged Bernard resting her head on his chest.
"I am not a murderer," Eva said, her pain evident in her voice.
"Anyone who takes the life of another person, especially the innocent one is a murderer," Bernard said and pulled Eva off himself.
That is all it took for Eva to confess everything to Bernard. She told him everything that she knew and how it all happened in detail. Despite everything, Eva truly loves Bernard and wouldn't want to be seen as a murderer in his eyes.
"This is what is going to happen. I want you to bring the true criminals to light. We can negotiate a short sentence for you. Once you are out of prison, we can talk about you and me," Bernard said and Eva nodded, tears flowing down her face like a fountain.
Bernard left the place and soon left the station with Bryce and Matilda. Bernard knew how Eva felt about him, so he used that to get her to confess. About his statement of talking about them when she came out of prison, he was not entirely sure.
"She confessed and she is ready to tell the truth in court tomorrow," Bernard informed Bryce.
"Did you do the recording?" Bryce asked.
"Shoot! I forgot," Bernard said.
"We need to get her confession on record. Just in case something goes wrong," Matilda said and Bryce agreed while they both stood outside next to their parked cars.
"I can do that," Bernard said and went back to the station.
Bernard returned in less than ten minutes with a grim face.
"What happened?" Bryce asked.
"Did you get the recording?" Matilda asked.
"She is unconscious, dead. I don't know," Bernard said staring at the ground.
He didn't have feelings for Eva but the thought of her being dead shook him.
"What happened?" Bryce asked.
"I heard a gunshot just before I could enter the room where I had engaged her. I rushed in only to find Eva on the floor with an officer stooping over her speaking to someone on a call. I think he is getting an ambulance or something," Bernard reported. "I was asked to leave when other officers started coming over.
"There is a mole in this station," Bryce said disappointed by what had happened.
"They want to silence her," Matilda said but Bernard looked very sad.
