My Husband Chose Her Over Me

Chapter 42 – The Hollow Veil Strikes Again

Ch. 42 / 213 Mar 25, 2026

Boots struck the stone floor, voices rising and falling against the high ceiling. Smoke hung on the messengers’ cloaks, sharp and bitter, the smell of burning market stalls following them into the chamber.

“The Veil has struck again,” one gasped, dropping to a knee before the throne. “Flames at the southern square. Merchants dead. Children missing.”

Elara’s heart kicked hard in her chest, but she kept her shoulders straight. The messenger’s words brought back the memory of those symbols, the ones she had seen burning in her dreams. She could almost see them now, carved in fire, reminders of a darkness that never forgot blood.

The nobles shifted, their jewels catching the light as they leaned in, voices dropping to hurried whispers behind their fans.

Duke Harrow stood first, his velvet robes brushing the floor. His voice was slow and heavy, each word sticking in the air.

“This is the price of defiance,” he intoned. “Return to tradition, and the gods will be appeased. We survived the Dark Age not through mercy but sacrifice. A life for a life, blood for blood - it has always been Verdana’s way.”

Murmurs of approval circled. Rings tapped against polished wood.

Duchess Verayne’s smile glittered as sharp as a blade. “And if mercy is to be our queen’s creed, perhaps she might take her place among the flames. Let the gods see her generosity firsthand.”

A few nobles laughed quietly, the sound polite but sharp at the edges.

Elara curled her fingers into her palms. Heat from the fires outside seemed to press against her skin, and the smell of blood lingered in the air.

Her voice rang out, sharp as steel:

“Mercy is not weakness.”

The chamber fell still.

She waited, letting the silence settle in the room before she spoke again.

“Tradition gave us centuries of war, famine, and chains. Tradition carved altars out of children’s bones and called it order. If that is strength, then it is a poison VeHer words hung in the air, sharp and final.d it again.”

Her words cracked against the walls like a whip.

Some nobles shifted uneasily, but others narrowed their eyes, lips twitching in derision.

Harrow’s jaw flexed. “Your Highness speaks as though mercy fills granaries, defends gates, or builds walls. Mercy cannot hold back flame.”

“No,” Elara shot back. “But love can bind where fear only scatters. Hope can build where terror razes. Look outside these walls - see what your sacrifices have earned you. Ashes. Corpses. A city too afraid to breathe.”

She raised her voice, steady and clear, so it carried through the haze in the chamber.

“If Verdana is to endure, it will not be through fear of old gods or blind obedience to shadows. It will be through mercy that unites, justice that heals, and courage that refuses to bow to chains.”

The chamber was silent for a moment.

Then came the murmurs again, heavier now, clashing currents of approval and scorn.

She looked across the table and found Caden.

His gaze dropped. He said nothing.

That silence pressed down on her, heavier than any laughter from the nobles.

The council dissolved soon after, not with agreement, but with that same hollow civility - bows too deep to be sincere, smiles too thin to be safe. One by one, they filed out, trailing whispers like smoke behind them.

When the last noble left, Elara let herself sink into her chair. The silence in the chamber felt heavier than the fires burning outside the city walls.

That night, her dreams returned.

She stood on a battlefield, bodies scattered across the ground. Blood had soaked into the earth, shining dark under a sky lit by fire. At the center was her ancestor, the woman who haunted every one of her dreams.

There were no chains on her ancestor’s wrists now. Her hands were stained red, blood running down her fingers, which shook as if they had never been clean.

The ancestor looked up, her eyes old and empty.

“The choice,” she whispered, voice like broken bells, “is never mercy or strength. It is love - or chains.”The battlefield faded, replaced by swirling smoke.

Elara gasped awake, her body slick with sweat, her chest tight.

Beside her, Caden slept, his breath even, his arm draped over her. She turned her head and watched him in the pale light. His presence helped steady her breathing, but the words from her dream stayed with her. d.ream’s words clung like iron.

Love or chains.

Wasn’t that the truth she had always known?

She let her fingers rest on his knuckles. He did not move.

She pressed closer to him, but her thoughts kept turning.

The nobles would never yield willingly. They would rather burn her than break their pattern.

Caden, who steadied her, would have to choose too, sooner or later.

When the time came, what would he choose?

Her? Or the chains he had been born to guard?

Elara closed her eyes again, but sleep did not come.

Outside, the city woke, smoke drifting into the pale morning. Verdana faced another day, heavy with fire and the weight of what might come.
