Chapter 368

Ch. 368 / 450 May 05, 2026

The camp buzzed with tension, every wolf preparing for what they feared was the inevitable. Elyra had gathered her council in her tent, her eyes scanning the map spread across the table. Silver Vale’s defenses had held thus far, but Dain’s growing power loomed like a storm on the horizon.

“This is where we’ll station the scouts,” Elyra said, pointing to a narrow path leading into the stronghold. “If Dain’s forces try to advance, we’ll have enough warning to respond.”

Cassian stood beside her, arms crossed. “You’re assuming we’ll have time to respond. His raiding parties move faster than any of us anticipated.”

“We don’t have a choice,” Elyra replied, her tone firm. “If we wait for him to strike again, we’ll lose more than just territory—we’ll lose our chance to stop him altogether.”

Selene, seated in the corner, chimed in. “The shard’s influence is spreading. The longer we delay, the more his power solidifies. We need to act soon, or there won’t be a battle to win.”

As Elyra leaned over the map again, her heart ached with uncertainty. Every decision she made felt like balancing on a knife’s edge, and the lives of countless wolves depended on her choices.

The tension in the room shifted suddenly. She could feel it in the air—something unspoken, a shadow of doubt creeping into the space.

“Elyra,” a voice cut through the murmur of conversation. She looked up to see Marcus, one of her trusted advisors, stepping forward. His expression was unreadable, but there was a hardness in his eyes that hadn’t been there before.

“Yes, Marcus?” she asked, sensing the change in him.

Marcus hesitated for a fraction of a second before speaking, his voice cold and resolute. “You’re too weak to do what needs to be done.”

The room fell silent. Cassian tensed, his hand instinctively moving toward the hilt of his blade.

“What are you saying?” Elyra asked, her voice steady despite the turmoil brewing inside her.

“I’m saying you’re not fit to lead us,” Marcus said, his tone dripping with disdain. “You hesitate, you waver, and you let your emotions cloud your judgment. While you cling to some foolish hope of saving your brother, the rest of us are left to suffer the consequences of your indecision.”

Elyra felt the sting of his words but refused to let them show. “I’ve done everything in my power to protect this pack and the others. If you have a better plan, Marcus, I’m listening.”

Marcus scoffed. “You can’t even see the truth, can you? Dain is stronger than you’ll ever be. He has the shard’s power, and he’s not afraid to use it. While you cling to some fantasy of redemption, he’s out there building an army that will crush us all.”

Cassian stepped forward, his voice a growl. “Watch your tongue, Marcus. You’re speaking to your Luna.”

Marcus turned to Cassian, his lip curling in a sneer. “She stopped being my Luna the moment she put her love for her brother above the safety of the packs.”

Elyra felt a wave of anger surge through her, but she kept her composure. “If that’s how you feel, then you’re free to leave. I won’t force loyalty from anyone.”

Marcus laughed bitterly. “Leave? You don’t get it, do you? It’s too late for that.”

Before anyone could react, Marcus stepped back, his movements deliberate. “Dain already knows your plans,” he said, his voice like a dagger. “He knows everything—your defenses, your strategy, even your precious ritual. And do you know why? Because I told him.”

The room erupted in chaos. Cassian lunged for Marcus, but the traitor was quicker, slipping out of the tent before anyone could catch him.

“Guards!” Cassian roared, his voice echoing through the camp.

Elyra stood frozen for a moment, Marcus’s words sinking in like poison. He had betrayed them—betrayed her. She had trusted him, confided in him, and now her brother held the upper hand because of it.

“Elyra!” Cassian’s voice snapped her out of her thoughts.

She turned to him, her resolve hardening. “We can’t let him escape. If he reaches Dain, we lose what little advantage we have left.”

Cassian nodded, already moving toward the exit. “I’ll lead a team to track him down.”

“No,” Elyra said, stopping him. “We need every wolf here to prepare for what’s coming. If Dain knows our plans, he won’t wait to attack.”

Selene stepped forward, her expression grim. “She’s right. Marcus’s betrayal means Dain is likely already on the move. We need to focus on fortifying our defenses.”

Elyra took a deep breath, pushing aside the pain of Marcus’s betrayal. She couldn’t afford to dwell on it—not now. “Then we prepare for war. Cassian, double the guards at every entrance. Selene, I need you to start the preparations for the ritual. If Dain attacks, we need to be ready.”

As the council dispersed to carry out her orders, Elyra turned back to the map. Her hands trembled as she traced the path Dain’s forces would likely take. She couldn’t let her emotions cloud her judgment, not now.

A sharp wind blew through the tent, carrying with it the faint scent of ash and shadow. Elyra’s stomach turned as she realized what it meant.

Moments later, a scout burst into the tent, panting and wide-eyed. “Luna,” he said, his voice shaking. “Marcus… he left a message.”

Elyra braced herself. “What did he say?”

The scout hesitated, his eyes filled with fear. “Dain is coming. He plans to attack the stronghold. He’ll be here by sunrise.”

The words hit Elyra like a blow. Her heart pounded as she met the scout’s gaze.

“Then we’ll be ready,” she said, her voice steady despite the storm raging inside her.

As the scout left, Elyra stared at the map once more, her mind racing. Marcus’s betrayal had dealt a devastating blow, but she wouldn’t let it break her. She couldn’t.

Her brother was coming, and with him, the full force of the shadow. And this time, there would be no turning back.
