The Barren Ex-Wife Gave Birth to Twins

Chapter 61

Ch. 61 / 100 May 04, 2026

The hospital room buzzed with quiet activity as Brenda’s strained cries echoed down the corridor. Ryan sat stiffly in the corner, his hands clasped tightly in his lap, the sterile smell of antiseptic thick in the air. His mind wandered to the intensive care ward, where Steve, Brenda’s first son, remained in a coma. The boy had been unresponsive for weeks, and the weight of that knowledge bore down on Ryan like a leaden cloud.

“Ryan,” Brenda whimpered, her voice pulling him back to the present. Her face was pale and glistening with sweat. “Please… stay with me. I can’t do this alone.”

He moved to her side, reluctantly taking her hand. “I’m here,” he said, though his voice lacked conviction.

The labor dragged on, Brenda alternating between cries of pain and moments of quiet desperation. Nurses came and went, their expressions calm but focused, as the doctor’s clipped instructions filled the room. Ryan felt like an outsider, an anchor in the storm of Brenda’s anguish, even as his thoughts spiraled elsewhere.

Steve. Still hooked up to machines, still trapped in the silence of his own body. Could I have done more?

Finally, after hours of strain, the sound of a baby’s cry broke through the tension. A nurse handed the newborn to Brenda, her face lighting up with a mixture of exhaustion and triumph. “Caleb,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “His name is Caleb.”

Ryan stood by the bed, watching Brenda cradle the child. Caleb’s tiny fingers curled instinctively around Brenda’s thumb, oblivious to the chaos that had surrounded his birth.

“This is your legacy, Ryan,” Brenda said, her voice soft but insistent. “Your heir. Everything you’ve built should belong to him.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened, his thoughts jumbled as he looked at the baby. There was something profoundly innocent about Caleb, and for a moment, he felt a flicker of affection. But that feeling was quickly drowned out by the reality of the situation—Brenda’s manipulations, the fragile state of her older son, and the growing distance between him and Amelia.

“You need to be here for us, for him,” Brenda continued, her tone shifting to something more demanding.

Ryan sighed heavily, stepping back. “I’ll do my part,” he said, his voice measured. “But don’t mistake that for something it’s not.”

Brenda’s expression hardened, her grip tightening on Caleb. “You don’t get to choose when to be a father, Ryan,” she snapped. “I need you to step up for both of them—Caleb and Steve.”

At the mention of Steve, guilt lanced through Ryan’s chest. He turned away, his fists clenching. “I’m choosing to be his father,” he said after a moment. “But I won’t be manipulated, Brenda. Not again.”

The nurse interrupted to adjust Brenda’s IV, the tension in the room thick enough to cut. Ryan stepped out into the hallway, the cold fluorescent lights casting harsh shadows. Leaning against the wall, he exhaled shakily, his phone buzzing in his pocket. Amelia’s name flashed on the screen.

For a long moment, Ryan stared at the phone, his thumb hovering over the screen. His heart ached with the weight of what had passed between them and the unspoken promises he still wanted to keep. But the sound of Caleb’s cries from the room behind him pulled him back, the reality of his responsibilities rooting him in place.

Ryan slipped his phone back into his pocket and walked toward the neonatal ward. With every step, the image of Steve lying motionless in his hospital bed flashed in his mind. As he reached Caleb’s nursery window, he placed a hand against the glass, his reflection staring back at him.

“Two sons,” he murmured to himself. “And neither of them deserves the mess I’ve made.”
