Chapter 415

Ch. 415 / 450 May 05, 2026

The cold stone walls of the camp’s holding cell echoed with the sound of footsteps. Elyra stood outside the dimly lit room where the spy had been confined, her mind racing. The cryptic message left by the intruder weighed heavily on her thoughts, the words still lingering in the air like a haunting refrain. The final ascendant. The ritual was far from over, and now, they were on the edge of something far darker than they had imagined.

Inside the room, Selene stood over the captured spy, her posture rigid, her eyes sharp with focus. She was a master of interrogation, and Elyra knew that, despite her usually calm demeanor, Selene would stop at nothing to get the truth.

Elyra crossed the threshold of the room, her presence commanding the attention of both women. The spy, a young man in his mid-twenties, sat shackled to a chair, his face bruised from the previous confrontations. But it was his eyes, haunted and tired, that Elyra focused on as she approached.

“Tell me everything,” Selene’s voice was low, but it carried an unspoken threat.

The spy shuddered, his eyes darting nervously. He licked his lips before speaking. “I didn’t want any of this… but they promised me power. They promised me freedom from the shadows.” He paused, glancing at Elyra before continuing. “I’m just a pawn in their game.”

“What game?” Elyra pressed, her voice tight with urgency. “Who is the ascendant, and where are they?”

The spy’s breath caught as he looked down, avoiding their gazes. “The Moonlit Cradle. That’s where it all began. Where the shard’s power is strongest. That’s where the ascendant will rise. From the ashes… and bring eternal darkness.”

Elyra felt the blood drain from her face. The Moonlit Cradle. The place of power, the source of the shard’s corruption. It was a place she had heard of in legends, a sacred site for her people, now tainted by the shadows. If the ascendant was rising there… it could mean the end of everything.

“I have nothing more to say,” the spy muttered, looking up with defiance in his eyes. “You can’t stop it. The darkness will consume everything.”

Selene gave him a hard look, her hands gripping the edge of the table. “You’ve said enough,” she snapped. “Take him away.”

As the guards led the spy out of the room, Elyra turned to Selene, her mind racing with the weight of the revelation. “The Moonlit Cradle. We have to go there.”

Selene nodded, her expression grim. “It’s our only chance to stop this madness. But Elyra, we’re not just fighting remnants of the Warden’s forces anymore. We’re fighting something far worse.”

Elyra’s gaze hardened. “Then we’ll be ready. We have no other choice.”

Later that day, Elyra stood at the head of her forces, preparing them for the long journey ahead. The camp was buzzing with activity, the soldiers packing up and organizing for the march to the Moonlit Cradle. Tension was thick in the air, as uncertainty hung over every decision made. No one knew exactly what they would face when they reached the Cradle, but one thing was clear: they had no time to waste.

But as Elyra looked across the camp, she saw Dain standing off to the side, his face a mask of indecision. He was distant, his eyes clouded with confusion and doubt. Elyra felt a pang of concern in her chest. Dain had been struggling with his place among them ever since the destruction of the shard, and the weight of his actions still hung heavily over him. She had hoped the journey ahead would give him the time and space to heal, but now it seemed that even that hope was slipping away.

She approached him quietly, her footsteps barely audible against the soft ground. Dain didn’t turn to acknowledge her until she was close enough to touch his shoulder.

“Dain,” she said softly, her voice barely a whisper. “Are you ready?”

He didn’t answer at first. Instead, he stared at the horizon, his jaw clenched tight. “I don’t know if I belong here anymore,” he said, his voice heavy with a burden she couldn’t fully understand. “I’ve done things… terrible things. I’m not the person you remember.”

Elyra placed a hand on his arm, her touch gentle but firm. “You are my brother. That hasn’t changed.”

Dain met her gaze then, and for a brief moment, she saw the man he used to be. The pain in his eyes, the regret, was so raw that it made her heart ache. But it was also filled with something else—something she hadn’t seen before: hope. The same hope that had driven him to fight beside her despite the darkness that still lingered within him.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me,” Dain said, his voice strained. “But I need to find a way to redeem myself.”

Elyra nodded, squeezing his arm lightly. “We’ll find that path together.”

As they continued preparing for the journey, a chill settled over the camp. It wasn’t the cold of the night, nor the anxiety of the mission ahead. It was something deeper, a presence in the shadows that Elyra couldn’t quite place. Her instincts screamed that something was wrong.

Then, Cassian burst into their camp, his expression tense, his breath heavy. “Elyra!” he called out urgently. “You need to see this.”

The unease in his voice sent a jolt through Elyra’s chest. She followed him quickly, her heart pounding as he led her to a quiet corner of the camp. There, lying discarded near the edge of their supplies, was a small, torn piece of fabric. It was from one of their own—its markings unmistakable.

“I found this near the fire,” Cassian said, his face grim. “Someone here is aiding the Warden’s remnants. We have a traitor among us.”

Elyra felt a cold fury rise in her chest. The journey ahead was already filled with danger, but now betrayal threatened them from within. Someone had been working against them all along.

-: Cassian discovers that someone in their camp has been secretly aiding the Warden’s remnants.
