Never Just Friends

Crossing the Line

Ch. 163 / 300 Mar 01, 2026

A week later, Ciara escalated her game.

Hanna was sitting in the quiet of the library, her focus on an assignment she’d been trying to finish. The noise of the school outside—the chatter, the clattering of lockers, the rushing of footsteps—felt distant as she immersed herself in her work. She hadn’t seen Finn all morning, and though she tried to push the worry to the back of her mind, something inside her told her that the uneasy feeling in her stomach wasn’t just from Ciara’s previous antics.

Just as she was about to turn the page, the door to the library slammed open, startling her out of her thoughts. She looked up to find Finn standing in the doorway, his face a mask of anger, his usual calm demeanor gone. His eyes were dark with frustration, and his jaw was clenched so tightly that it seemed as if it might snap.

Before Hanna could speak, Finn walked directly to her, slamming his phone down onto the table in front of her. The force of the action made her flinch, and for a brief moment, she was unsure whether it was his anger or the shock of what was coming that left her breathless.

“Read this,” Finn said, his voice tight with restrained fury. There was no greeting, no explanation—just an overwhelming need to show her the evidence of the latest attack.

Hanna’s heart skipped a beat as she picked up the phone, her fingers trembling slightly as she unlocked the screen. The text thread was immediately visible, the messages a carefully crafted series of exchanges. They were between Finn and someone named Alyssa—a name that was completely unfamiliar to Hanna. The texts were flirtatious, suggestive, and appeared to be from Finn, though she knew immediately that they weren’t real. They were the perfect setup, designed to make it look as though he had been sneaking around behind her back.

The sickening realization of what Ciara had done hit Hanna hard. This wasn’t just a rumor—it was a personal attack, something far more invasive than a simple photo. This time, she was going for Finn, going for the core of their relationship.

“They’re saying I’ve been cheating,” Finn said, his voice now strained with frustration. His hands clenched into fists at his sides as he paced in front of her. “That I’ve been texting some girl behind your back. How the hell did she get this?”

Hanna’s chest tightened as she read through the messages again, her heart racing as the words blurred in front of her eyes. It was obvious to her—too obvious—that the texts had been fabricated, manipulated to look like Finn had been engaging in a secret conversation with this Alyssa. The timestamps, the playful banter—it all seemed so real, so convincing.

But Hanna knew it wasn’t. It couldn’t be.

“It’s fake,” Hanna said immediately, her voice a little more forceful than she meant. She tried to catch Finn’s eye, but he was already pacing again, his hands tugging at his hair in frustration.

“Of course it is,” Finn snapped, his anger spilling over. “But that doesn’t matter if people believe it. This is going to get out, Hanna. I can already feel it. How long until someone starts spreading it? How long until they turn it into something even worse?”

Hanna’s heart clenched at the bitterness in his words. He was right in a way—no matter how false the accusations were, rumors had a way of growing out of control. Once they were planted, they spread faster than the truth could catch up.

She placed a hand on his arm, the touch a small attempt to anchor him in the moment, to ground them both amidst the chaos that was unraveling around them. “We’ll figure it out,” she said, her voice soft but firm. “We’ll expose the truth. Just… don’t let her get to you.”

Finn stopped pacing and turned to face her, his eyes dark with frustration and something else—something that made Hanna’s chest tighten. There was doubt in his gaze, a flicker of uncertainty that Hanna hadn’t seen before.

“Don’t let her get to me?” he repeated, his voice softer now, but filled with a raw edge. “Hanna, people are already talking. People are already looking at me like I’m the bad guy. They don’t see the truth—they see what she wants them to see. And no matter how much I try to deny it, the damage is done.”

Hanna’s breath caught in her throat. The doubt she saw in Finn’s eyes scared her more than anything Ciara had done. She reached out, her hand hovering near his chest, unsure if he would let her touch him. He didn’t pull away, but the distance between them felt heavier now, more uncertain.

“You can’t let her win, Finn,” she said, her voice thick with emotion. “You’ve got to stay strong. I believe you. I know who you are. And I know this isn’t true.”

Finn didn’t respond immediately. His gaze was distant, his lips tight as he processed her words. He seemed torn, as if caught between wanting to believe that the truth would win out and fearing that this game, this manipulation, was bigger than both of them.

Finally, he exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair, his shoulders slumping slightly in exhaustion. “I don’t know how much more of this I can take, Hanna. I don’t want to lose you to her. I won’t let her take you away from me.”

Hanna’s heart ached for him. She could feel the weight of his words, the raw vulnerability he had hidden behind his anger. She stepped closer to him, reaching up to cup his face in her hands. “You won’t lose me, Finn. No matter what she does, no matter how many lies she spreads. I’m not going anywhere.”

For a long moment, they stood in the quiet of the library, the noise of the school outside nothing but distant white noise. The pressure in Hanna’s chest began to ease slightly, but the nagging fear that Ciara’s attack had planted still lingered, unspoken but ever-present.

The world outside was falling apart, and no matter how hard they tried to hold onto the truth, it felt like Ciara was always one step ahead, manipulating them into a corner. But they had each other. And no matter how dangerous the game Ciara was playing, Hanna knew that together, they could face anything.
