Amelia stood in the kitchen, absently stirring a pot of soup as the twins chatted at the table. Their voices were lively, but her mind wandered. Memories of the night with Ryan flickered in her thoughts, followed by the crushing sting of his abrupt departure to Brenda. It felt like a cruel cycle she couldn’t escape—a tether she didn’t want yet couldn’t sever.
“Mom?” Damien’s voice broke through her reverie. She turned to see him frowning, his head tilted with concern. “Are you and Dad fighting again?”
Her stomach twisted. How much had they picked up on? She forced a smile, kneeling beside him. “No, sweetie. Everything’s fine.”
Debby, clutching her stuffed bunny, looked up with wide eyes. “Then why do you look sad, Mommy?”
Amelia swallowed hard, the weight of her emotions threatening to spill over. “Sometimes grown-ups just have a lot on their minds,” she said softly. “But you don’t need to worry about that.”
After tucking the twins in that night, Amelia retreated to her study, the small room offering a sanctuary. She stared at her laptop, trying to lose herself in work, but the numbers on the screen blurred. Her chest felt heavy with the familiar ache of confusion and longing.
A knock at the door startled her. She opened it to find James standing there, his kind eyes full of quiet concern. “Hey,” he said, holding a bag of takeout. “I thought you might not have eaten yet.”
Amelia stepped aside, allowing him in, but kept her arms crossed. She watched as he unpacked containers of her favorite Thai food. “You didn’t have to do this,” she murmured.
“I know,” James said simply, setting the food down. “But you’ve been... distant. I’m here if you want to talk.”
Her defenses went up instantly. “I just need some space, James. I’m trying to figure things out.”
He studied her for a moment, then nodded. “I understand. But don’t shut out the people who care about you, Amelia.” His voice was steady, but there was a flicker of hurt in his eyes.
After he left, Amelia sank into her chair, guilt gnawing at her. The twins’ questions, James’s kindness, and Ryan’s ever-present shadow left her feeling like she was spiraling. She vowed to focus on the one thing that mattered most: her children. But deep down, she wondered how long she could keep running from her own heart.
