I Wanna Ruin Our Friendship

A Chance for the Truth

Ch. 132 / 162 Apr 09, 2026

For the first time in weeks, things at school felt... normal. Or at least, as close to normal as my life could get.

Logan and I were rebuilding something fragile but real. He’d started walking me to class again, his hand brushing mine as we joked about old times. The shadows of what we’d been through still lingered, but for the first time, I felt like we were stepping into the light.

Even Jake seemed lighter these days. We still met in the library a few times a week, though our study sessions had taken on a more relaxed tone. It was easy to be around him—comforting in a way I hadn’t expected.

But there was something that kept gnawing at me, a weight I couldn’t shake no matter how good things felt.

The truth about Vanessa.

One afternoon, as Jake and I sat across from each other in the library, I decided I couldn’t keep it in any longer.

“Jake,” I said, closing my textbook and looking at him seriously.

He glanced up, raising an eyebrow. “What’s up?”

I hesitated, my heart pounding. “I need to tell you something. And it’s... big.”

He leaned back in his chair, his expression shifting to one of concern. “Okay. I’m listening.”

Taking a deep breath, I told him everything. About Vanessa’s lies, the paternity test, the truth about Professor Mitchell. I didn’t leave anything out, not even the part where Alyssa had found the test in Vanessa’s bag.

When I finished, Jake stared at me, his face pale.

“She lied to Logan,” I said, my voice trembling. “She lied to all of us. And I hate what she’s done, but... I don’t think she deserves to keep living like this. Hiding behind lies and running from the truth.”

Jake ran a hand through his hair, letting out a low whistle. “Wow,” he said finally. “I mean, I knew Vanessa had her secrets, but this...” He shook his head.

“I don’t want to ruin her,” I said quickly. “But lying to the person I love—letting him carry this burden—it’s not an option. And I think...” I hesitated, choosing my words carefully. “I think Vanessa deserves better than this, too. She’s innocent, Jake. Professor Mitchell—he’s the one who should face the consequences, not her.”

Jake looked at me for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Finally, he nodded.

“You’re right,” he said. “This story isn’t over. Vanessa’s been carrying this alone for too long, and it’s time someone helped her. If she’s not going to stand up for herself, then we’ll do it with her.”

Relief flooded through me, and I reached out to squeeze his hand. “Thank you,” I said softly. “I couldn’t do this without you.”

“You’re not alone in this, Emma,” Jake said firmly. “And neither is she.”
