The next morning, the first rumors started.
Hanna had barely stepped foot inside the school when she felt it. The weight of eyes on her. The hushed conversations that seemed to pause as she walked by. Her pulse quickened as she tried to ignore it, but the whispers were impossible to ignore. The usual buzz of students rushing between classes seemed off today—there was a tension in the air, thick and palpable.
When she reached her locker, she caught sight of Emily standing by it, her face pale, her eyes wide with concern. Hanna’s stomach dropped at the sight. She had a feeling she knew exactly what this was about.
“You need to see this,” Emily said in a low voice, holding out her phone to Hanna. Her hands were shaking slightly, and when Hanna took the device, she could feel the weight of the moment in the air between them.
The screen displayed a post on one of the student forums. Hanna’s heart sank as she saw the blurry photo of her and Finn sitting close in his truck, the image clearly taken through the window. The caption beneath it made her blood run cold:
“Guess Finn’s not as loyal as he seems. Who else has Hanna been sneaking around with?”
The world seemed to stop for a moment. Hanna’s breath hitched as the words blurred in front of her eyes. Her mind raced, trying to process what she was seeing. The photo was blurry, almost like it had been intentionally taken from a distance, but the insinuation was clear. Someone had taken the picture and twisted it into something sinister.
“Is this…?” Hanna trailed off, her voice trembling as she looked at Emily. “This is Ciara.”
Emily nodded, her jaw set. “Obviously. But how do we prove it?”
Hanna clenched her jaw, her fingers tightening around the phone. She didn’t need proof to know what this was. The timing was too perfect, the manipulative cruelty too familiar. Ciara was making her move. Again.
“I’m not even surprised,” Hanna muttered, her chest tightening with the weight of it all. The post was nothing but a smear campaign, an attempt to create doubt and stir up trouble. But Hanna knew that rumors, no matter how unfounded, had a way of spreading like wildfire.
She swiped through the comments, her heart sinking further with each word. Some were sympathetic, others mocking, but the most damning were the ones questioning her loyalty to Finn. And worst of all, there were a few whispers suggesting that Finn had been “two-timing” her, questioning the integrity of their relationship.
Before Hanna could respond, she felt a presence behind her. Finn appeared in the doorway, his face dark as he saw the post over her shoulder. His expression hardened immediately as he read the caption, his jaw tightening with each passing second.
“This is bullshit,” he muttered, his voice low and filled with anger. He reached forward, taking the phone from her hands, his fingers brushing against hers. His eyes never left the screen as he scanned the comments, his brows furrowing deeper. “No one’s going to believe this.”
But even as Finn spoke, the looks they received in the hallway told a different story. Students who had been talking in groups only moments ago were now casting furtive glances their way. Some of them smirked, others simply stared, their gazes lingering just a little too long. The whispers were no longer just behind Hanna’s back—they were out in the open, and the judgment in the air was suffocating.
Hanna’s heart sank further. Despite Finn’s words, despite the strength in his voice, she could already feel the shift. She wasn’t sure if it was just the rumors or the way people looked at her now, but the distance between her and the rest of the students had already begun to widen.
“This is exactly what she wanted,” Hanna whispered, her voice barely audible, as she watched Finn’s jaw tighten in frustration. She felt his anger, but she also felt the weight of the realization creeping in. “To make us look like we’re… I don’t even know—faking it? Sneaking around?”
Finn turned to her, his eyes softer now, filled with the familiar warmth that usually calmed her nerves. “She’s trying to tear us apart,” he said, his voice firm but laced with an undercurrent of frustration. “But we’re not letting her. This is just another game to her, and we’re not playing by her rules.”
Hanna nodded, but the lingering uncertainty gnawed at her. “I don’t know, Finn. What if people believe it? What if it starts to… I don’t know, get worse?”
He placed a hand on her shoulder, his grip gentle but firm. “It won’t. We’ll make sure of that.”
But as they stood there, facing the growing storm of whispers and glances, Hanna couldn’t shake the sinking feeling in her chest. She knew that Ciara had a way of making things spiral out of control. And now, with one post, one blurry photo, and a few carefully chosen words, Ciara had already taken the first strike.
