The halls of Crestwood Academy bustled with students buzzing about the Winter Ball, but Ryan Hayes’s mind was focused on something far more personal. Leaning against the lockers, he glanced around until he spotted Camila Diaz, the head cheerleader, sauntering toward him with her signature air of confidence.
“Ryan,” she said with a sly smile, stopping in front of him. “What could possibly make the great Ryan Hayes want to talk to me?”
He smirked, though his tone was serious. “I need your help.”
Camila’s interest piqued immediately. “Help with what? Or should I say… who?”
“Avery,” Ryan admitted, his jaw tightening. “She’s spending too much time with Shawn, and he’s not who she thinks he is.”
Camila chuckled, tossing her blonde curls over her shoulder. “Ah, the mysterious new guy. I was wondering when you’d get tired of being sidelined.”
Ryan’s eyes darkened. “It’s not about jealousy. Shawn’s hiding something, and I need her to see that.”
“Of course it’s not jealousy,” Camila said, her voice dripping with mock sympathy. “But let me guess—you’re hoping for a redemption arc? The bully who turned into the good guy?”
Ryan’s fists clenched, but he stayed calm. “Call it whatever you want. Can you help me or not?”
Camila tilted her head, considering. “You know, Ryan, you’re not exactly innocent in all of this. But… I do love a good challenge. What’s the plan?”
“We make her doubt him,” Ryan said simply. “Make her question his loyalty. If she starts to see cracks in their little connection, I’ll be there to pick up the pieces.”
Camila’s smile widened. “Now that I can work with. Leave it to me.”
Camila wasted no time. Her first move was spreading subtle, insidious rumors about Shawn. Standing near the lockers one morning, she made sure her voice carried as she spoke to a group of cheerleaders.
“I heard Shawn’s been texting a girl from his old school,” Camila said casually, loud enough for passing students to hear. “Can you imagine? Poor Avery.”
It didn’t take long for the whispers to circulate. By lunch, the rumors were already reaching Avery’s ears.
“Have you heard what people are saying about Shawn?” Janice asked, sliding into the seat next to Avery.
Avery frowned. “No. What now?”
“Apparently, he’s still talking to someone from his old school. Some girl,” Janice said, rolling her eyes. “You know how people love to gossip.”
Avery’s stomach twisted, though she forced herself to brush it off. “It’s probably just that—gossip.”
But later that day, when Shawn seemed unusually quiet during their walk to class, the doubts began to creep in.
“Is everything okay?” Avery asked, glancing at him.
“Yeah,” Shawn said quickly, his tone distracted. “Just tired.”
“You sure?” she pressed. “You’ve seemed… distant lately.”
Shawn hesitated, his jaw tightening. “It’s nothing. Don’t worry about it.”
But his evasive answer only made Avery more uncertain.
Camila didn’t stop there. She made it a point to cross paths with Shawn whenever possible, her words carefully chosen to sow more doubt.
One afternoon, she cornered him in the library.
“Shawn,” she said sweetly, sliding into the chair across from him.
Shawn looked up, his expression wary. “What do you want, Camila?”
“Relax,” she said with a mock pout. “I just wanted to see how you’re holding up. People have been saying some… interesting things about you.”
Shawn’s eyes narrowed. “I don’t care about rumors.”
“Maybe you should,” Camila said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “You wouldn’t want Avery to get the wrong idea, would you?”
Shawn stiffened, but he didn’t respond.
Camila leaned in closer. “You know, she’s been through a lot. She deserves someone who’s completely honest with her. Someone who won’t let her down.”
“I’m not letting her down,” Shawn said, his voice sharp.
“Of course not,” Camila said with a sugary smile. “But if she ever needs someone to lean on… well, Ryan’s been awfully supportive lately.”
Shawn’s jaw clenched as he stood abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor. “Stay out of this, Camila.”
“Just trying to help,” she said with a shrug, watching him leave with a satisfied smirk.
By the end of the week, the tension between Shawn and Avery was palpable. He had grown more distant, his usual confidence replaced by a quiet frustration that Avery couldn’t ignore.
It all came to a head one afternoon when Avery turned a corner in the hallway and froze.
There, near the lockers, was Camila, standing uncomfortably close to Shawn. Her hand lingered on his arm, her voice low and smooth.
“You deserve someone who truly cares about you,” Camila said, her lips curling into a soft smile.
Shawn didn’t move, his expression unreadable.
Avery’s heart dropped. For a moment, she felt like the ground beneath her was crumbling. The scene before her confirmed every doubt that had been planted in her mind over the past week.
“Shawn?” Avery said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Both Shawn and Camila turned toward her, their expressions shifting—Shawn’s to one of guilt, Camila’s to one of triumph.
