The Barren Ex-Wife Gave Birth to Twins

Chapter 90

Ch. 90 / 100 May 04, 2026

The charity gala buzzed with elegance and opulence. Crystal chandeliers bathed the ballroom in a golden glow, and the air hummed with soft music and polite laughter. Amelia stepped inside, her crimson gown flowing like liquid silk, drawing appreciative glances. Hale, dressed in a sleek black tuxedo, greeted her with a glass of champagne, his charm as polished as ever.

“You look breathtaking,” Hale said, his voice low as his gaze swept over her. “I might have to keep you on my arm all night just to keep everyone else away.”

Amelia laughed lightly, though her heart wasn’t fully in it. “I don’t think I’ll be the center of attention in a room like this.”

“Trust me,” Hale replied, leaning closer. “You outshine them all.”

As the evening wore on, Amelia found herself drawn into conversations with donors and community leaders, all of whom seemed captivated by Hale’s charisma. But as she sipped her drink and politely nodded, her attention snagged on a familiar figure across the room.

Ryan stood near the entrance, dressed impeccably in a tailored suit. Beside him, Brenda clung to his arm, her gold gown shimmering like a trophy. They moved through the crowd with practiced ease, Brenda smiling and waving like a queen greeting her subjects. But Ryan’s expression was distant, his jaw tight as if he’d rather be anywhere else.

Amelia’s chest tightened, an ache settling deep in her ribs. Hale noticed the change in her demeanor almost immediately.

“Ah,” he said, his voice cool as he followed her gaze. “There’s the ghost.”

She blinked, turning to him. “What?”

“Ryan,” Hale said simply, his lips curling into a smirk. “He’s haunting you, isn’t he? Even when he’s not trying.”

Amelia stiffened, unsure how to respond. Before she could find the words, Hale leaned closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. “You see him with her, and it hurts, doesn’t it? But look at him, Amelia. That’s not happiness. That’s a man drowning in his own choices.”

Her eyes darted back to Ryan. He smiled politely at someone who had approached him, but the strain in his expression was unmistakable. Brenda, however, was radiant, her laughter bright and carefree as she soaked up the attention.

“Don’t let him consume you,” Hale continued, his tone gentle but insistent. “You deserve better than to be caught in his orbit. He’s not your problem anymore.”

Amelia felt the words hit her like a cold wave, cutting through the haze of her emotions. She set her glass down and murmured, “I need some air.”

Hale reached for her arm, his touch firm but not overbearing. “Do you want me to come with you?”

“No,” she said quickly, forcing a smile. “I just need a moment.”

Outside, the cool night air stung her cheeks as she stepped onto the terrace. The city lights stretched out before her, glittering and alive, but they did little to soothe the turmoil inside her.

“Amelia!”

She froze, her heart lurching at the sound of Ryan’s voice.

“Wait,” he called, his footsteps quick as he approached.

She didn’t turn, her fists clenching at her sides as she struggled to maintain her composure. But as his voice grew closer, something inside her wavered.

“Amelia,” he said again, his tone softer now, almost pleading.

She turned slightly, just enough to catch a glimpse of him, and saw the same vulnerability in his eyes that had always been her undoing. Her breath hitched, but before he could say anything more, she shook her head and walked away, leaving him standing alone under the vast expanse of the night sky.
