The crisp December air brought a flurry of excitement to Crestwood Academy. Snowflakes danced outside the tall windows, creating a picturesque backdrop that matched the growing buzz among students. The air practically hummed with energy as Principal Whitmore’s voice crackled over the PA system during morning announcements.
“Good morning, Crestwood students. I’m thrilled to announce that our annual Winter Ball will be held two weeks from this Friday. Formal attire is required, and tickets will go on sale this afternoon. Don’t miss out on this magical evening!”
The announcement sent a ripple of excitement through the halls. Groups of students immediately began chattering about dresses, suits, and potential dates. Avery Kane Deveraux sat quietly in her seat, flipping through her notes, pretending not to care. But Janice, ever the enthusiastic best friend, nudged her with a grin.
“So,” Janice teased. “Who’s going to be the lucky guy to take you to the ball?”
Avery rolled her eyes. “No one. I’m not really planning on going.”
“Not going?” Janice gasped in mock horror. “Are you insane? This is the event of the year. Everyone will be there!”
“Exactly,” Avery muttered, her voice low. “Everyone. Including people I’d rather avoid.”
“Come on, Aves,” Janice said, nudging her again. “You’ve got options. I mean, have you seen the way Shawn looks at you? And don’t even get me started on Ryan, your former bully.”
Avery flushed. “Shawn doesn’t look at me like that. And Ryan… he’s just my former bully.”
Janice smirked but said nothing, her gaze drifting to the classroom door where, right on cue, Shawn walked in.
The buzz of the Winter Ball announcement lingered in the air as students filed out of class and into the hallways. Avery was busy gathering her things when she heard Shawn’s familiar voice.
“Hey, Avery!”
She turned, surprised to see him standing there, his usual confident smirk in place. The hallway seemed to quiet as Shawn approached, his leather jacket slung over one shoulder, his green eyes sparkling with mischief.
“What’s up?” Avery asked, trying to sound casual.
Shawn stopped a few feet away, his voice loud enough for nearby students to hear. “I was wondering… would you go to the Winter Ball with me?”
The question hung in the air, drawing the attention of everyone within earshot. Avery’s cheeks flushed as whispers broke out around them. She could feel every pair of eyes on her, including Ryan’s, who was standing a few lockers down.
Caught off guard but flattered, Avery managed a small smile. “Are you serious?”
“Completely,” Shawn said, his tone unwavering. “What do you say?”
Avery hesitated for a moment, glancing at Janice, who was practically vibrating with excitement beside her. Then she looked back at Shawn, his expression open and genuine.
“Okay,” she said finally, her voice soft but steady. “I’ll go with you.”
Shawn’s grin widened, and a few scattered cheers broke out from nearby students. “Great,” he said. “It’s a date.”
As Shawn walked away, looking utterly satisfied, Avery felt a mix of emotions—excitement, nervousness, and the weight of so many eyes still on her. She turned to grab her books, catching a glimpse of Ryan in the corner of her vision. His jaw was tight, his fists clenched at his sides as he stared after Shawn with barely concealed jealousy.
Ryan’s mind was a storm as he walked away from the scene. He couldn’t believe what he’d just witnessed. Shawn, bold as ever, had swooped in and asked Avery to the ball—his Avery. The thought gnawed at him, stirring feelings he hadn’t fully acknowledged until now.
“Unbelievable,” he muttered under his breath as he stormed down the hallway.
Blake caught up to him, sensing his foul mood. “What’s your problem, Hayes?”
Ryan shot him a glare. “You didn’t see that? Carter asking Avery to the ball like he owns the place?”
Blake shrugged. “So what? She said yes. Maybe you should’ve asked her first.”
Ryan bristled. “He’s not doing it because he likes her. He’s got some ulterior motive, I know it.”
Blake raised an eyebrow. “Or maybe he just likes her, and you’re jealous.”
“I’m not jealous,” Ryan snapped, though his clenched fists and gritted teeth told a different story. “I’m not letting him win, that’s all.”
“Win what?” Blake asked, clearly amused. “Avery’s not some prize, man.”
Ryan ignored him, already formulating a plan in his head. Whatever Shawn was up to, he was going to find out—and stop it.
Later that afternoon, as Ryan passed by the music room, he heard Shawn’s voice. He paused, staying just out of sight, listening intently.
“This night has to go perfectly,” Shawn said, his tone unusually serious. “She has to see that I’m the right choice.”
