Lily
“Are you okay?” Wesley asks, but when I look up at him, his face isn’t gentle and not very caring either. He truly lives up to the office rumor of his heart being made out of ice.
I nod, not trusting myself to speak. Wesley studies me for a long moment before walking over to his desk and taking a seat. I’m unsure whether to leave or stay, still feeling shaken from what I just witnessed. But before I can even think of leaving, Wesley speaks.
“You shouldn’t be eavesdropping on conversations you’re not part of,” he says sternly, his gaze piercing into mine.
“I know. I’m sorry,” I say, keeping my eyes downcast.
He leans forward, his elbows on the desk. “But you don’t have to worry about Freddy. He won’t bother you again.”
“I’m not worried about him,” I say, looking up at him. Not a hair is out of place, and he looks so composed and calm that it’s almost scary. It makes me whisper my following sentence. “I’m more worried about you.”
This seems to surprise him because he arches a half-interested eyebrow. “Me? Why would you be worried about me?”
“I just saw you threaten to kill someone, and it scared me,” I admit, my voice barely above a whisper.
“Hmm...”
Wesley lounges in his throne-like chair, and a chill runs down my spine when his lips form a faint smile. Not a single word is spoken, but at that moment, his silence is scarier than words because it confirms what I already know: Wesley is a force to be reckoned with, and he wouldn’t hesitate to rip anyone who opposed him into shreds. Probably me included.
“Fascinating. You knew I was a cruel Alpha, yet you were never afraid of me before,” his voice sounds amused, and he looks incredibly self-satisfied. “What changed?”
I frown. “Didn’t you hear a word that I just said?”
“Ah, there she is,” he grins in his seat. “I was wondering where Lily went.”
I notice there is an almost playful spark in Wesley’s eyes, and the change in his expression baffles me. “Your mood changes definitely aren’t normal...” I mutter.
Wesley chuckles. “Is that right?”
Is that a challenge in his tone? Nevertheless, I shock myself by daring to smirk. “Is the Alpha sure he isn’t a woman? It can get rather tough to control your mood when you’re on your period. Need a tampon?”
Wesley leans his cheek against his hand. His smile is gone, and his eyes are cold once more. It makes me worry I might have stepped over the line. “You know, it’s not usually smart to antagonize someone who could easily rip you to shreds and end your life, Miss Lopez.”
Oh no, he used my surname!
Fear grips my throat, but then I see Wesley’s lips twitch, I blink in surprise. It’s barely noticeable, yet there is no mistaking his amusement—the asshole is playing with me. And what the hell? How did he know about the “ripping to shreds” part? That’s exactly what I was thinking earlier!
“Miss Lopes?”
I freeze. “Y-yes?”
Wesley smiles. “Are you aware that you voice your thoughts out loud whenever you get nervous?”
My face heats up. “Shit...”
Wesley’s lips twitch again, but he doesn’t laugh, and neither does he smile. “A car will pick us up in an hour,” he says and pauses, looking me up and down. “Until then, I expect you to continue working. And oh,” his face turns serious. “Don’t ever speak to me like that again, Lily. While I may enjoy teasing you, there are lines you should never cross. Understood?”
Oh, so it’s a “I can do that, but you definitely can’t” kind of relationship that he wants? Great.
I nod, feeling guilty for having overstepped my

boundaries. But at the same time, I’m also a bit angry at Wesley for messing with me. I know I shouldn’t let my emotions get the best of me, especially around an Alpha, but he isn’t innocent either!
“Excellent,” Wesley stands up and buttons his suit jacket before looking me over. “It’s actually good that you’re here. You and I have a meeting to attend on the highest floor. Follow me to the elevator.”
I reluctantly follow Wesley down the corridor and into the elevator. It’s filled with people who all turn silent upon the CEO entering—it’s like time itself stops. His presence is so powerful that even breathing feels impossible. Wesley, however, doesn’t seem to mind. He presses the button leading to the highest floor, and the elevator starts moving.
The doors open on every floor, and more and more people enter the cramped until I’m struggling to keep myself from behind pushed against the wall. No one seems to care about me, and I shriek when a large woman’s bag slams into my chest.
What the heck?!
I glare at the woman, but she doesn’t even notice. She is speaking loudly into her phone, oblivious to Wesley’s presence, as she keeps laughing with her friend. And while she does that, she rubs her ass and bag against me until I’m pressed against the wall with little room to spare.
Wesley notices and stifles a laugh. “Need help?”
His deep voice makes the woman turn silent and pay attention to her surroundings. She immediately turns around, gasping when she sees me fighting her bag. “I’m so terribly sorry! I didn’t see you back there. You’re very small, and I didn’t know it was a ‘bring your child to work day’ today!”
Child? She thinks that I’m a child?! As if this wasn’t humiliating enough...
Wesley coughs to hide his laughter, but he is miserably failing to conceal his amusement, and I can see his smile behind the knuckle that is pressed to his lips. “It’s quite alright, ma’am. Miss Lopez is actually my new secretary and assistant. We are on our way to a meeting on the highest floor, and we wouldn’t want to be late.”
The woman gasps again, her face turning pale. “Your assistant?! Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry! I didn’t know who you were. Please forgive me.”
Wesley dismissively waves a hand. “It’s fine. Just watch where you’re swinging that thing, would you?”
The woman nods frantically and keeps her bag close to her chest while Wesley’s large hand falls on top of my shoulder. I’m surprised at his touch and blush when he pulls me into his chest so that my cheek is leaning against him.
“Better?”
“Umm...” What am I supposed to say? This is strange, but...I don’t hate it.
I can feel his chest vibrate with a chuckle. “Relax, Lily. I’m not trying to seduce you,” he whispers into my ear in a mischievous tone. “I just wouldn’t want my new secretary to be assaulted by another bag.”
My face turns even redder at his words, and I push away from him, feeling a mix of emotions. Part of me is glad that he clarified his intentions, while another part is disappointed. I don’t even know why I feel that way. It’s not like I have any interest in Wesley...right?
The elevator finally reaches our floor, and everyone hurries out, relieved to escape the confined space. Wesley walks ahead of me, and I can’t help but stare at his broad shoulders and muscular back.
Wesley must be the most attractive man that I’ve ever seen...he might be an asshole, but he looks like he stepped out of GQ magazine.
Wait.
What the hell am I thinking?
I shake my head, trying to clear my thoughts. What in the everloving heck is wrong with me? I’m here to work, not to ogle my boss, and definitely not Wesley! He had his chance and rejected me—the ship has sailed.
As we make our way down the hall, Wesley glances back at me. “Are you coming, Lily?”
I snap out of my daze and quickly catch up to him. “Yes, sorry.”
Wesley nods, his eyes flickering with amusement once again. “You seem to get lost in thought quite easily.”
I grimace. “Yeah, I know. It’s a bad habit of mine.”
Wesley shrugs. “It’s not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes a little daydreaming can be good for the soul.”
Gasping, I stop in my tracks. “Were you just...no...that can’t be right...”
Wesley turns to look down at me, his eyebrows raised in question. “What can’t be right?”
“Were you just being kind to me?”
He masks a smile by looking away. I’m certain of it...or maybe I’m seeing things? It’s probably the latter, considering the cold tone he uses a second later. “Don’t be ridiculous, Miss Lopez,” he says, back to his asshole self once more. “I’m merely stating my opinion. Now let’s go. We don’t want to be late for the meeting.”
