The sun streamed through the café window, bathing the room in golden light. James sat at a corner table, glancing at his watch as he stirred his coffee absentmindedly. His nerves hummed, but when Amelia stepped through the door, a warm smile replaced his tension.
“Amelia,” he said, standing to greet her. His voice carried a mix of relief and surprise.
“Hi, James.” She returned his smile, albeit hesitantly, as she took a seat across from him. Her hands fidgeted on the table before reaching for her cup.
James noticed the movement, leaning forward slightly. “You look well,” he said, his tone genuine.
Amelia laughed softly, a hint of self-deprecation in the sound. “You’re kind to say that, but it’s been… a lot lately.”
“I figured,” he said, his voice softening. “You’ve had a lot on your plate. I was starting to think I’d done something wrong.”
Amelia’s expression shifted to one of guilt and tenderness. “James, no. You’ve been wonderful—more than wonderful. I let everything else in my life get in the way, and that’s on me.” She paused, taking a deep breath. “I’ve missed talking to you. You make things feel easier, lighter.”
James smiled, his heart lifting at her words. “That’s all I want, Amelia—to make things a little easier for you.”
Amelia met his gaze, and the sincerity in his eyes made her throat tighten. “You’ve done that, more than you know. I just—I want us to find a way forward, without all the noise.”
James nodded, his hand brushing hers lightly. “If we can take things slow, I think we can get there.”
Amelia’s lips curved into a small, grateful smile. “Thank you, James. For your patience, for everything.”
They lingered a little longer, the conversation easing into lighter topics. James shared an anecdote about one of his students, his laughter infectious. For the first time in weeks, Amelia felt a moment of genuine happiness.
When they parted, James walked her to her car. “I’ll see you soon,” he said, his smile filled with hope.
