Louisa's POV
"Lucian," I said, "I don't want anyone to get married to my mate, but please don't kill anyone because of that..."
"You're not answering my question, Miss Louisa," Lucian said.
I felt annoyed and said, "I'm not answering you because this isn't an interrogation."
"Do you want me to change it to an interrogation?" Lucian raised an eyebrow and asked.
He looked absent-minded, but I couldn't tell if he was joking or not.
He would do everything for Lucas. That's for sure. If he felt it was necessary, he would not hesitate to pour boiling wolfsbane oil all over my body and watch me burn right in front of his eyes.
Well, that's a very unpleasant, yet terribly erotic scene. I thought to myself.
Will sensed the tension in the room and snarled at Lucian again.
He had already finished two and a half jars of blood and I could tell he was ready to fight at any time.
I held him up in my arms and said, "I overheard your conversation with Lucas. You were talking with Alpha Titan yesterday. You were talking about selling me to Alpha Titan and..."
Lucian interrupted me and said, "Miss Louisa, first of all, let me reassure you, you won't be sold to anyone. You will stay with Lucas and that's his final decision. Second, if you want to stay with us, you really shouldn't eavesdrop on any of our conversations ever again. We do everything on a need-to-know basis, so what you don't know is actually very important for your survival in our tribe."
His voice wasn't totally threatening. It was more like a fair warning.
I could tell that he didn't like this kind of conversation with me at all. He looked more relaxed when he was in the contour shop.
"So Lucas lied to Alpha Titan?" I frowned.
"In our world, there are only fulfilled promises and unfulfilled promises. There are no lies." Lucian shrugged and said.
I looked at him in disbelief and said, "But you've just promised that I won't be sold to anyone. Will that be an unfulfilled promise as well?"
Lucian shook his head and said, "Miss Louisa, no one can predict the future. If I tell you that he'll stay with you forever, that will be a lie, because things change. However, as long as you walk the line, stay away from troubles and keep Lucas happy, our term stays valid. You aren't an average breeder or girlfriend of his, Miss Louisa. You're his mate, one and only, and he's crazy about you right now. That's why he asked me to take you for a tour of the city and show you around. He has never asked me to do anything like this for any of his girlfriends before. So, please, have some faith in yourself. Have some faith in him. He's not entirely a terrible person, you'll see that."
Will smacked his mouth and said, "See, I've told you so. Werewolves are very unstable creatures. Everything about them is a lie, a lie, and another lie."
"So you can't tell me anything about Akela?" I frowned and asked.
"All you have to know is that she's nothing to him," Lucian said. Then, he pulled my seat towards him, so he could get closer to me.
"You know what we do for a living, right?" he asked.
"You kill people, burn down their villages and kidnap their women," I said.
Will jumped onto Lucian's shoulder and burped.
Lucian picked him up and put him into his pocket, stroking his head with his slender fingers.
Will looked very comfortable and satisfied. He pressed his face against Lucian's chest and started to doze off.
Well, that's a very drastic change of attitude. I thought to myself.
"We are destroying the old world and building a new one by changing old tribe sites into modernized cities like Skagen. We are doing very well in the North and we're moving to the South. You see, this Kingdom has always been divided."
Lucian used his finger to dip into the blood and drew a line on the table.
He tapped his finger at the area above the blood line and said, "The North is always considered to be a deserted, forsaken area, where civilization gives in to the wilderness. It's a place where time stagnates, where evil and barbarism prevail, where the tribesmen and rogues struggle in the mud and severe poverty, where the criminals and exiles chew each other alive like pests."
He then moved his finger to the other side of the blood line and continued, "The South, in contrast, is the place where the old money thrives. Kings, prophets, and scholars establish iron principles and rules as the foundation of our society. All these years, they have accumulated tremendous wealth and knowledge to make the world a better place, but they only splurge on luxuries and vanity to sustain their stale, decayed, and lavish lifestyles."
Lucian then moved a knife across the blood line from the North to the South and said, "But now, the world we're living in is evolving. It is advancing, with Luke being the dynamic force of momentum. He is invincible on battlefields, a force of nature. You should see him fighting. There's no word to describe such a mighty man of valor. But the thing is, winning a war doesn't mean he's winning the world, especially in the old South. People in the South are descendants of Lycans, whereas Lucas was basically a lad who came from the middle of nowhere. People in the South don't have any respect for him and they will eat him alive. That's why I have to help him to tie up some loose ends for him in a more diplomatic way."
I looked at the long, thin blood smear dragged by the knife on the table. It had already started to clot and turn tarnished.
"So what you're saying is, there will be a wedding between Lucas and Akela for diplomatic reasons, but they will not get married... and I won't be sold to Alpha Dire, because Lucas has made an unfulfilled promise to him... Also for some diplomatic reasons." I whispered.
"I didn't say anything like that, Miss Louisa. But you're a quick learner." Lucian looked at me with admiration and handed his blood-dripping finger to Will.
There was a slight tic on Will's nose. Then, he grabbed Lucian's finger with both arms and started to lick it with gusto in his dream.
"I guess we're ready to order now," Lucian pushed the menu in front of me and said. "What would you like to eat?"
