Never Just Friends

Cracks in the Armor

Ch. 169 / 300 Mar 01, 2026

The strain of Ciara’s latest attacks was starting to seep into every corner of Hanna and Finn’s relationship. Though they tried to maintain a sense of normalcy, the weight of the rumors, the constant whispers, and the stares from their classmates was growing unbearable. No matter how hard they tried to pretend that everything was fine, there was a noticeable distance between them. The connection that had once felt so unbreakable now seemed fragile, frayed by the pressure that Ciara had thrust upon them.

It was a quiet evening when the tension between them became undeniable. Hanna sat on her bed, hunched over her laptop, reviewing the notes for a group project they were supposed to complete together. Finn sat beside her, his notebook open in front of him, though he hadn’t written anything for several minutes. Instead, his eyes were unfocused, staring at the wall as though the weight of the world was slowly crushing him.

Hanna glanced up from her screen, noticing the deep furrow in Finn’s brow, the way his jaw was clenched. She could feel the shift in the air between them—the silent frustration that had been building for weeks, now bubbling to the surface.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, her voice gentle but filled with concern. She had grown used to seeing Finn calm and composed, always the pillar she leaned on when things felt overwhelming. But tonight, something was different.

Finn sighed heavily, the sound filled with more than just weariness. He set his notebook aside and ran a hand through his hair, as if trying to push away the frustration that seemed to be eating at him from the inside.

“Everything,” he muttered, his voice tight with emotion. “The rumors, the posts, the stares—it’s like no matter what we do, she keeps finding ways to get under our skin. It’s like she’s always there, lurking in the background, pulling the strings.”

Hanna’s heart tightened as she watched him, seeing how this battle with Ciara was taking its toll on him. The Finn she knew was strong, steady, the one who always had a plan. But right now, he looked vulnerable in a way she hadn’t seen before. She reached for his hand, her fingers brushing against his, offering a small gesture of comfort, but she could tell it wasn’t enough to ease the storm brewing inside him.

“We’ll get through it,” she said softly, trying to sound more confident than she felt. “We’ve been through worse, Finn. We’ve always managed to find a way to fight back.”

Finn didn’t respond immediately. He just stared at their hands, his fingers twitching as though he was fighting against something that wasn’t there. His eyes were filled with doubt, and when he finally spoke again, the words cut deeper than she expected.

“What if we don’t?” he said, his voice low, almost resigned. “What if this never ends? What if she just keeps coming for us? How do we keep fighting when it feels like we’re losing?”

The raw vulnerability in his voice pierced through the quiet of the room. Hanna’s chest tightened as the weight of his words settled on her. She had never seen him like this—lost, uncertain, scared of what the future might hold. She could feel the panic creeping up from the pit of her stomach, threatening to take root, but she refused to let it take hold. Not now. Not when they needed to hold on to each other more than ever.

She leaned closer to him, her voice firm as she spoke. “It will end. I don’t know how yet, but it will. We just have to keep pushing. We can’t let her win. You just have to trust me.”

For a long moment, Finn didn’t say anything. He simply looked at her, his gaze intense, searching her face as if trying to find something that would reassure him. There was so much doubt in his eyes, so much fear of the unknown, but there was also something else—a flicker of hope, however small, that she might be right. That together, they could face whatever Ciara threw at them.

Hanna reached for his face, her thumb gently brushing over his cheek, trying to comfort him the best she could. “I’m not giving up,” she said, her voice steady. “And I’m not letting you give up, either.”

Finn’s expression softened, the sharp lines of frustration easing ever so slightly as he finally gave her a small, reluctant nod. “I do trust you, Hanna,” he murmured, his voice quieter now, filled with something that resembled acceptance. “I always do.”

The words felt like a balm, but the doubt still lingered between them, unspoken but present. Finn had always been the strong one, the one who had protected her, who had carried them through the darkest moments. And now, for the first time, he was vulnerable, unsure of how much longer he could stand up to the storm Ciara was stirring. Hanna knew she couldn’t promise him that everything would be fine. She couldn’t promise that Ciara would stop her relentless attack. But she could promise that they wouldn’t face it alone.

Hanna leaned forward and kissed him, a soft kiss that lingered just a little longer than usual, as though trying to convey everything she couldn’t say with words. When they pulled apart, she rested her forehead against his, breathing in the familiar scent of him—the comforting presence that, despite everything, still felt like home.

“We’ll figure this out,” Hanna whispered, her voice steady, though her heart was still racing. “We’re in this together. We always will be.”

Finn closed his eyes, nodding once more, as if reaffirming his trust in her, in them. But as they sat there, in the quiet of her room, the weight of the world pressing on them both, Hanna couldn’t help but wonder how much longer they could keep fighting. How long they could endure the emotional toll Ciara’s games were taking on them before it all became too much.
