Running down a corridor, I eventually reach the front door. Without thinking, I fling it open and dart outside, my footsteps pounding against the ground as I sprint away, driven by fear and uncertainty, with no destination in mind.
Wandering through the winding roads of Shadow Crest, I'm struck by the town's captivating beauty, nestled amidst a verdant forest that envelopes it like a hidden gem in the heart of nature. Towering trees loom on all sides along the path I tread, filled with birds singing and chirping.
Ahead, a small shopping strip beckons, its charm undeniable. I stroll past a quaint café with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the air and a row of inviting clothing stores displaying their vibrant wares. There are plenty of people around, most likely werewolves, and I feel a lot of unwanted stares at me. Further along, a watchtower emerges on the horizon. I decide that’s where I will go.
I embark on what feels like an endless climb, ascending hundreds of steps until I finally reach the summit. The amazing view of Shadow Crest unfurls before me, a breathtaking sight that leaves me in awe. The thick forest envelops the town in a sea of green, stretching as far as the eye can see, offering no clue as to which way is which.
With a sense of defeat, I lower myself to the ground and dangle my legs over the ledge, resting my head on the cold metal rail. Despair sets in, and my mind races with unsettling thoughts.
What am I going to do? The looming prospect of turning into a werewolf terrifies me, yet I can't escape the inevitability of my fate. My thoughts drift back to last night, to the moment when my stepfather shot Ryker. My heart hurts at the thought of almost losing him, even though I barely know him.
As I sit there, lost in my thoughts, I suddenly sense a presence behind me. A heavy sigh announces Ryker's arrival as he casually settles beside me, letting his legs dangle over the ledge like mine do.
'Ryker,' I say, turning to him. 'I'm sorry I ran off. I just panicked and didn't know what to do,' I explain, my voice laced with regret.
He turns to me, his eyes calm and reassuring. 'Do you want to talk about it?' he offers gently.
I nod, my fears pressing upon me. 'How am I supposed to come to terms with the fact that I'm going to shift into a wolf? Shifting into something I've greatly feared since I was seven years old. I don't want to meet my wolf, Ryker. I don't want to shift,' I confess solemnly, my vulnerability laying bare before him.
Ryker responds by draping his arm around me, drawing me closer. His nose grazes along my neck, sending unexpected shivers coursing through my body. 'Astrid,' he whispers, his hot breath on my nape adding to the allure of the moment. 'I want to help you conquer your fear of wolves, and I'll be right there with you during your first shift. I'll guide you through it, Astrid. I won't lie; the first time will be painful, but after that, it won't hurt,' he says gently, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear.
I simply nod and rest my head against his shoulder, finding comfort in his presence and promises.
'When you're ready,' he says softly, 'we can go to the shopping strip. I'd like you to meet some people and buy you clothes of your own.'
‘Okay. I do feel a little calmer. We can go now if you want?’ I say to him.
Ryker holds my hand as we descend the steps and walk along the road to the shopping strip. ‘Let's go to Medley's clothing store,’ he says, opening the door.
‘Welcome to Medley's clothing store. How can I help you? Oh, Alpha Ryker!’ the woman says, bowing her head down.
Ryker nods at her. 'Medley,' he greets, and she raises her gaze to meet mine with a warm smile. 'And who do we have here?' she asks.
'Astrid,' Ryker introduces me, his eyes gleaming with pride. 'I'd like you to meet Medley; she's the owner of this store and will help you find some clothing,' he says with a smile, then turns to Medley. 'This is your Luna, Astrid.'
Medley's eyes widen in surprise. 'Luna!' she exclaims, bowing her head again before addressing Ryker. 'I had no idea you found your mate. How did Alice and her daughter Vanessa react to this news?' she inquires, her curiosity piqued.
I glance at Ryker, bewildered by the mention of Vanessa. Ryker, sensing my confusion, responds with a hint of nervousness. 'Alice found out this morning. So, she will probably inform Vanessa today that the agreement has ended.'
Medley seems satisfied with the answer. 'Well, with that settled,' she says, returning her attention to me. 'Luna, if you'd like to come this way with me into the fitting rooms to try on some clothes,' she offers.
I nod and start to follow her, but then turn to Ryker. 'Who is Vanessa?' I ask, needing to understand the situation better.
Ryker hesitates for a moment before opening up. 'I was going to tell you about her tonight. Vanessa is a member of this pack. We're friends, but she has developed a bit of a crush on me,' he confesses. 'But please don't worry yourself over it,' he reassures me.
'Is that why Alice wasn't happy this morning?' I inquire.
Ryker nods. 'Yes, and as you now know, Vanessa is her daughter. Everyone in Shadow Crest knows she desperately wants to be my mate and the Luna of this pack,' he continues, revealing the complex dynamics of the situation.
Stunned by this revelation, I finally manage to speak. 'She doesn't have a fated mate?' I ask, seeking further clarification.
Ryker shakes his head. 'Vanessa's mate was killed two years ago in her old pack, Shady Crest. Not long after, she left her pack, claiming they had turned abusive toward her, and she became the pack slave. Her mother, Alice, and she decided to escape, eventually finding themselves here. After a while, she confessed to having feelings for me,' he explains.
Understanding the situation, I accept Ryker's explanation and proceed to the fitting room, where Medley has a plethora of outfits ready for me to try on.
Medley passes me two elegant dresses, and I eye them with a furrowed brow. 'Do you have anything more casual?' I inquire.
'You're a Luna, Astrid, and most Luna's would wear this type of attire,' she insists.
I shake my head firmly. 'I haven't agreed to be anyone's Luna, so until then, I'd just like normal clothes like everyone else, please,' I assert.
