Never Just Friends

A Dangerous Game

Ch. 160 / 300 Mar 01, 2026

That night, Hanna and Finn sat in his truck outside her house, the engine idling but the warmth inside the vehicle doing little to ease the chill in Hanna’s chest. The comforting hum of the radio seemed distant, muffled by the tension between them. Everything felt different now—Ciara’s sudden return had cast a shadow over their once-comfortable silence. Hanna tried to focus on the soft glow of the streetlights, the snow gently falling outside, but her mind kept drifting back to the conversation with Elordi, and the unsettling calm with which Ciara had approached her.

The weight of it pressed down on her as she turned to Finn, her fingers nervously tracing the edge of her seat. “What do you think she’s planning?” Hanna asked, her voice barely above a whisper, as if speaking too loudly would give Ciara’s intentions more power.

Finn shifted slightly in his seat, his gaze intense as he looked out the windshield for a moment before turning to her. His fingers found hers, his touch warm and steady, offering her a small amount of comfort amidst the uncertainty. “I don’t know,” he admitted, his voice low, as though pondering the same question in the silence between them. “But whatever it is, we’ll deal with it together.”

Hanna wanted to believe him. She wanted to hold on to the calm certainty in his words, but the unease in her stomach refused to be ignored. She leaned back against the headrest, her mind racing through all the possible ways Ciara could make her move. She had seen it before—the way Ciara thrived on power, on control. She was never just a passive antagonist; she always had a plan. And now, Hanna had the sinking feeling that Ciara’s return wasn’t just about herself. It was about them.

Her voice faltered when she spoke again. “What if she tries to come between us?” Her chest tightened as she looked at Finn, her eyes searching his for reassurance. She wasn’t sure if she was more afraid of what Ciara could do or the fact that part of her feared Finn might not be able to shield her from it.

Finn’s jaw tightened, and he leaned forward slightly, his gaze locking with hers. His expression was fierce, unwavering. “She won’t,” he said firmly, his voice steady despite the tension in the air. “She can’t.”

Hanna tried to find solace in his words, to let them wash over her like a protective barrier. But something inside her refused to settle. Ciara had a way of getting under people’s skin, of manipulating situations to her advantage, and Hanna couldn’t shake the feeling that whatever game Ciara was playing, she was already one step ahead.

Finn’s hand gently squeezed hers, as if he could read the storm brewing inside her. He leaned in, his face softening. “Hey,” he murmured, his voice soothing. “You’re not alone in this. Not now, not ever. I’ve got your back, no matter what.”

Hanna closed her eyes for a moment, letting the warmth of his words wrap around her like a lifeline. She wanted to believe it, to trust him completely. But the nagging thought of Ciara’s smirk—the cold certainty in her eyes—lingered in her mind. Could it really be that simple?

Finn’s voice broke through her spiraling thoughts as he reached for her face, gently cupping her cheek. “I mean it,” he said, his eyes sincere. “She’s not going to come between us. I won’t let her.”

Hanna smiled faintly, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. Her heart swelled with affection for Finn, and for a moment, she let herself believe that maybe everything would be okay. But as Finn leaned in to kiss her, his lips warm and tender against hers, a deep sense of unease settled in the pit of her stomach.

The kiss was sweet, a quiet reassurance that everything would be fine, but as she pulled back, she couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that Ciara was already planning her next move, already figuring out how to insert herself back into their lives, how to turn everything upside down again.

As Finn smiled at her, his thumb brushing against her lips, Hanna fought to push the thought away. She wanted to be present in the moment, to hold on to the peace she had found in Finn’s arms. But the storm that was brewing on the horizon couldn’t be ignored, no matter how much she wanted to escape it.

Finn seemed to sense her shift in mood, his brow furrowing slightly. “What’s going on in that head of yours?” he asked, his voice gentle.

Hanna sighed, her fingers brushing against his. “I don’t know. I just… I keep thinking about Ciara. I know she’s not going to back off. I’m just afraid of what she’s going to do next.”

Finn’s expression softened, and he pulled her a little closer, his arm draping around her shoulders. “Whatever she tries, we’ll face it together. You don’t have to carry this by yourself, Hanna. I’ve got you. Always.”

The sincerity in his words warmed her, but a small voice in the back of her mind whispered that Ciara was still out there, still watching, still planning. Hanna wanted to believe that everything would be fine, that nothing could tear them apart, but deep down, she knew that Ciara was a force that couldn’t be underestimated. And the cracks that had just begun to form in her sense of security would be hard to ignore.

As Finn drove away, Hanna watched his taillights fade into the distance. A feeling of foreboding settled in her chest, heavy and persistent. She didn’t know what Ciara was planning, but one thing was certain: the game had just begun, and the stakes were higher than ever.
