Chapter 389

Ch. 389 / 450 May 05, 2026

Dain stood in the center of the darkened chamber, his hands gripping the shard tightly, its dark energy pulsing through him like a living thing. The power was intoxicating, but there was something else—something gnawing at the edges of his mind. The shard had given him everything he’d ever desired—strength, control, the promise of a future where no one would dare challenge him. Yet, as he continued to absorb its power, he felt himself slipping further away from the man he had once been.

The Warden stood nearby, a dark figure cloaked in shadow, watching Dain with quiet approval. His eyes glowed with an unsettling light, as if he could see through Dain’s very soul.

“Do you feel it, Dain?” the Warden asked softly, his voice smooth and persuasive. “The power coursing through your veins. It’s more than you ever dreamed of, isn’t it?”

Dain nodded, though his thoughts were distant. He could feel the shadows closing in on him, wrapping around his heart like a vice. The power was magnificent, yes—but it came with a cost. He could feel it, a darkness spreading within him, tugging at his very core.

“Why do I feel like I’m losing myself?” Dain asked, his voice strained, as though the words themselves were heavy.

The Warden’s expression remained unreadable, his eyes narrowing slightly as if considering the question. Then, with a cold, almost mocking smile, he stepped closer to Dain.

“You’re not losing yourself,” the Warden said, his voice soothing yet filled with an undeniable edge. “What you feel is the old you—the weak you—fading away. You’re becoming something stronger, something greater. This power is yours for the taking. All you have to do is embrace it fully. Complete the ritual, and you will become one with the shard.”

Dain clenched his fists, his knuckles white, as the Warden’s words sunk deeper into his mind. He had always prided himself on his strength—on his ability to rise above his circumstances. But the deeper he went into this path, the more he questioned what he was truly becoming.

“But… what about her?” Dain’s voice broke slightly as he thought of Elyra. Her image flickered in his mind—a brief, fleeting vision of the girl he had once known, before everything had been consumed by shadow. “She’ll stop me. She always does.”

The Warden’s gaze hardened, his voice taking on a more commanding tone. “Elyra is a distraction. She cannot stop you, Dain. She will only stand in your way. You’ve seen the visions. You know what she’ll do to try and destroy you. Don’t let her weakness hold you back.”

Dain’s heart thudded painfully in his chest, a cold ache spreading within him. He had always believed he was doing the right thing—fighting for the power to change the world, to make it bend to his will. But now… now, he wasn’t so sure.

“She’s not weak,” Dain muttered, almost to himself. “She’s my sister. She still cares about me.”

The Warden’s voice cut through his thoughts, sharp and insistent. “She cares about what you were, Dain. Not what you are becoming. You need to let go of the past. The power you’ve taken is what will give you control over everything. Elyra? She’s nothing but a memory. The future is yours to command.”

Dain’s eyes darkened as he tried to push the conflicting thoughts aside. He could feel the shard pulling at him, urging him to move forward, to embrace the darkness fully. The Warden’s words echoed in his mind, spinning webs of doubt that tangled with his own desires.

“Finish the ritual,” the Warden insisted, his tone leaving no room for argument. “Claim the power that is rightfully yours.”

But just as Dain’s resolve was beginning to solidify, a sharp, vivid image flashed before his eyes—one that shattered his focus completely. He saw himself standing alone in a desolate world, surrounded by shadows that seemed to stretch endlessly, closing in on him. The air was thick with emptiness, the silence deafening.

In the distance, Elyra’s voice rang out, faint but unmistakable. “Dain… you’ve lost yourself. Please, come back.”

Her words pierced through him like a blade, and for the briefest of moments, he felt something—something he hadn’t felt in so long. Regret. Remorse. A deep, aching emptiness that threatened to consume him entirely.

“Dain…” The voice came again, but this time it was distant, fading with each passing second.

The vision vanished as quickly as it had come, leaving Dain trembling in its wake. His breath came in shallow gasps, and for a moment, the shadows around him seemed to recoil, as if even they were unsure of what was happening.

Dain turned to the Warden, his eyes burning with confusion and anger. “What was that?” he demanded, his voice raw with emotion. “Why did I see that?”

The Warden’s smile was cold, calculating. “It’s the shard’s way of showing you what you will become if you hesitate,” he said. “Weakness, doubt… they will destroy you, Dain. You must not let her pull you back into the light. The darkness is the only path forward. Complete the ritual. Become the master of your own fate.”

But despite the Warden’s words, Dain’s thoughts were clouded, his heart torn. Was he truly meant to embrace the darkness—completely? Was there no place for redemption, for a second chance?

The Warden’s voice broke through his internal struggle, harsh and commanding. “Stop wasting time, Dain. Finish what you started.”

As Dain stared into the darkness, the pulse of the shard thrumming louder in his mind, he saw the vision again—his lone figure standing in the shadows, Elyra’s faint call echoing in the distance.

And for a moment, just a fleeting moment, Dain wondered if he could still hear her… or if he was already too far gone.

The Warden’s voice echoed one last time, cold and final. “You cannot afford hesitation now.”

And as Dain took a step forward, the shadows seemed to close in around him completely.
