Lily
Less than five minutes ago, three werewolf men dressed in navy-colored suits entered Wesley’s office without so much as a greeting to me. Now I can hear one of them, probably Wesley’s Beta, shouting without any restraint.
“I can’t believe you’re protecting a rogue after what happened to my sister!” he yells. “How could you do this to me? Don’t you remember what happened the last time you trusted a fucking rogue?!”
I stop breathing and stare at the closed door with a heavy feeling in my heart. I know the conversation taking place is private between Wesley and his pack members, but it’s not like I can ignore their discussion.
“Stop yelling at me and sit down, Freddy.” Wesley says in his Alpha voice. He is calm, but his tone demands respect, and even though Wesley isn’t my Alpha, goosebumps prickle over my skin—he is strong. Very strong.
I swallow thickly and hear Freddy pull a chair from the wall and drag it closer to Wesley’s desk. He sits down on it and begins speaking again, in a lower tone this time.
“Mirelle was the Luan pack’s Luna and your mate. She was a lovely and kind person, and you promised me and your pack that you would never trust another rogue after what happened to her. Or did you forget about that part?”
So Freddy is Mirelle’s brother. How interesting. Maybe I can finally figure out what happened to Wesley’s mate. It would be a good thing since I still don’t understand why Wesley is so mean and disrespectful to me for being a rogue.
Unable to fight my curiosity, I get up from my seat and inch closer to the door, stopping in my tracks when I hear Wesley’s rumbling voice again.
“I remember every word I said, Freddy.”
Freddy hisses. “Then why did you hire that rogue as your new secretary? Explain that to me!”
“As the Alpha of this pack, I don’t need your permission, Freddy. Neither do I need to explain anything to you. I was going to, but not after your unnecessary tantrum.”
Freddy growls in frustration and storms out of Wesley’s office without another word, slamming the door into the wall before I can scurry away. I yelp in surprise and freeze, not knowing what to do when his blue eyes land on mine. He is blonde with glasses and a stocky build, and his expression twists into one of pure rage upon seeing me.
“What do you think you’re doing this close to the door?” he growls, grabbing my arm roughly. “Were you listening in on our conversation?”
“I- I was just sorting the bookshelf,” I stutter, trying to pull away from his grip.
“You filthy rogue,” he sneers. “You don’t belong here. You never did, and you never will!”
I close my eyes when he raises his hand to slap me, but the hit never comes. Instead, I feel a gust of wind, and when I open my eyes again, I feel Wesley’s chest behind me like a living wall of muscles. His arm is bent over my head, fingers clutched around Freddy’s wrist in a tight grip.
“Don’t touch her,” his voice is a cold warning.
Freddy’s eyes widen in surprise, but he quickly recovers and pulls his wrist from Wesley’s hold. “What are you doing? This rogue was listening in on our—”
“I know what she was doing,” Wesley cuts him off. “And I don’t appreciate you manhandling my secretary. Lily is under my protection, and if you ever lay a hand on her again, I will make sure you regret it.”
Freddy bares his teeth at Wesley. “And what about Mirelle?” he hisses. “Don’t you remember what happened to her? And yet here you are, protecting a rogue. This is a disgrace to our pack, to her memory.”
“Enough,” Wesley growls. “If you keep this up, I won’t hesitate to kick you out of the pack.”
“You would pick the rogue over your own Beta?!” Freddy bares his teeth at his Alpha, and his whole face has transformed into a werewolf-like muzzle.
I swallow thickly and take a step back, only to lean against Wesley’s chest. For a moment, I’m afraid he is going to push me away, but he surprises me by placing a hand on my shoulder and gently gripping it.
“Lily is pregnant with my child, which means she is under my protection until she has given birth. If you hurt her or even look at her in the wrong way, I wouldn’t hesitate to rip you and everyone involved into shreds. Is that clear?”
Freddy’s face pales. “P-pregnant?” he stares down at my stomach and looks even more afraid. “S-she is carrying your legacy?”
“Yes, which means you’ve committed a serious crime by threatening her. I could have you executed for that, you know. But since you’re an old friend of mine, I will let this incident slide. Do not ever think to test my mercy again, Freddy. Next time, I might not always be in such a friendly mood, and we both know I’m not afraid of getting blood on my paws.” I can hear the evil smile in Wesley’s voice. It’s cold and cruel, and I repress a shudder. Even Freddy and the other two wolves look horror-struck by Wesley’s words.
Freddy looks away and takes a step back, lowering his head in submission. “I apologize for my behavior, Alpha,” he mumbles, not meeting Wesley’s gaze. “It won’t happen again.”
Wesley hums in interest and releases my shoulder, his intense gaze fixed on Freddy until the werewolf looks away. He then turns to the other two men in the room. “This is an internal issue between me and Freddy. No one is to speak of it outside of this room. Do I make myself clear?”
The two werewolves nod their heads in agreement, and Wesley turns back to Freddy, who is now standing with his head bowed low.
“I hope you understand that the only reason I spared your life is because you’re Mirelle’s brother. Had it been anyone else, they wouldn’t have lived. But since you’re you, no one will know you threatened the mother of my child and survived. But I suggest you leave my office before I change my mind about that and decide to make an example out of you.”
Freddy isn’t going to argue with that. There is a wet patch between his legs, and his expression is fearful. Wesley used his Alpha voice on him, but somehow, I don’t think that’s the only reason Freddy peed in his pants. My suspicion is that Wesley has executed pack members for far lesser crimes.
Wesley watches Freddy leave, but before the door closes behind him, he turns back to me. His green eyes are intense, and I instinctively take a step back, suddenly awfully aware of the difference in power between us. It just never hit me until now that I’m dealing with an Alpha. Someone who could easily kill me if he wanted to. Not that he would. I’m safe while carrying his child...right?
