The Alpha's Mate Who Cried Wolf

Chapter 38

Ch. 38 / 181 Nov 11, 2025

'Alpha, you look awfully tired. May I suggest you rest for the night?' Alice kindly suggests in a gentle tone.

I nod in agreement, feeling the weariness weighing down my limbs. Rising from my seat, I slowly make my way to my room. Yet, as I step inside my bedroom, the swaying and blurring of my vision intensify. Panic grips me, and I reach out, grasping onto the armchair for support, forcing myself to sit down.

With my shoes kicked off, I wait in the dimly lit room, willing the disorienting sensation to subside. The creak of my door catches my attention, and my heart quickens. I squint at the shadowy figure that enters, struggling to discern their identity.

'Is someone there?' I ask, my voice betra ying the tension I feel.

'It's me!' a voice responds, carrying a hint of uncertainty.

'Astrid? Is that you?' I ask, attempting to rise from my seat. But as a gentle hand rests against my chest, I lose my balance and stumble.

'Sit back down, Ryker. I'm here now. I'll take care of you,' she whispers, straddling herself onto my lap. Her presence is a surreal mix of surprise and relief.

'Astrid, you came back?' I breathe, my voice trembling with emotion.

'Of course I did,' she reassures me, her fingers deftly working on unbuttoning my shirt.

'Why did you leave? Where did you go?' I ask, torn between curiosity and concern.

'We can talk about that another day. Right now, all that matters is that I'm here with you,' she responds, her hands gliding over my bare chest. One hand ventures lower, deftly undoing my belt buckle and pants.

Her lips brush against mine, and she whispers my name seductively and longingly. 'Ryker,' she murmurs as she guides my hands to rest on her thighs.

'Astrid,' I reply, my desire for her visible.

'I want you to mark me, Ryker,' she breathes into my ear, sending shivers down my spine.

The desire intensifies with every passing moment.

The room spins and sways around us, but my thoughts are consumed by the overwhelming desire to make love to Astrid, to mark her and claim her as mine.

'I'm going to mark you first,' she whispers in my ear, her teeth elongating as she glides down my neck, searching for my marking spot. The anticipation builds, and I feel the pressure of her fangs about to puncture my skin.

But then reality crashes in. Something doesn't add up. Astrid can't shift yet, and she wouldn't be capable of marking me. The familiar heat and the subtle sparks from the bond that define our connection are conspicuously absent. Realization dawns on me, and I react swiftly, pushing her away just as her teeth are poised to pierce my neck.

'Alpha! What's wrong?' She asks, her voice filled with confusion.

'Vanessa? Is that you?' I ask, struggling to adjust my eyes and squinting in the dim light.

'No, it's me, Astrid!' She replies nervously, her voice trembling.

I attempt to regain my composure. My head spins with dizziness as I make an effort to stand.

'Astrid hasn't had her first shift yet! She can't mark me, even if she wanted to!' I state in anger as my strength fails me, and I collapse to the ground, overwhelmed by the disorienting sensation Vanessa has inflicted upon me.

'What have you done to me?' I ask with unmistakable fury.

‘Ryker, please! Astrid is not coming back! I'm doing you and the pack a favour!’ Vanessa pleads desperately.

Desperation claws at me as I struggle to maintain contact with Leon and Kane through our mind-link. Each futile attempt deepens my frustration and confusion, amplifying my sense of helplessness. 'Did you poison me, Vanessa?' I ask with a potent mix of anger and suspicion.

Vanessa's response is hesitant, her nervousness evident in her darting eyes and faltering words. I muster every ounce of my strength, determined to reach safety, as I drag myself laboriously toward the door. My vision blurs and swims, but I know that losing consciousness now would be perilous. I inch closer to the door in hope until darkness engulfs me, claiming my senses.

Somewhere between the murky haze of consciousness and unconsciousness, I become aware of Vanessa's voice engaged in a heated argument with Alice. 'He's too heavy, Mother! We can't even roll him over!' Vanessa growls in frustration, her voice punctuating the tension in the room.

I squint, struggling to adapt my eyes to the dim surroundings, but to my disoriented dismay, I remain immobilized. The room remains shrouded in darkness.

My head pounds relentlessly, and waves of nausea threaten to overwhelm me. Summoning every ounce of strength, I reach out through the mind link to Leon and Kane, my vision slowly clearing as I become more cognizant of my dire situation.

'Quick, do it now, Vanessa, while you still can!' Alice's voice pierces through the thickening atmosphere as she pushes Vanessa toward me with a sense of urgency.

Vanessa straddles me, her elongated teeth closing in on my neck. Panic surges through me, and I desperately struggle to push her away. But before I can mount any meaningful defense, Alice delivers a savage blow to my head with a heavy object. Pain erupts within me, searing and all-encompassing, even as I can feel Vanessa's teeth inching closer to piercing my skin.

Suddenly, Leon and Kane burst into the room and pull Vanessa away from me.

'Alpha! Are you okay?' Kane asks with concern as he assesses my condition.

'They drugged me. Vanessa almost marked me,' I gasp, my voice shaky and breathless from the harrowing ordeal.

Alice, unrepentant and defiant, continues to harbor her dark intentions. 'You've waited far too long for your Luna! Vanessa would be a more fitting Luna than that wretched little brat, Astrid!' She taunts with animosity.

Summoning my dwindling reservoir of strength, I rise to my feet, leaning heavily against the wall for support. My head continues to throb relentlessly, making it difficult to think clearly. 'Bring Alice to me now, Leon!' I command with a resolute tone.
