Avery Kane Deveraux stepped off the small charter plane and onto the sunlit tarmac of Bora Bora. The balmy breeze carried the scent of saltwater and tropical flowers, wrapping her in a warm embrace. She turned to Ryan Hayes, who was pulling their luggage from the plane with a wide grin on his face.
“Wow,” she said, taking in the breathtaking scenery. The turquoise waters stretched endlessly, dotted with overwater bungalows that seemed to float on the crystal-clear lagoon. Lush green mountains loomed in the distance, their peaks brushing against the soft clouds.
“Not bad, huh?” Ryan said, coming to stand beside her.
“Not bad?” Avery repeated, giving him an incredulous look. “This is paradise.”
Ryan chuckled, slinging an arm around her shoulders. “I thought you could use a break from all the board meetings and corporate chaos.”
“I didn’t realize you meant this,” Avery said, still awestruck. “You’ve outdone yourself, Ryan.”
“Wait until you see our villa,” he teased, leading her toward the awaiting boat that would take them to their bungalow.
The ride across the lagoon was surreal. The water was so clear that Avery could see schools of colorful fish darting beneath the surface. When they reached their villa, she felt like she was stepping into a dream.
The bungalow was a masterpiece of luxury and simplicity. The wooden deck stretched over the water, complete with a private infinity pool and lounge chairs. Inside, the space was airy and open, with glass floors in the living room that offered a view of the sea life below.
“Ryan,” Avery said as she wandered into the bedroom, where floor-to-ceiling windows framed the endless ocean. “This is… insane. Are you sure this isn’t someone else’s honeymoon suite?”
Ryan laughed, setting their luggage down. “Positive. You deserve this, Avery. You work harder than anyone I know, and I thought we both could use a little escape.”
She turned to him, a soft smile on her lips. “Thank you. I mean it. This is incredible.”
Ryan stepped closer, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “You’re incredible. I just wanted to give you a vacation that matches.”
After settling in, the pair decided to explore the island. They rented bicycles and pedaled along winding paths lined with palm trees and vibrant hibiscus flowers. Avery couldn’t stop smiling, the warm breeze tugging at her hair as she took in the idyllic scenery.
“Race you to the beach,” Ryan called, speeding ahead.
“Oh, you’re on!” Avery shouted, laughing as she pedaled faster.
When they reached the beach, she hopped off her bike, out of breath but grinning. Ryan, already victorious, stood waiting with his hands on his hips.
“I think I won,” he said smugly.
“Barely,” Avery shot back, playfully swatting his arm.
They spent the afternoon snorkeling in the lagoon, marveling at the vibrant coral reefs and the abundance of marine life. Avery felt a childlike giddiness as she spotted a sea turtle gliding gracefully through the water.
“This is amazing,” she said later as they floated side by side, the sun warming their faces.
Ryan reached over, taking her hand. “I’m glad you’re happy.”
