The Barren Ex-Wife Gave Birth to Twins

Chapter 72

Ch. 72 / 100 May 04, 2026

The hospital room was dimly lit, the rhythmic beeping of monitors filling the space as Brenda sat by Steve’s bedside. Her fingers clutched his hand, her usually immaculate appearance frayed at the edges. She barely noticed Ryan entering the room, his expression tight with concern.

“How is he?” Ryan asked softly, standing at the foot of the bed.

Brenda turned to him, her eyes red-rimmed but sharp. “Still the same,” she whispered. “I’ve been praying, Ryan. Every second, I’ve been praying for him to come back.”

Ryan nodded, his gaze falling to Steve’s pale face. The boy—no, young man—he had once carried on his shoulders during park visits looked fragile, his chest rising and falling with shallow breaths. Memories flooded Ryan’s mind: Steve’s laugh when he taught him to ride a bike, the serious way he’d talk about dinosaurs at age seven, and how he’d fall asleep clutching his favorite action figure.

Suddenly, a faint sound broke through the quiet—Steve’s hoarse whisper.

“Mom?”

Brenda gasped, her grip tightening around Steve’s hand. “Steve! Baby, I’m here!” Tears streamed down her face as she leaned forward.

Ryan froze, his breath catching as Steve’s eyes fluttered open. They were unfocused but alive. “Dad?” he croaked, his voice weak.

Ryan moved closer, his chest tightening. “I’m here, Steve. We’re both here.”

Brenda sobbed openly, her body trembling. She reached out, pulling Ryan into a hug, her tears soaking into his shirt. “He’s back, Ryan,” she cried. “Our boy is back.”

Ryan hesitated, his arms hovering awkwardly before settling around her. The weight of her grief and relief was palpable, and for a moment, he couldn’t push her away. His own emotions warred within him. He wasn’t her partner anymore, but he had been Steve’s father in every way that mattered.

Steve’s eyes roamed the room, his expression muddled with confusion and exhaustion. “What… what happened?”

Ryan knelt beside him, his voice steady despite the storm inside him. “You’ve been sick, Steve. But you’re awake now, and that’s all that matters.”

Brenda’s hand clutched Ryan’s arm tightly, and he didn’t have the heart to pull away. He glanced at her tear-streaked face, a flicker of pity surfacing. Whatever Brenda had done, this moment was about Steve.

As the nurses entered to check on Steve, Brenda clung to Ryan like a lifeline. He allowed it, feeling the weight of his past and the tangled emotions that came with it. For now, he focused on Steve, pushing his conflicted feelings aside.
