The Alpha's Mate Who Cried Wolf

Chapter 14

Ch. 14 / 181 Nov 11, 2025

I'm overwhelmed with a whirlwind of emotions, a complex mix of anger, fear, and desire. The feelings of fear and trauma from the wolf are intermingled with an unexpected longing for Ryker's touch. I find myself nestled in his arms, and despite my anger, there's an undeniable sense of comfort, security, and even affection that I haven't felt in years. My emotions are a tangled mess, leaving me utterly confused about why I don't want to move from Ryker's endearing embrace. I can't bring myself to respond to him. I'm still trembling from the shock of what I've witnessed, and my mind keeps flashing back to that haunting day in the woods with my mother and the menacing wolf.

Jim eventually returns to the dining area, now fully dressed. He gazes at me somberly, but I can't bring myself to make eye contact with him. He respects my need for space, staying distant and maintaining his solemn demeanour in the opposite corner.

An entire hour passes as everyone watches on in heart-wrenching silence. My cries have transformed into heavy sobs, and the memories of my mother's tragic death keep replaying in my mind like a never-ending nightmare. No one dares to utter a word as my tears fall, and the atmosphere is thick with misery and sympathy. Even Ryker, who has been holding me this entire time, remains silent. My grip on his shirt tightens as I bury my face into his chest and close my eyes.

I slowly stir, consciousness returning as I find myself still cradled in Ryker's arms. I gaze up at him, and his eyes show a profound sadness as he speaks softly. 'Astrid, there's more I need to explain to you, but I think it can wait until tomorrow,' he says, his voice gentle.

I nod, my mind still swirling with confusion and exhaustion. Glancing at the clock, I gasp as I realize how late it is. Panic courses through me as I abruptly sit up and untangle myself from Ryker's embrace. 'It's late! I should have been home ages ago!' I exclaim, frantically pushing myself off him, and run towards the door.

My trembling hands reach for the doorknob, but to my horror, it won't budge. I rattle it forcefully, desperation in my voice. 'Where's the key?' I shout franticly.

Ryker calmly approaches his hand, landing gently on my arm. 'Astrid, you're not going anywhere yet, and you sure as hell are never going back to that house,' he declares, determined with his decision.

Fear courses through my veins as my lips part in worry. 'But you said you would unlock the door when I was ready to leave! Please, you have to let me go! He will kill me if I'm late again!' I plead, trying to force the door open.

'Astrid, I will not allow him to lay a finger on you ever again! Do you hear me?' Ryker's voice is firm as he crosses his arms.

I pivot around to face him, my glare piercing. 'He will hunt me down, Ryker. He will kill me if I don't go home, and he will come here looking for me,' I warn urgently.

Ryker's smile is strangely confident. 'Good! Let him come! Because it's the last time he will ever see you again,' he asserts boldly.

My shoulders slump with worry. 'What are you going to do to him? You can't. You can't kill him, Ryker!' Panic creeps into my voice.

'Why not!? If I kill him now, you will never have to fear him again!' he argues, conviction burning in his eyes.

My voice trembles as I respond, 'I know he has hurt me a lot, Ryker, but my mother loved him! I am already the cause of her death! I don't want to be the reason the man she loved died too,' I confess, my gaze downcast.

Ryker reaches out, his touch gentle as he lifts my chin to make me look at him. 'I think you should tell me what happened that day. The day your mother died, Astrid,' he suggests, his eyes searching mine.

I shake my head, tears welling up. 'The only person I ever told was my stepfather. I don't want to repeat it,' I reply, avoiding his gaze.

Ryker sighs with a touch of understanding in his expression. 'Maybe one day, in time, you will tell me?' He suggests softly.

I nod, my gaze finally returning to the locked door handle. But before I can dwell on my predicament further, the phone in the diner rings, jolting me from my thoughts.

Jim, Ryker, Seth, and I exchange knowing glances as the phone rings, a silent acknowledgement that it's most likely my stepfather on the other end, wondering why I haven't returned home yet. Ryker nods at Jim, signalling for him to answer.

Jim picks up the phone. 'Yes, this is Jim's Diner. How may I help you?' He inquires politely. After a brief pause, his tone shifts, growing more assertive. 'Yes, Astrid is here... No, she won't be coming to the phone, and no, she won't be returning home. Let me repeat myself. I don't think you got the message clear enough. Astrid is not going back to your house ever again... Oh, really? Well, my friends and I look forward to your arrival,' he concludes sharply, slamming the phone down.

Jim stares at the phone with anger and sadness, then turns his gaze towards Ryker and me. Frightened, I instinctively step back and partially hide behind Ryker. Jim's expression shifts from anger to sorrow, and he makes eye contact with Ryker. 'He says he is on his way with his shotgun to come and collect Astrid,' Jim informs us.

My eyes widen in fear, and I plead with Ryker, my voice trembling. 'Ryker, I don't want anyone to get hurt. Just let me go back with him,' I beg.

Ryker's response is firm. 'No, we all know he's going to hurt you the moment you get home, or worse, kill you,' he states assertively.

Determined to stand my ground, I argue, 'Whatever happens to me isn't your problem, Ryker! I can look after myself!'

Ryker's low growl reverberates through the room. 'Well, you're clearly not doing a very good job of looking after yourself, and you are my problem because you are my mate!' He sternly declares.
