I never thought I’d find myself spending so much time with Jake. At first, it felt wrong—unnatural, even. He was Vanessa’s stepbrother, after all. And after everything she’d done to me, the idea of letting someone so close to her into my life seemed like a mistake waiting to happen.
But Jake wasn’t anything like Vanessa. He wasn’t loud or attention-seeking, and he didn’t manipulate people to get his way. He was kind, confident in a quiet way, and most importantly, he didn’t try to force his way into my life. He just… showed up.
The library became our unofficial meeting spot, a place where we spent hours poring over textbooks and swapping notes as we prepared for exams. It started out as purely practical—two students studying for their futures—but somewhere along the way, it shifted.
Jake wasn’t just a study partner anymore. He was my friend.
I’d never had a friendship like this before. With Jake, there were no pretenses, no unspoken expectations. It was just… easy.
He mentioned one day, almost offhandedly, that he was planning to go to medical school too. The news surprised me, but it also made me feel a sense of connection. We had the same goals, the same drive to make a difference.
“Why medicine?” I’d asked him one afternoon as we sat across from each other, the table between us cluttered with open books and half-empty coffee cups.
“My mom was a nurse,” he said, smiling softly. “She passed away a few years ago, but she loved what she did. She made people feel safe, you know? I guess I want to do that too.”
His answer stayed with me. It was genuine, unpolished—so different from the manufactured charm Vanessa used to get what she wanted.
The more time we spent together, the more I realized how different Jake was. He wasn’t just someone I studied with; he was someone I could rely on.
One night, after hours in the library, I felt the weight of everything pressing down on me. It was nearly 10 PM, and the exhaustion from weeks of emotional turmoil and sleepless nights was catching up to me.
“Jake,” I said, setting my pen down and leaning back in my chair.
He looked up from his notes, his eyes warm and attentive. “Yeah?”
“There’s something I need to tell you.”
He tilted his head, curiosity flickering across his face. “Okay. I’m listening.”
I hesitated, the words caught in my throat. I wasn’t sure why I felt the need to tell him everything, but it was like the dam holding back all my emotions had cracked, and I couldn’t stop it from breaking completely.
I took a deep breath and started talking.
I told him about Logan—how he’d been my best friend, my first love, and how everything between us had fallen apart. I told him about Caleb, about the mistakes I’d made and the guilt I carried. And I told him about Vanessa—the lies, the manipulation, the way she’d turned my life into a nightmare.
I didn’t tell him everything. I couldn’t. The truth about Vanessa’s baby being Professor Mitchell’s wasn’t something I was ready to share—not yet. But I told him enough.
By the time I finished, my hands were trembling, and my throat felt raw.
Jake didn’t say anything at first. He just looked at me, his expression unreadable. For a moment, I thought I’d made a mistake, that I’d said too much.
But then he spoke.
“Emma,” he said softly, his voice steady. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry you went through all of that.”
His words weren’t filled with pity or condescension. They were honest, raw. And when I looked into his eyes, I saw something I hadn’t expected: he felt my pain.
“You didn’t deserve any of that,” he said, leaning forward slightly. “And you sure as hell didn’t deserve what Vanessa put you through.”
I swallowed hard, blinking back tears. “I didn’t tell you this to make you feel bad, Jake. I just… I needed someone to know.”
He nodded, his gaze unwavering. “I get it. And I’m glad you told me.”
He hesitated, glancing down at the table for a moment before looking back at me.
“Look, Em,” he said slowly, his voice lower now. “There’s something you need to know.”
I stiffened, my heart pounding. “What is it?”
Jake ran a hand through his hair, his jaw tightening as if he was trying to find the right words.
“It’s about Vanessa,” he said finally. “There’s more to her story than you realize. And I think it’s time you knew the truth.”
