The Alpha's Mate Who Cried Wolf

Chapter 24

Ch. 24 / 181 Nov 11, 2025

I follow him outside, and together, we explore the garden that surrounds us. The moonlight bathes the landscape in a soft, silvery glow, revealing abundant rose bushes and many other stunning flowers.

Ryker signals me to sit amidst the garden bed, and we quietly watch, waiting for something special. Puzzled, I sit beside him, scanning the area for any clues. 'What are we looking for?' I whisper.

'You'll see any moment now,' he replies.

Suddenly, a magical spectacle unfolds before our eyes: fireflies emerge, landing gracefully on the various flowers, illuminating the garden with their tiny, glowing lights.

I gasp in awe at the breathtaking display. 'I never thought bugs could be so beautiful until now,' I whisper to Ryker, my voice filled with wonder.

Ryker smiles warmly, his gaze fixed on the mesmerizing sight. 'There is beauty in everything; you just have to sometimes look at it in a different light,' he muses softly.

We sit silently, captivated by the fireflies as they continue dancing around before moving on to other flowers. When they depart, we rise to our feet, facing each other with only inches separating us. I place my hand gently on Ryker's chest, my eyes reflecting the same sparkling wonder as the fireflies.

'Thank you so much for sharing that with me. I've never experienced such an enchanting moment,' I sincerely express my gratitude to him.

Ryker covers my hand with his own. His eyes lock onto mine. 'I hope I can share many more wonders with you,' he says, his gaze dipping to my lips.

'I'd like that,' I reply, a genuine smile gracing my lips as my heart flutters.

Ryker nods, still holding my hand, and leads me to a large open grass area before the woods. He turns to me and speaks earnestly, 'I need you to trust me, Astrid. I will shift into my wolf, and you will keep your eyes closed while you pat me, okay?'

My nerves creep in, but as I gaze into Ryker's eyes, I know I can trust him. I nod, sit down, and obediently close my eyes. I hear the sounds of Ryker's transformation, and when I feel him before me, I hesitantly reach out and touch his fur.

Although trembling, I tenderly pat his wolf form, feeling the warmth and strength of his furry body. Unexpectedly, flashbacks of my mother's last moments flood my mind, and tears roll down my cheeks. Ryker whimpers softly, comforting me, assuring me that everything is okay. His fur is incredibly soft. I embrace the creature before me, running my hands through his soft fur and rubbing my face against it. It's soothing and comforting, and I can't help but giggle when Ryker playfully rubs his wet nose on my cheek.

'Ryker,' I laugh, wrapping my arms around his neck and pulling him closer, relishing the warm embrace of his furry form. 'I'm going to try and open my eyes. I want to see what you look like,' I tell him.

Nervously, I gradually open my eyes, allowing the moonlight to adjust my vision. What I see takes my breath away. Ryker's wolf form is truly impressive, his coat a glistening midnight black. His proud and regal aura fills me with a sense of awe and admiration.

Ryker's wolf nudges his face affectionately against mine, and I hold onto his fur, feeling the warmth and the sparks it ignites within me. Tears continue to trickle down my cheek, and I whisper my gratitude to him. In response, Ryker lets out a gentle whimper and affectionately licks my cheek with his large, wet tongue.

I laugh heartily and playfully scold him, 'Ryker! That's so gross!' Pushing him away, I stand and start running, inviting him to chase me. The forest around us becomes a blur as I dash through the trees, my long brown hair flowing like a ribbon behind me. Laughter fills the air as I revel in the exhilarating thrill of the chase. I zigzag through the trees, occasionally glancing over my shoulder to see Ryker hot on my heels.

Finally, I purposely fall to the forest floor, breathless from the excitement. Ryker gently nudges my shoulder and licks my other cheek, causing me to burst into giggles. Playfully, I push his chest with my hand, and he lowers himself to the ground, his eager gaze fixed on me.

Surprised, I ask, 'You want me to hop on your back?' Ryker moves closer in response, and I decide to give it a try. With a bit of hesitation, I climb onto his broad back. Once I'm settled, Ryker takes off, running deeper into the woods.

The sensation is incredible, and I can't help but smile as the wind rushes past my face, my arms outstretched to embrace the freedom and exhilaration of the moment. Adrenaline courses through my body as Ryker runs faster, and together, we bound through the moonlit forest.

Suddenly, something catches my attention out of the corner of my eye, and it races towards us with lightning speed. 'Ryker,' I urgently call out, but before I can finish my sentence, I'm knocked forcefully from Ryker's back, causing me to roll along the ground and slam into a tree.

My head spins, and I spit leaves from my mouth as I gather my bearings. The air is filled with growls and snarls, the unmistakable sounds of a fight. I look up from where I lie to witness a scruffy, small brown wolf aggressively snapping at Ryker with a grey patch on its fur. My attempt to stand is futile; everything spins, and I lean against the tree, settling myself down before I fall.

Ryker and the unknown wolf circle each other, teeth bared and snarling menacingly. Ryker shifts into his human form, standing completely naked with his back to me. 'Shift,' he commands sternly to the brown wolf.

The ragged brown wolf shifts into a woman's form, standing naked but facing Ryker. From my vantage point, she appears pretty with long blonde hair, brown eyes, and a much larger bust than mine. I feel an inexplicable surge of jealousy and anger and, to my astonishment, let out a low growl that reverberates through my chest. Did I just growl like a wolf?
