Xander's POV
"Okay okay, I'm sorry" I apologized as I forced the intensity of my laughter to reduce. "I'm just surprised that you also have dirty thoughts, that's all," I said before I began to eat my food, which had already lost most of it's heat at this point. A bit of silence enveloped the house, with the clinks of the forks against the ceramic plates being the only sounds ambient in the air. While I quietly slurped some spaghetti, I suddenly remembered what brought me here in the first place. I was a bit curious as to how she felt during her surrogacy period.
"Say Methis?" I said, breaking the silence. She looked up, eyes widened at me with a strand of spaghetti dangling from between her lips. "Can I ask you something?" I asked.
"Yeah sure, what is it?" she asked as she speedily slurped the strand in.
"Do you trust me?" I asked with a serious look on my face.
"Yeah, a lot. Why?" she asked.
"You trust me?" I asked again to make sure.
"Of course I do," she responded, "We are friends, aren't we?" she added.
"Yeah, we are," I said, "we are," I repeated in a slightly lower voice.
"What's up? Why're you acting so strange all of a sudden?" she asked with a perplexed look on her face.
"Well I want you to be completely honest with me. No reservations," I said, "can you do that?" I asked, now looking at her with eyes that probably betrayed the fact that I was worried.
"Stop it, Xander, you're scaring me," she said.
"Can you do it?" I asked again.
"Alright, yes," she said with a pissed demeanor, "So what do you wanna know?" she asked, with an expression that clearly wasn't comfortable with how I was acting, but I had no choice than to be sure.
"What really happened during that year you seemingly disappeared from highschool?" I asked, looking her in the eye so I could detect any lie or attempt at deception. You see, Methis isn't really very good at lying. Hell, she barely even good at giving excuses. So reading her really is a just a no-brainer.
"I thought I already told you, I had to travel abroad for surgery," she responded, "Why are you suddenly asking again?" she asked. I could easily tell she was lying but the signs were less noticeable now. Probably because she had used the lie way too much.
"Methis, don't lie to me," I said to her with pleading eyes, "Just tell me the truth," I pleaded further.
"Well that is the truth, what else do you wanna hear?" she asked, her displeasure now becoming more evident, "I'm sick this. Why're acting like this?" she asked further. I didn't respond but let the silence increase the tension between us. I was going to make sure she tells me the truth today. She quietly resumed nit-picking her food with her fork. While I, with my fork, played around with the meatballs on my plate, with my eyes staring aimlessly at the plate.
"I met your stepmom yesterday," I said breaking the silence and looked her in the eye.
"You what?!" she yelled, banging her fists against the table.
"Yeah, you heard me loud and clear," I said this time with a very calm expression as I stared back at my plate.
"Are you crazy?" she asked, "Why would you interfere with my personal life?" she interrogated. I gave no immediate answer and instead took a little bite of meatball. Drops of nervous sweats dropped down her face. "I'm talking to you dammit!" she flared up, again banging her fists against the table. Then I looked up at her again.
"She told me something interesting," I said and took a sip of water from the glass beside my plate. I could feel her glare as I drank from the glass, but seemingly unfazed, I kept drinking and didn't mind her. "She said something about surrogacy," I said, in a bid to see how that would trigger her.
Methis glared at me, trying to hide all her reaction but I saw them all.
"Okay so now you know" she finally responded, "Yeah, I was a surrogate mother, so what?" she asked. I could see the look in her eyes as though I was hurting her seriously, but I pressed on because I had to be sure. I needed to save her from repeating the same mistake again.
"I had to ask her to describe the father and her description sounded awfully much like that Jamal guy," I said, "So guess what? I showed her a picture and she verified that it was him," I said further. At this point, I could see tears rolling down her cheeks. "Don't you get it, Methis? This is fucking serious," I said, "More serious that you can possibly make it out to be," I emphasized.
"Why?" she asked while sitting in her chair with tears rolling down her cheeks, "Why are you doing this?" she asked again.
"You don't get it, do you?" I said, "Jamal is a…"
"Get out!" she said, quietly interjecting me.
"What?" I asked, feeling surprised, "You don't get it, I'm doing this for…"
"GET OUT!!!" she screamed this time standing up and pointing at the door.
"Oh so that's how it's gonna be?" I asked, unpleasantly surprised as I stood up from the dinning chair.
"Get the fuck out of my house!" she said again.
"I will get out," I said, nodding my head repeatedly in supressed rage, "I'll leave but I really hope you don't regret this," I said before walking out of the apartment, slamming the door behind me as I left.
I heard I weep bitterly behind the door.
