Ryan sat in the sterile hospital room, his face etched with tension. Brenda lay on the bed, pale and trembling. Her pregnancy had become increasingly complicated, and now the stakes were higher than ever.
“The baby’s heartbeat is irregular,” the doctor explained. “We’ll need to monitor her closely, and Brenda should avoid all stress.”
Ryan nodded, guilt clawing at him. He had spent so much time away, chasing shadows with Amelia, that he’d barely noticed Brenda’s condition worsening. “I’ll take care of her,” he said, his voice heavy.
When the doctor left, Brenda turned to him, her eyes glossy with unshed tears. “You can’t leave us, Ryan. Not now.” Her hand moved protectively over her stomach. “This baby needs you.”
Ryan clenched his jaw, his thoughts warring within him. His responsibilities to Brenda and the unborn child felt like chains tightening around him. Yet, his mind kept drifting to Amelia and the twins—the family he had always wanted, the family he had betrayed. “I’m here,” he said finally, though the words tasted hollow.
Meanwhile, at Amelia’s house, the twins were unusually quiet. Damien sat by the window, staring out into the darkened street, while Debby rested on the couch, still recovering from her ordeal. Amelia moved between them, her worry like a second skin.
“Mom?” Damien asked, breaking the silence. “Why doesn’t Dad live with us anymore?”
Amelia froze, the question piercing her. She knelt beside Damien, brushing a hand through his hair. “It’s... complicated,” she said gently. “But your dad loves you. Don’t ever doubt that.”
Later that night, Amelia scrolled through her messages, her thumb hovering over Ryan’s unread text: I’ll be late. Brenda needs me.
Her frustration flared. He made his choice, she thought bitterly. Over and over again, he chose Brenda.
At the hospital, Brenda seized the opportunity to twist the knife. “Do you think Amelia would have stood by you like this? Through everything?” she asked, her voice dripping with venom. “She’s the reason you’re stretched so thin, Ryan. She’s the reason you’re not with me and this baby where you belong.”
Ryan didn’t respond, his gaze fixed on the floor. The weight of his choices hung heavy over him, pressing down like an invisible force.
Back at Amelia’s house, the phone rang sharply, cutting through the quiet. She answered cautiously. “Hello?”
There was no response at first, only the faint sound of breathing. Then, a distorted voice spoke: “You can’t protect them forever.”
Amelia’s blood ran cold, her grip tightening on the phone. She raced to check the locks on the doors and windows, her heart pounding. She peeked through the curtains but saw nothing—only the empty street.
