Chapter 419

Ch. 419 / 450 May 05, 2026

Dain staggered through the oppressive darkness of the Moonlit Cradle, his every breath shallow and strained. The weight of the shard embedded in his chest was like a constant ache, a reminder of the power it held over him, twisting his every thought, every action. The whispers from the shard grew louder with each step, echoing through his mind, urging him to give in.

“You were never meant to share the light,” the shard’s voice hissed, a dark, seductive pull that reverberated through his veins. “Take it for yourself.”

Dain clenched his fists, trying to block out the voice, to focus on something—anything—other than the shard. He had resisted for so long, fought against the darkness, but the longer he fought, the weaker he became. The shard had become a part of him, and no matter how hard he tried to shake it, it would never let go.

The cold, suffocating darkness around him seemed to close in, and he felt the very land beneath his feet tremble as the shard’s power bled into the world around him. The Cradle was alive with its influence, corrupting everything it touched. Even the air felt heavy, charged with dark energy that weighed on his chest, threatening to suffocate him.

A flash of light pierced through the gloom, and Dain’s eyes snapped to the ground before him. There, half-buried in the dirt, he saw a shadowy figure—an illusion of his own mind. The vision took shape, and before him stood Elyra, but not the Elyra he remembered. This Elyra was different. Her eyes, once filled with compassion, were now cold and distant.

“You failed me,” the vision of Elyra spat, her voice harsh, filled with disappointment and anger. “You failed all of us.”

The words cut through him like a blade, leaving a raw wound in his chest. He had failed her. He had failed everyone. He had tried to protect them, tried to fight the darkness, but in the end, it had consumed him. The light that had once burned bright within him had been swallowed up by the shadow, and now all that remained was this hollow version of himself, a shadow of what he had been.

“No, Elyra, I…” Dain whispered, his voice weak, but the vision of her only laughed, its form flickering and warping like smoke.

“You never deserved to stand beside her,” the illusion hissed, its voice twisting with bitterness. “You were never meant to be the light. You were always meant to be the darkness.”

The words struck him deep, planting themselves in his soul like poison. He could feel the truth of them in his bones, could feel the shard’s power tugging at him, urging him to embrace what he truly was. The light had never been his destiny. He had always been the shadow, the one who was meant to rise from the darkness.

“Accept it, Dain,” the shard whispered again, its voice growing louder, more insistent. “You were never meant to share the light. You were meant to rule the darkness. Take it for yourself.”

Dain shook his head, trying to block out the voice, trying to resist. But it was useless. The shard’s power had already taken root in him, and the more he fought, the stronger it became. His vision blurred as the shadows around him began to shift and swirl, creeping up from the ground like tendrils of black smoke. They wrapped around his arms, his legs, tugging at him, pulling him deeper into the darkness.

The power, the shadow—it was overwhelming, intoxicating. For the first time, Dain felt as if he could actually feel it, could actually control it. He could feel the power surge within him, coursing through his veins, and for the briefest of moments, he almost welcomed it. This was what he had been meant for, wasn’t it? This was his destiny.

“No,” he gasped, trying to break free from the grip of the shadows. But his body betrayed him, shaking with the effort of resisting, his hands trembling as the darkness seeped deeper into his skin.

The voice of the shard echoed again, louder this time, its tone filled with cruel certainty. “You were always destined to rise. Become the ascendant. The world will bow to you.”

Dain’s body trembled as the power surged through him, his chest burning where the shard was embedded. He could feel the transformation beginning. His skin tingled as the darkness flowed into him, reshaping him, remaking him. He could feel the shadows eating away at his humanity, consuming him piece by piece, until nothing remained but the vessel of shadow the shard had created.

“No…” Dain whispered, his breath ragged as he fell to his knees, clutching his chest. “I don’t want this.”

But the words felt hollow. The darkness was overwhelming, and his will to fight it was slipping away. The shard’s power was too strong, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t break free. His body convulsed as the transformation continued, his bones aching, his skin stretching and shifting as the darkness consumed him.

The shadows around him swirled violently, and the ground beneath him seemed to crack and split as the power of the shard fully claimed him. Dain’s eyes glowed with an eerie, unnatural light as the transformation took hold, and he felt the last remnants of his humanity slip away.

The shard had won.

-: Dain succumbs to the shard’s influence, and his body begins transforming into a vessel of shadow.
