Luna Aurora

Chapter 397

Ch. 397 / 450 May 05, 2026

Elyra stood at the edge of the Rift, her heart pounding in her chest. The air was thick with unnatural energy, the sky above swirling with dark clouds that seemed to pulse in time with the frantic beating of her heart. The Rift stretched out before her, a vast expanse of shadow and distortion, as though the very fabric of reality had been torn apart. This place—this wound in the world—was where everything had gone wrong, where everything was ending.

“I’ll lead the way,” Elyra said, her voice steady despite the storm raging inside her. She could feel the weight of the Lunar Heart against her chest, its power thrumming beneath her skin. But it was no longer the beacon of hope it once was. She could feel it weakening, pulling at her in a way it never had before. She had no choice but to press on.

Selene and Cassian flanked her as they moved toward the Rift’s heart, their faces grim. Behind them, the remnants of their forces followed, all of them silent, their expressions haunted by the destruction they had witnessed.

“This place isn’t natural,” Cassian muttered, his eyes darting nervously as he scanned the shifting shadows around them. “It’s feeding off his power. Dain’s power.”

Elyra nodded but didn’t answer. She could feel it too—how the land seemed to pulse with dark energy, how the shadows shifted and writhed in the air like living things, waiting for any moment of weakness to pounce. She could sense Dain, too. His presence, faint but growing, lurked somewhere deep inside the Rift, like a shadow calling her name. She couldn’t stop now, not when they were so close.

The wind howled around them, carrying with it the scent of decay and rot. As they stepped into the Rift, the world around them seemed to shift unnaturally, as though time itself was bending. The ground beneath their feet felt unstable, and every movement they made felt like it was taking them further from reality and deeper into some twisted nightmare.

“This place… it doesn’t make sense,” Selene said, her voice barely audible over the wind. “The Rift is warping time and space. We could get lost in here, Elyra. We have no idea what we’re walking into.”

Elyra’s heart clenched at the warning, but she refused to back down. “We don’t have a choice. Dain’s inside. I can feel him.”

Selene didn’t argue, though her worry was evident in the tightness of her expression. They pressed forward, the Rift growing more unstable with each step. The air felt charged, like the calm before a storm, and Elyra could sense the danger closing in on them.

As they moved deeper, the first of the shadow creatures appeared—a massive, hulking beast with eyes that burned with an otherworldly fire. Its body was made of twisted, dark energy, and it roared, shaking the ground beneath their feet.

“Stay close,” Elyra commanded, pulling the Lunar Heart from her chest. It began to glow softly, its light cutting through the darkness. She raised it high, the energy pushing against the storm’s pull. For a moment, the beast hesitated, as though the light repelled it, but then it charged.

Cassian reacted first, his blades flashing as he met the creature head-on. Elyra turned, her focus on the heart, channeling its power into a barrier to shield them from the creature’s fury. The storm howled around them, pushing against her, but Elyra gritted her teeth and held her ground. With a final thrust of her power, the beast collapsed, its form disintegrating into nothingness.

“Keep moving,” Elyra urged, though she felt her strength waning. The Rift was draining her, the constant pull of shadow and distortion sapping the energy from the Lunar Heart.

The deeper they went, the more twisted and powerful the creatures became—each one more dangerous than the last. They were no longer just beasts; they were shadows of people, of memories, of fears. Some of the creatures took on familiar forms, twisted reflections of those they had lost. Elyra’s heart ached every time she saw a familiar face, distorted and corrupted by the shadows. Friends. Family. And most painfully—Dain.

“Focus,” Selene said sharply, her voice cutting through Elyra’s thoughts. “These creatures are illusions. They’re feeding on our doubts, our fears. Don’t let them get to you.”

But Elyra could feel the pull. The Rift was a place of darkness, and it knew her better than anyone. It knew her weaknesses. And it was using them against her.

Suddenly, the ground beneath their feet cracked, and the world around them began to warp even more violently. Time itself seemed to break apart as the Rift pulled them deeper into its grasp. Elyra’s vision blurred, and she stumbled, her mind flooded with impossible images.

She saw herself and Dain—just children again, before the shadows had taken him away. She could feel the warmth of his hand in hers as they ran through the fields together, laughing, carefree. She could smell their mother’s cooking, feel the safety of home, before the war, before everything fell apart.

“No,” Elyra whispered, shaking her head as tears welled in her eyes. “This isn’t real. This isn’t what happened.”

But the Rift didn’t stop. It showed her more—what could have been, what might have been, if they had never been separated. A life without the shadows, without the destruction. Without the pain.

The illusions were too strong, the memories too real. Elyra could feel her grip on reality slipping, could feel the heartbreak of all the years she had lost. And yet, beneath it all, a flicker of light remained. The Lunar Heart.

With a trembling hand, Elyra reached out, holding the Lunar Heart high, the light pushing back against the darkness. The storm seemed to howl louder, the illusions more intense. But Elyra’s voice was firm as she spoke through the pain.

“I will find you, Dain,” she whispered. “No matter what the Rift shows me, I will bring you back.”

-: The Rift creates illusions of Dain and Elyra’s childhood, showing Elyra visions of what could have been if they had never been separated.
