The Homeless Billionaire

Chapter 12

Ch. 12 / 77 Mar 12, 2026

Another woman stepped forward. "I'm a regular customer here, and Mina is not what the internet paints her to be."

"That's not the point right now," the police officer stated. "Our job is to take her into custody until her husband arrives."

The police officer scanned the customers and staff in the library, trying to see if any of them looked like the person in the picture. All of the ladies with black hair looked frightened.

"I guess she's truly gone," the police officer said, frustrated. "We have to find her."

"We found the back door wide open and saw footprints all over the floor," one of the sergeants reported.

The police officer and his colleague went to check for themselves and found that the sergeant's report was accurate.

"Find her, boys. Everyone here must follow me to the station for questioning. If you don't, I'll assume you helped her escape. Now!," he fumed as he walked towards his black sedan outside of the library, followed by his sergeants and the other people in the shop, including Vivian.

"She must not leave this town. We all need to find her," he continued, as everyone got into the police van. "Let's start by searching this neighborhood. She shouldn't be far from here."

They had to find her, or Billionaire Baron would not give them a moment's peace. Additionally, a large sum of money, worth over a million, was waiting for them if they could find her quickly.

I rushed back home and frantically locked all the doors, my heart racing with fear. I tried to calm myself, repeating in my head that I'll be safe here, that they won't find me. The long walk from the library to my home would deter them from finding me, I hoped.

I was paralyzed with fear as I watched my world crumble before me. My body shuddered as streams of shock and terror coursed through me, threatening to shatter me into a million pieces. I had just gone to return a book to the library when I heard a voice that filled me with dread. It was Vivian, and she had recognized me. My heart had sunk as I heard her speaking on the phone, calling the police.

I'd raced back into the inner room, scooped up my sleeping son in my arms, and tiptoed out of the room, making my way to the back door facing the other street.

The back door was far from the entrance, shielded by shelves so no one had seen me. I'd considered going back for my bag, but I didn't have the time. My house keys and purse had been in my denim, and that was all I'd needed.

"Oh my God, what do I do now?" I sobbed, my eyes filling with tears of fear. I leaned closer to the window ,of my house. I'd heard her give them the bookstore address, and it was only a matter of time, before they found where I lived.

Jaimie started to whimper on the bed. I walked to him, picked him up and bared my breast. He latched on. As I bounced Jaimie softly, I couldn't shake off my agitation and restlessness. How was I supposed to relax when I knew the police were on my tail, searching for me?

The thought of having to run again filled me with dread. In the two months and a week I've worked at the library, I've managed to save some money. But if I go back on the run and into the streets, I'll quickly go broke again. The notion of not being able to trust anyone, especially after what Vivian did, only added to my anxiety.

I gazed at Jaimie, now sleeping peacefully in my arms. I gently laid him back on the bed.. I tiptoed to my window and peered through the curtains, checking my surroundings. My heart froze when I saw a police car slowly cruising around the area, stopping at each house to search and ask questions. They were getting closer and closer to finding me.

"Oh my God, I need to run!" I whispered, fear gripping me tightly. I quickly shut the window and sprinted to my wardrobe. The thought of running was the only thing on my mind as I grabbed the few clothes we owned and packed them into a portable box. I didn't want to leave anything behind that could lead the police to me, so I made sure to include all my basic items.

With tears burning in my eyes, I picked up Jaimie and made my way to the back door. I cautiously opened it, scanning the area for any suspicious eyes, and tiptoed out. Luck was on my side as the coast was clear. I walked as fast as I could, with my hair covering half of my face.

Just then, I heard one of the policemen shout, "Let's check the back!"

Oh, God! My heart sank. What do I do?

Just then, my elderly neighbor opened her door and gestured for me to hurry inside. I didn't think twice and rushed into her house, holding Jaimie tightly. The woman locked the door behind us.

"You're the wife of Billionaire Baron. I knew there was something familiar about you," she said, turning to me. I frantically searched the room, thinking she might be a trap set by the police.
