Avery Kane Deveraux woke up to the soft glow of sunlight streaming through the windows of Ryan Hayes’s bedroom. She stretched, feeling the satisfying ache of a restful night’s sleep. The bed beside her was empty, and a folded note rested on the pillow where Ryan had been.
Curious, she reached for the note and smiled as she read:
“Good morning, beautiful. I had to leave early for work. Can’t wait to see you. – Ryan”
Avery chuckled softly and set the note aside. With no pressing plans for the day, she decided to spend the morning being productive.
Ryan’s house was charming—modern but inviting, with warm wood accents and neutral tones that made it feel effortlessly sophisticated. Avery decided to tidy up as a way of showing her appreciation for his hospitality.
She started in the kitchen, wiping down the counters and organizing the spice rack. Then she moved to the living room, fluffing the pillows on the couch and vacuuming the rug. When everything sparkled, she decided to cook him a meal.
Pasta seemed like the perfect choice—something comforting and hearty. She found fresh ingredients in the fridge and whipped up a creamy chicken Alfredo, adding her own twist with roasted garlic and parmesan. The aroma filled the house, making it feel even cozier.
After cleaning and cooking, Avery found herself curious about the rest of Ryan’s home. She hadn’t explored much beyond the main living areas, and with time to spare, she decided to take a look around.
Ryan’s taste was impeccable—every room was carefully curated, from the plush furniture to the minimalist artwork on the walls. As she wandered down the hallway, she came across a door slightly ajar. She pushed it open and gasped softly.
The room was breathtaking. It was a study, but it felt more like a sanctuary. Shelves lined with books reached up to the high ceilings, each section meticulously organized. A large, mahogany desk sat in the center of the room, its surface polished to a shine. On the desk were neat stacks of papers, a leather-bound notebook, and an antique globe.
Floor-to-ceiling windows flooded the space with natural light, and the view overlooked a small garden outside. A plush armchair sat in the corner with a soft blanket draped over it, as if inviting someone to sit and read for hours.
“Wow,” Avery murmured, running her fingers along the spines of the books. “This is incredible.”
She noticed a small collection of framed photographs on one of the shelves. One was of Ryan as a boy, smiling brightly with his parents. Another was of him at what looked like a graduation ceremony. She smiled, feeling a deeper appreciation for the man she was getting to know.
As she explored the room, her elbow accidentally brushed against a small statue on one of the lower shelves. It wobbled slightly, and before she could catch it, she heard a soft click.
Startled, Avery stepped back as the entire bookcase began to shift. Slowly, it swung outward, revealing a hidden passageway.
“What the…?” she whispered, staring in disbelief.
