The days following the fallout felt like a blur to Hanna. The weight of the rumors, the stares, and the never-ending whispers felt heavier with each passing hour. She had exposed the truth—had done what she thought was necessary—but the consequences of that choice were more than she had anticipated. And now, the person she needed most wasn’t there for her. Finn’s silence was suffocating.
She had tried everything—texts, calls, even stopping by his house after school—but he hadn’t answered. His unread messages piled up on her phone, and with each one, her heart sank further. The last thing she had expected, after everything, was for him to pull away from her.
Hanna sat in the cafeteria, her eyes scanning the crowd but not really seeing anything. She could hear Emily talking, her words a muffled hum in the background, but none of it registered. Her phone buzzed again, another message from Finn that had gone unanswered.
“I don’t get it,” Hanna muttered under her breath, clenching her fists around the edge of the table. “Why isn’t he talking to me?”
Emily’s voice broke through her thoughts. “Hanna, he’s just… processing everything. You’ve both been through so much. He’s probably just trying to figure it all out.”
Hanna shook her head, her fingers trembling as she picked up her phone again, her gaze fixed on the screen but still no response from Finn. “I get that he’s upset, but this silence… it’s killing me, Emily. I feel like I’m losing him, and I don’t even know what to do.”
Emily reached across the table, placing a comforting hand on hers. “You have to give him time, Hanna. It’s hard for him, too. He probably feels hurt and confused. This wasn’t easy for him to process, especially with everything that’s been happening.”
“I know,” Hanna whispered, her voice hollow. “But I can’t just sit here and wait. It feels like he’s slipping further away.”
Emily squeezed her hand gently. “I know it’s hard, but sometimes, people just need time to figure things out. You need to trust that he’ll come around.”
But even as Emily’s words settled in, Hanna wasn’t so sure. Trust? How could she trust that Finn would come back after everything? He had always been the one who supported her, who believed in her, but now that belief seemed to be wavering.
Hanna’s mind raced with thoughts of what had gone wrong. Had she pushed him too far with her decision? Had exposing Ciara—exposing the truth—been the wrong choice after all? She had done what she thought was right, but now it felt like she had ripped apart the only thing she had left: her relationship with Finn.
Later that night, after another round of unanswered texts, Hanna found herself staring at her phone, wishing for a sign, any sign that he was still there. The silence stretched on, and she felt more and more like she was sinking into an abyss, unable to escape.
The next day at school, things didn’t get any better. As much as Hanna tried to focus on the lessons and pretend like everything was fine, the hole in her chest—caused by Finn’s absence—kept growing. Every time she passed him in the hall, he avoided her gaze. Every time she sent him a message, it went unread. The coldness between them was growing, and it felt like there was nothing she could do to stop it.
By the end of the day, Hanna found herself standing outside, staring at the parking lot where Finn’s truck was parked. Her heart ached as she saw him walking toward it with a friend, laughing, but not with her—not even looking at her. She wanted to call out to him, to beg him to just talk to her, but the words caught in her throat.
Her phone buzzed once again. This time, it was a message from Finn.
Finn: We really need to talk, but not now. I just can’t handle it today.
The message was a knife to her heart. At least he acknowledged her. But the words—not now—felt like an insurmountable wall between them.
She sat down on a bench, her shoulders slumped, feeling more alone than ever. Was this what she had to accept? That the one person who had always stood by her, who had always been her rock, was now retreating into himself? Could she even fix this?
Emily found her a few minutes later, sitting quietly, staring down at her phone.
“Still nothing?” Emily asked softly, sitting beside her.
“Yeah,” Hanna replied, her voice barely a whisper. “Nothing.”
“I’m sorry, Hanna,” Emily said, her voice full of empathy. “But you can’t force him to talk to you. He’s going to come around. He just needs time.”
“I know,” Hanna said, her voice thick with emotion. “But I don’t know how much more of this silence I can take.”
Emily placed a hand on her shoulder. “You’ve been through a lot, and you’ve done everything you can. All you can do now is give him the space to process it. He’ll come back to you. He has to.”
But Hanna wasn’t so sure anymore. The distance between them felt so vast, and she had no idea how to bridge that gap. She had done what was necessary—she had fought back, exposed the truth—but was it worth losing Finn in the process?
As the school day ended and Hanna walked out into the parking lot, her thoughts were consumed with doubt. She didn’t know how long she could wait for him to come back to her. She didn’t know how long she could bear this silence.
The storm she had started with Ciara was far from over. But now, it seemed like the storm inside her was the one she couldn’t control.
