Carrying the Lycan Cursed child

chapter 13

Ch. 13 / 30 Mar 26, 2026

POV Kali

Kastian's fury at my public rejection was terrible to witness. His carefully constructed political performance crumbled completely, revealing the possessive rage underneath that I'd never fully seen before. But what frightened me more was how the confrontation was affecting Zion—I could feel exhaustion pulling at him despite his attempts to hide it.

"Marriage contracts cannot be dissolved by one party's whim!" Kastian snarled, his diplomatic mask gone entirely. "She belongs to me by law, by the agreement between our families, by eight years of marriage bonds that supersede any temporary infatuation with royal power!"

The word "belongs" hit me like a physical blow, but this time I didn't cower. Something had changed in me during our bonding—not just confidence, but a bone-deep understanding of my own worth.

"I don't belong to anyone," I said clearly, my voice carrying across the hall. "I choose my own path, my own mate, my own future."

The nobles began citing legal precedents, their voices mixing with anxiety and excitement. Some supported Kastian, others defended the supremacy of mate bonds. The air grew thick with competing Alpha energies as tensions rose.

"The Silverwood dowry alone makes this theft an act of war," Kastian declared, and I could see his real motivation—not love, but greed and wounded pride. "The lands, trade agreements, political alliances—all contracted through our marriage. She cannot abandon her obligations because a king showed her attention."

Even now, he was reducing me to a business transaction. My wolf bristled with indignation, drawing strength from the mate bond despite sensing Zion's growing weakness.

Zion's response was swift and deadly. "Challenge my will if you dare, but do it as a warrior, not a merchant haggling over property."

The royal power that rolled off Zion made every wolf in the room automatically want to submit, but I noticed the slight tremor in his voice, the way he gripped the chair arm. Several nobles stepped back, their wolves recognizing threat despite sensing something amiss.

Inside, I wrestled with guilt. Had choosing love over duty brought this weakness upon him? Was my presence somehow draining the very person I was trying to protect?

Realizing he was outmatched physically and losing politically, Kastian made a strategic retreat. But his parting words chilled me.

"This isn't over," he said, his eyes promising retribution. "I will reclaim everything that belongs to me, by law or by force. You've made an enemy today that will cost you dearly."

As he stormed out with his delegation, my legs nearly gave out from relief mixed with exhaustion that seemed to mirror Zion's condition. The confrontation had drained us both in different ways.

Once the hall emptied, Zion turned to me, and I saw the effort it took him to straighten his shoulders and project strength.

"You chose me," he said, cupping my face gently. His touch sent warmth between us, but I noticed it was weaker than before. "In front of everyone, with everything at stake, you chose me."

"I will always choose you," I whispered back, though fear gnawed at me. Something was wrong with both of us, and I didn't understand what.

His expression grew serious. "There's something we need to discuss. The other women in my household have been here for years, hoping to bear my heir and become queen. Your arrival changes everything for them."

My stomach dropped. I'd almost forgotten about the harem in all the political chaos. A pack of unmated females competing for the same male—my wolf knew instinctively how dangerous that could be.

"Twelve women," Zion continued, leading me through corridors with careful steps. "All beautiful, accomplished, and deeply invested in their position here. They won't welcome you with open arms."

I could smell them before we reached the doors—perfume, female pheromones, and underneath it all, the sharp scent of territorial aggression. My wolf's hackles rose in response.

"What do I need to know?" I asked, trying to prepare myself while fighting my own fatigue.

"They have their own hierarchy, their own rules. Lady Vivienne has been here longest and considers herself their leader." He paused. "I want you to be careful around them. They're not just competitors—they can be dangerous when threatened."

We stopped before ornate double doors. Through them, I could hear female voices and smell the complex mix of twelve different wolves all living in close quarters.

"Will you stay with me?" I asked, suddenly nervous and not wanting to face this challenge in my weakened state.

"For a few minutes," he said, though I could see the cost of projecting strength. "But you'll need to establish yourself with them on your own. It's the only way they'll respect you."

The doors opened to reveal a luxurious common room. Twelve women looked up as we entered, and the assault on my senses was immediate—perfumes, territorial markers, and the sharp bite of hostile pheromones.

They were all stunning, and every one radiated the confidence of wolves who considered this their territory. My wolf pressed low in my chest, intimidated by their combined presence and my own uncertain condition.

"Ladies," Zion said formally, "I present Kali, my fated mate and future queen."

The silence that followed was deafening, but their scents spoke volumes—shock, rage, desperate denial, and underneath it all, fear of displacement.

Then Lady Vivienne rose gracefully. Tall and elegant with dark hair and emerald eyes, her scent carried the authority of a lead female. Her wolf's dominance pressed against mine, testing my strength.

"So this is the married failure who thinks she can walk in and claim what we've worked years to achieve," she said sweetly, but her scent was pure venom.

Zion's growl was immediate and threatening, his Alpha power filling the room despite his condition. "Watch your tongue or I'll rip it out."

Every woman immediately lowered their gaze in submission, their wolves recognizing the ultimate dominant male. But I could still feel their resentment, thick and choking in the air.

Zion lifted my hand to his lips, and the gentle kiss sent reassurance between us, though weaker than before. "I'll return soon," he murmured. "Remember what I said about establishing yourself."

The moment he left, the room's energy shifted dramatically. Without the king's presence, the women's wolves emerged more fully. I was suddenly surrounded by twelve predators who saw me as an intruder in their territory.

But instead of cowering as the old Kali would have, I straightened my shoulders. Whatever was happening to my body, whatever strength I was gaining or losing, I would not let these women see weakness.

"Well," Vivienne said, circling me slowly. "Look what the king dragged in. A discarded wife who couldn't even keep her own husband satisfied."

"I suppose you think being 'fated mates' makes you special," another woman laughed. "Do you have any idea how many women have claimed that bond with the king?"

This time, instead of shrinking, I lifted my chin. "And yet here I am, while you're all still waiting." My voice carried new authority I barely recognized. "Perhaps that should tell you something about the difference between genuine bonds and wishful thinking."

The silence that followed was different—surprised, wary. For the first time, I'd fought back, and they hadn't expected it.

I had survived Kastian's political assault and taken my first step toward establishing myself among these competitors. But as exhaustion pulled at me, I wondered what price Zion and I would both pay for the power flowing between us.
