The Rebirth of My Dead Billionaire Wife

Chapter 189

Ch. 189 / 300 Apr 25, 2026

The halls of Crestwood Academy buzzed with their usual morning chatter, but today, there was an undercurrent of excitement. Rumors had been circulating for weeks about Avery Kane Deveraux’s return. Most of the students didn’t know what to expect. The Avery they remembered was shy, quiet, and, as Ryan Hayes had often joked, “forgettable.” But the Avery walking through the front doors that morning was anything but.

She stepped inside with her head held high, her posture straight and poised. Her dark hair, once loose and unruly, was now sleek and cascading over her shoulders. Her sharp gray eyes scanned the room, catching the stares of her peers, their mouths agape.

“Is that Avery?” someone whispered from a nearby locker.

“No way. It can’t be,” another voice said.

Avery heard the murmurs but didn’t acknowledge them. She was dressed in a fitted blazer and pleated skirt, her uniform perfectly tailored. Her once-round face was now defined, her lips fuller and drawing attention every time she spoke. As she walked past, the usual cliques and whispers seemed to fade into the background. She felt their eyes on her, but instead of shrinking away as she would have before, she let them look.

Janice appeared at her side, her face lighting up with a mischievous grin. “Well, well, well. Look who’s the talk of the school now.”

Avery smirked. “Let them talk.”

“They will,” Janice said, looping her arm through Avery’s. “Trust me, you’re a headline waiting to happen.”

By lunchtime, Avery’s transformation had become the sole topic of conversation. The cafeteria, always a hub of gossip, buzzed with exaggerated versions of her story.

“Did you see her lips? They’re, like, perfect.”

“I heard she went to some exclusive spa in Europe for months. That’s why she was gone.”

“No, I heard she had a total makeover after some accident. Crazy, right?”

Avery grabbed her tray and made her way to a quiet table in the corner. Janice, ever the loyal best friend, followed close behind, glaring at anyone who dared to stare too long.

“Are you okay?” Janice asked as they sat down.

Avery shrugged. “It’s… weird. But honestly? I think I like it. I feel like I can breathe again.”

Janice grinned. “That’s the spirit. But just a heads-up, you’re going to have a parade of people pretending they were your best friend in three… two…”

“Hi, Avery!” a saccharine voice interrupted.

Avery looked up to see Chloe Hart, one of the popular girls who had ignored her for years, standing at their table. Her bright smile was too forced to be genuine.

“Oh my gosh, you look amazing!” Chloe gushed. “We should totally hang out sometime. I mean, we were in chem together last year, remember?”

Avery’s lips twitched into a polite smile. “Sure. I remember.”

“Great!” Chloe said, clearly not expecting Avery’s cool indifference. “Anyway, let’s catch up soon. Bye!”

As Chloe scurried off, Janice leaned over and whispered, “See? Headline.”

Avery chuckled softly but kept her guard up.

Across the cafeteria, Ryan Hayes sat at his usual table, surrounded by his teammates. He wasn’t paying attention to their banter, though. His eyes were locked on the girl sitting in the corner—the one who had just brushed off Chloe Hart like she was nothing.

“Who is that?” Ryan asked, his brows furrowed.

His friend Blake followed his gaze. “No idea. New girl, maybe? She’s hot, though.”

Ryan frowned. There was something familiar about her, though he couldn’t quite place it. It wasn’t just her striking appearance—it was the way she carried herself, like she had something to prove.

“She’s not new,” Ryan said slowly.

Blake shrugged. “Does it matter? You’re not going to ask her out, are you? She seems… intense.”

Ryan ignored him, his focus narrowing on the girl. There was something about her that pulled at him, like a memory just out of reach.

Later that day, Avery walked through the crowded hallway toward her locker, feeling the weight of the stares following her every move. But she didn’t falter. Every step was deliberate, every glance measured.

As she reached her locker, she felt it—that familiar sensation of being watched. She turned, her eyes scanning the sea of students, and froze.

Ryan Hayes was standing just a few feet away, leaning casually against the lockers. His posture was relaxed, but his eyes betrayed his confusion.

For a moment, time seemed to slow. Avery’s heart pounded in her chest, but she refused to let it show. She met his gaze, her gray eyes locking onto his icy blue ones.

Ryan’s expression shifted, his confident smirk faltering. Recognition flickered across his face, followed by disbelief.

“Avery?” he said, his voice low, almost uncertain.

Avery tilted her head slightly, her lips curving into a faint smile. She didn’t answer, letting the silence stretch between them.

Ryan took a step closer, his usual cocky demeanor slipping. “You… you look different.”

Avery raised an eyebrow. “Do I?”

Before Ryan could respond, the bell rang, jolting them both out of the moment. Students began to shuffle past, breaking the tension.

Ryan watched as Avery turned and walked away, her chin held high. For the first time in a long time, he felt unsettled—like the ground beneath him had shifted.

As Avery disappeared into the crowd, Ryan’s gaze lingered, his mind racing.

“What the hell happened to her?” he muttered under his breath.
