Chapter 161: Checkmate - Part 2

Ch. 161 / 193 Mar 05, 2025

"How does this scandal work in our favour?" George asked after updating Matilda with their plan.

"Angela left home and Bryce followed her after seeing the news. He was furious. He found Angela in an abandoned place, meeting up with a man. He moves in to claim her, maybe just watching her from hiding. Eduardo's team opened fire on him. Bryce dies, Angela gets wounded and Zora dies. No one would believe Angela because of this news. My son comes back home to me," Matilda narrated smiling like things would play out like that.

George frowned staring at her.

"The scandal may be one thing but don't forget the police would investigate," George pointed out.

"So take care of that. Money makes the rule," Matilda said and stood up. "Everything goes down tonight. No mistake," she added and walked away.

Back at Bryce's new place, Angela sat on the bed worried and in tears, while Bryce tried to calm her down.

"Everything is going to be alright. I promise to bring Zora home safe and sound," Bryce assured her and kissed the top of her head.

There was a knock on the door and Bryce invited the person in knowing it was Martin. Martin entered carrying a briefcase. Bryce got down from the bed and walked to the study table with Martin.

"I was able to get some cash using the ATM. I topped it up with some papers," Martin said, opening the briefcase.

Bryce looked into the briefcase which had lined up bundles of cash. He picked the top bundles and it was all cash. He pulled a bundle from below and it was a couple of dollar bills at the front and back, but in the middle were cut-out pieces of paper which were the same size as the real dollar bill.

"This would do. We will have limited time. Make sure you get the police to the scene within the time frame," Bryce said to Martin.

"Yes sir," Martin acknowledged.

Bryce closed the briefcase and Martin headed for the exit. Bryce carried the briefcase to the bed and Martin closed the door on his way out.

"They intend to use you to get me but I would not let them harm you, me or your friend," Bryce said sitting on the bed next to Angela.

"This is what you are going to do," Bryce said. You will carry this briefcase and go to the address they gave you. Call them back and let them know you brought the cash," he explained. I will be right behind you. Martin and I will take care of everything else. I promise I will protect you," he assured her and kissed her.

Angela kissed him back but could not hold back her tears. Zora and Bryce, the two most important people in her life, were both in danger.

"You will be fine," Bryce said and he planted a kiss on her forehead cupping the side of her face.

He wiped her tears with his thumb and planted another kiss on the tip of her nose.

"I love you," Bryce said and Angela held his hands.

"Promise me, you will not die out there," Angela requested in a trembling voice.

"I promise," Bryce promised like he owned his life but it was the only way to get Angela moving.

He is not sure whether or not he will be alive once he encounters those who want to kill him. He was sure of one thing though. He was ready to sacrifice his life to protect Angela, Zora and his unborn child.

"It's time," Bryce said and Angela kissed Bryce again.

"Stay alive," she said before grabbing the briefcase with trembling hands.

Bryce had explained everything to her after updating her on what was going on. They were both too engulfed in their current situation, so they were not aware of the scandal spreading like wildfire on social media.

Bryce followed Angela out of the apartment. Martin had already left with the recording to the police station to meet up with a specific officer.

"I would be right behind you," Bryce said to Angela and stopped a taxi for her.

"Please be safe," Angela whispered to Bryce before getting into the taxi.

Bryce went back into the compound and got into the Range Rover. He started the car and exited the compound onto the road.

He followed the taxi Angela was in closely. Angela was in the taxi occasionally looking behind her. She was happy to see Bryce was right behind her.

Bryce slowed down and allowed some distance between them when he realized the taxi had made a turn onto a road which was void of people and cars.

"This must be the place," Bryce whispered on his lips as he deemed his car lights.

Inside the taxi, Angela looked out the car window scanning the strange environment.

"Ma'am, are you sure this is the place?" the taxi driver asked Angela. "It doesn't look like anyone lives here or even comes here," he said with concern.

"I am meeting up with someone. This is the address I was given," Angela replied.

"Ma'am, I would suggest you call the person. It's late and this place doesn't look safe," the driver said with concern.

"I am sure it's the place and I will be fine," Angela said, her voice betraying her. "How much is my fare?" she asked.

The driver stared at Angela for a while and moved his gaze to the briefcase lying on the seat next to her.

"It's 35 dollars," the taxi driver replied already suspecting something wasn't right.

Angela picked up some money from her purse and gave it to the driver. She got down pulling the briefcase with her.

The driver turned around and drove away while Angela stood there scared and scanning the quiet environment with poor lights.

Inside the car, the driver pulled out his phone and called 911.

"911, what is your emergency," came the service-provided lady.

"I just dropped off a young lady who looks pregnant at a destination. I believe she is in trouble," the driver reported.

"Okay, kindly describe the location," the lady said.

"The road is closed and the area looks abandoned," the driver replied and gave the location to the lady.

"Hang around, help is on the way," the lady said.

Angela on the other hand called the number that had called her earlier.

"I am here. I have your money. It's my friend okay?" Angela said multiple things in one breath.

"Do you see the building with the broken door?" the person asked and Angela scanned her environment before her gaze fell on a decapitated-looking house standing a couple of distances away from where she stood.

"Yes," Angela replied.

"Good, walk towards it," the man said and ended the call.

Angela stared at the house in the distance which looked like it had been half burnt and started walking towards it through a small path which goes through a destroyed field.

Bryce had also parked his car somewhere safe and was walking in the direction, Angela's taxi had gone.

Eduardo's men had already arrived and were hiding in vantage points with their gaze fixated on Angela as she walked towards the abandoned house.
