The Alpha's Mate Who Cried Wolf

Chapter 17

Ch. 17 / 181 Nov 11, 2025

Minutes later, Seth approaches us, his expression solemn. 'Luna, we've removed the silver bullet, but he isn't healing as he should be. I'm not sure why, and if he doesn't start healing soon, he will...' Seth's words trail off.

'No!' I exclaim desperately. 'Ryker can't die, Seth! I can't bear to lose someone else because of me.' Overwhelmed by fear and sorrow, I push past Seth to be by Ryker's side, determined to do whatever it takes to save him.

The pack members lower their heads, giving me some space with Ryker. Tears stream down my face as I lay my head on his chest. 'Ryker, please! I'm sorry. Please don't die. It's all my fault. Please wake up!' I plead, my voice trembling with desperation.

Ryker's breathing is faint, and the intense closeness sends lustful emotions through my body. I gently place my hand over his wound, my fingers trembling. 'Please, Ryker,' I beg in a whisper. 'I promise I'll come home with you if you wake up.'

There is no immediate response, and I gaze at him with tear-filled eyes. Finally, I wrap my arms around him, pressing my head against his chest, seeking any sign of life.

Minutes pass in agonizing silence, and then, suddenly, I feel warm tingles down my back, sending a rush of sparks throughout my body. 'Astrid, none of this is your fault,' Ryker's voice whispers, his hand caressing my back.

Startled, I sit up abruptly, and the pack members rush closer to see that Ryker has awakened. My eyes lock on the spot where the bullet had pierced his chest, and I run my finger over the now-closed wound, which has left only a tiny scar. For a fleeting moment, Ryker's eyes turn a deep ebony, and I swear I hear the faintest growl of desire.

'Your wound. It's healed,' I say in disbelief, my voice quivering.

Ryker takes my hand and brings it to his lips, kissing it gently. 'It was you, Astrid, the mate bond. If you weren't here, I probably would have died,' he says warmly.

Frowning, I reply, 'Actually, if I weren't here, you wouldn't have gotten shot in the first place.'

Ryker sits up, pulls me into his chest, and wraps his arms gently around me. He nuzzles his face into my neck and sweetly whispers, ‘It's going to take more than a bullet to keep me away from you.’

My entire body melts from his words, and I strangely yet affectionately rub my face against his cheek.

In the midst of the intimate moment, I suddenly realize the depth of my actions and quickly push myself away from Ryker, my cheeks flushing with embarrassment.

Ryker smiles knowingly. 'That's the mate bond,' he chuckles, his eyes filled with warmth.

Feeling self-conscious, I cross my arms and shoot him a glare, which only prompts laughter from everyone around us. Seth, in particular, finds our interactions amusing.

Seth shakes his head, still amused. 'You two definitely make an interesting couple,' he laughs.

I give Seth an incredulous glance. 'We aren't a couple,' I retort defensively.

The laughter dies down, and a heavy silence falls over the diner. I can see the disappointment in Ryker's expression, and Seth's smile fades into a troubled frown, mirroring the reactions of everyone else in the room. They glance at Ryker with pity and sympathy, and the awkward change of atmosphere feels suffocating.

Unable to bear the tense air, I abruptly leave the diner. I sense that one of the pack members is following me, but I have no intention of running away. Instead, I walk over to where my stepfather lies unconscious. His body is covered in blood, and his breathing is shallow. It’s clear he won’t be waking up anytime soon.

I notice that it's Seth who has followed me. I step away from my stepfather and find a grassy area where I lie on my back, gazing up at the stars and the moon as they glow.

Meanwhile, Ryker stands at the window of the diner, his expression glum as he listens to the conversations happening inside, likely revolving around my declaration.

I tilt my head towards Seth, genuine regret in my eyes. 'Seth, I'm sorry if I upset you, Alpha Ryker, and the others,' I tell him sincerely.

Seth lets out a weary sigh. 'We must remember that this is all new to you, Luna. You haven't even turned eighteen yet. I believe that once you've settled into Shadow Crest and adjusted to how we werewolves live, everything will fall into place for you,' he reassures me.

I shake my head and sit up, and my voice fills with sadness. 'This isn't the life I wanted. It's nothing like what I imagined,' I admit.

Seth offers a gentle smile, trying to comfort me. 'That may be true, but it's a life that the Moon Goddess herself has chosen just for you. It's a great blessing and an honour to be bestowed with such a destiny,' he says.

As Ryker and the others exit the diner, Ryker extends his hand to me, pulling me up from the ground. Our eyes lock, and there's an undeniable pull between us. ‘How are you feeling? From the bullet wound?’ I ask him.

Ryker smiles. His eyes fill with warmth. 'Well, there was a hole in my heart, but then you came along and filled it,' he teases.

I can't help but chuckle, shaking my head. 'Ryker, you almost died, and you're telling me jokes?' I tell him in disbelief and playfully push him away.

He opens the car door and gestures for me to go in. 'Luna's first,' he says with a grin. I roll my eyes and hop into the back seat, but Ryker doesn't waste a second and sits as close as possible beside me. I can't help but comment on our proximity. 'Ryker, are you trying to sit on my lap?' I ask.

He smirks mischievously. 'Can I?' he replies, his eyes twinkling with playfulness.

We glance at each other and burst into laughter.

Leaning towards the front seats, Ryker addresses Seth. 'Seth, let's get out of here,' he orders.
