POV Kali
Walking beside Zion through the palace corridors felt like moving through a dream and nightmare at the same time.
The hallways seemed to stretch forever, and I was painfully aware of every whisper following in our wake. Every servant, guard, and noble we passed stopped to stare at the impossible sight - the Lycan King personally escorting a married Luna to his private chambers.
The mate bond hummed between us with every step, that intoxicating scent of pine and winter storms surrounding me like a protective bubble. But my logical mind kept screaming about what I'd just done, what I'd just thrown away.
"Your Majesty." A tall, dark-haired man appeared beside us with military precision. I could tell from his bearing that he'd been summoned through mindlink.
"James," Zion acknowledged without slowing our pace.
"The situation in the ballroom is... volatile," his Beta said quietly. "Several Alphas are demanding immediate council sessions, and there are rumors of potential alliance disruptions."
"Let them demand," Zion replied coolly. "My priorities have shifted dramatically tonight."
Behind us, I could hear Kastian's voice getting more desperate with each step. "This is madness! Eight years of marriage cannot simply be dissolved because of some supposed mate bond!"
But we'd reached massive double doors guarded by two wolves who looked like they could tear apart armies. They stepped aside for their king while smoothly blocking Kastian and my father from following.
"Wait here," Zion commanded with absolute authority. "You'll be summoned when I'm ready to discuss terms."
"You cannot simply steal my wife!" Kastian shouted, his composure completely gone.
"I'm not stealing anyone," Zion said calmly. "I'm offering sanctuary to my fated mate."
The heavy doors closed with finality, cutting off Kastian's protests. Suddenly, I was alone with the most powerful werewolf in the kingdom.
The silence felt overwhelming after all the chaos. His chambers were beautiful but somehow comfortable - deep red curtains, a warm fireplace, and walls lined with more books than I'd ever seen in one place. It felt personal, like stepping into someone's private world rather than a royal showroom.
Zion moved to pour wine from a crystal bottle by the fireplace, but I could see the tension in his shoulders, the careful control he was maintaining. When he turned back to me, his silver eyes burned with an intensity that made my breath catch.
"I need you to know," he said, his voice rougher than before, "that everything in me is screaming to claim you right now. The mate bond... it's not gentle. It's demanding, overwhelming. I can barely think straight with you this close."
He set the wine aside and stepped closer, his scent wrapping around me like silk. "I've waited my whole life to find you, not even knowing you existed. And now that you're here..." His hands clenched at his sides. "Every instinct I have wants to make you mine completely, to never let you go."
My heart pounded as he moved even closer, close enough that I could feel the heat from his body.
"But I won't," he continued, his voice gentling. "Not until you want it too. Not until you choose me freely, without fear or pressure. Even though it's killing me to hold back."
The raw honesty in his voice, the way he was fighting his own desires to give me space, made something warm bloom in my chest.
"Are you afraid of me?" he asked softly.
The question surprised me. He was powerful enough to take anything he wanted, but he was asking. Waiting.
"No," I said, and realized it was true. "I'm terrified of everything else - what I've done, what it means - but not you."
Relief flickered across his features. "Good. Because I would never hurt you, Kali. What I feel for you... it's not just want, though the Moon Goddess knows I want you more than I've ever wanted anything. It's deeper than that."
He reached out slowly, giving me time to pull away, and brushed a strand of hair from my face. The simple touch sent goosebumps through my entire body.
"You're my other half," he whispered. "The missing piece. And I can feel how much you've been hurt. It makes me want to destroy everyone who made you feel that way."
His eyes flashed gold for a moment, his wolf surfacing briefly. "But more than that, it makes me want to spend the rest of my life showing you how wrong they were."
I stared up at him, overwhelmed by the passion in his voice, the way he looked at me like I was a miracle.
"I saw your memories," he continued, his thumb tracing my cheek. "I felt your pain, your loneliness. I know what they put you through. And I'm telling you now - you're not barren. Your body was protecting you, waiting for the right mate."
"How can you be so sure?" I whispered.
"Because I can sense your wolf responding to mine. She's been dormant, suppressed by years of being with the wrong man. But she's waking up now." His voice dropped to a growl. "I can smell it on you - your scent is changing, becoming richer. Your body knows what mine knows."
Before I could process his words fully, urgent knocking echoed through the chamber. James' voice came through clearly, tight with worry.
"Your Majesty, we have a situation. Alpha Kastian is threatening to call a formal challenge, and several allied packs are demanding immediate intervention. The entire political structure is in chaos."
The weight of what I'd done crashed over me. By choosing the mate bond, by choosing myself, I might have just started a war.
